I'm just about to start a Tyranid force to try and get back into playing 40K at some point in the near future. However the details of my paint scheme seem to be alluding me! Has anyone got any great colour schemes that would help inspire me so I'll actually make a choice?! This thread will also, eventually, show pics of the stuff I mange to finish up...... ;)
Cheers guys! :D

Mine are a tad boring... they were painted to blend in with a desert environment. They are not being used as Tyranids but indigenous alien creatures that live on a desert planet instead:

Inso, I really like the look of those. Nice job!
-
I think they look wicked man. I love the crab like carapace on the back of the carnifex. Sometimes the most simple of paint schemes can look the most striking! Since they're indigenous is that why you've shied away from any bio weapons?
I was thinking a tan base colour with blends of red to break up the skin. For the carapace I'm thinking a dark brown with lighter brown feathering but add a layer of gloss varnish to make it look really beetle like?
-
Inso;
If those paint jobs are boring, I would love to see what you call not boring. They are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

Hitman

Here are mine. Just a quick paint job so I could get them on the table.

Cheers for the comments :).
Deadspace1 - spot on (no bio-weapons because they wouldn't have evolved)
They are a boring scheme but easy to paint. Base coat of desert yellow all over. Wash with Ogryn Flesh all over, re-paint the armour with desert yellow leaving wash in the recesses, final highlight the armour with watered down bleached bone. Then paint the eyes/mouths... job done.
The biggest decision to make is whether you want to go with contrasting, bright colours of natural colours that compliment each other.
Some of my favourite 'proper' Tyranids were the black/yellow ones that Paul Sawyer did in White Dwarf... I can't find pics though :( .

@ Bahir
Nice work man, really cleanly painted. The only thing I find is that the large green areas are crying out for some patterning. I think I'm going to be adding a load of little spots on the flesh where it meets the carapace. Hopefully it will not only add some visual interest but also help hide some of my over zealous painting mistakes! ;D
@ Inso
Starship Troopers all the way! I just don't think I'm brave enough to do that kind of camo pattern!

Tyranids were my first foray into gaming, way back when. 'Hive Fleet Atropos.' The name of one of the three fates of Greek mythology - the one that cut the threads of men's lives; and the species name of the Death's-Head Hawkmoth, Acherontia atropos. (That one from The Silence of the Lambs (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/86/The_Silence_of_the_Lambs_poster.jpg/220px-The_Silence_of_the_Lambs_poster.jpg), remember?)
Anyway, I tried to adapt some of the colours of the moth (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_LHGrG4uT6KQ/TQjmvQmh4QI/AAAAAAAADFY/oB7jErjWkio/s1600/Acherontia+atropos.jpg): blues with yellow spots. Didn't get too far. Eventually I wised up and decided on something simple - Inso and Bahir have good examples of how great that looks. ;) But I still have one pic hovering about the internets, here (http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleetVenom/album66/Harbinger2.jpg.html).

I like this colour scheme, it looks great for desert living species. One day I will have to paint all the Tyranids I have (probably 80+ stealers).

@ Vermis
That's some well thought out fluff man! I haven't even begun to think of a name but I realise its going to have to be something cool. Not just a random word.
Love the colour scheme man. I whole army painted like that would look awesome!
-
Right, here's what I've come up with...
They were all pretty quick and easy to paint up (around 8 hours i reckon).
This is probably a pace I could keep up with for the entire effort and I'm pretty happy with the results if I'm honest.
What do you guys think?
-
I think they are stunning :o I think it would take me 8hours to paint one mini to that standard... Or as close as I could get to that standard.
Can we have a close up of a single and a run down on the colours and how you did them please?
I have a mid army sitting in a box as I lost interest after a few minis..
-
Thanks man! I really appreciate that. I wasn't really sure how these would turn out when I started but I'm pretty happy. :D
I've actually got a slight run down of how I painted themon my blog but if enough people are interested I could put together a proper tutorial as I paint up my Termagaunts?
As far as close ups go ill get some up tmoz as the GF is using the computer at the minute and lo betide any man who interrupts her when she's catching up on her stories! ;D
-
Nice work and quick! That is seriously good going.
-
Lovely paint on those and a nice blend of natural colours with a slight contrast :-*
-
Thanks guys. Considering I'm the most glacially slow painter in the world it was quite a surprise to get these done in a couple of sessions. I suppose it means I worked the colour scheme out just right. Natural was exactly what I was looking for too. I'm wondering though; should I add some gloss varnish to the carapace to make it more 'bug like' or leave as is?
-
If you're glacial I must be something akin to continental drift on a slow day with a headwind!
-

Hah! Ditto.
Great painting. The flesh-coloured patches in particular are excellent, and it all comes together very well.
-
@ Elk101
Lol, seriously mate you should see how long it takes me to paint a single miniature. It's the exact reason that I never get anything finished because I get bored before I've managed to finish the first! lol
@ Scurv and Vermis
Thanks guys, I will manage to get a few more painted in the next couple of weeks and I'll keep this thread updated. Alas, real life is about to get in the way so I won't be able to get some more done of a couple of weeks at least. Stupid real life.... ;)
I'd still love to see some more tyranids from others though. Especially basic paint schemes scaled up to monstrous creature scale as I'm not quite sure how I'll do that yet....
-
So finally back from my trip with work! Finally managed to get on a little with my Tyranid swarm!
Next up I have 8 bases of rippers. Managed to nab these off of eBay for £7 and got them painted up in a couple of evenings.
All in all I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out. Really just scaled down versions of the Gaunts I posted earlier.
Here's the swarm as it stands...
Genestealers are arriving today so I should hopefully have those done in short order!
What do you guys think?
-
They really are top notch. I love the earthy colours. Superb!
-
Really nice. I've just painted some stealers (the classic blue/purple). They look okay but yours look stunning in comparison. Got Tyranid warriors and a huge pile of stealers still to do as well, not sure what scheme to use
-
Those rippers are cool, and you have a big horde too! The picture with the swarm running through the ruins reminds me of Gears of War.
-
@ Elk101
Thanks man, I'm just very aware that the entire army could look a little boring if I carry on exactly as I am. I'm going to see what I can do with the stealers to change it up (just a little mind you). :D
@ steders
I'd love to see them man so get them posted on here. I would like to think this thread could just be a showcase of some nid colour schemes, as well as my own shambling progress. I'm pretty sure we could all help out with some scheme ideas too ;)
@ Cherno
Thanks man. I'm going to have to make some more scenery though. The ruins work well for fantasy but don't quite fit my nids.....any ideas?
-
The swarm grows!
So I've managed to get the next unit finished up. A brood of Genestealers!
Here's a few pics...

And a couple of close ups...
I had a lot of fun painting these guys up. Mainly because They really didn't click until I started putting the finishing touches to them.
I think thats what makes me think that this scheme is working. It only works when all of the little bits come together. :D
I'm actually going to start building up some synapse creatures now I reckon. Something has to direct this horde after all right?! ;)
For those that are interested there are a few more pics of the swarm thus far on my blog!

This is going to be an awesome army. The stealers and rippers are great. What other gribblys do you have?
-
...I'm the most glacially slow painter in the world it was quite a surprise to get these done in a couple of sessions...
You paint, I don't. 'nuff said.
However, to clarify, I get bored THINKING of how many ways things go wrong when brush or spray can comes to my hand.
Really lovely work with subtle touches on real horrors, and you're hearing from those who can do, rather than my talk. Suck it up. ;)
As for GF's, mine has a 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' mug, and knows how to use it. You're a wise man...

@ smokezombie
So as it stands I've painted all I have. I've actually self imposed a buying ban whilst I'm painting up these guys. Until I've mostly finished a unit I'm not allowed to buy another that way I don't look at what I have got to paint and get intimidated by the plastic and metal mountain! :o
That said I've got some synapse creatures on my desk at the mo. I won't spoil which ones just yet ;)
@ The_Beast
Thanks man! I'm glad people are liking them. The feedback I'm getting is really motivating me to get this army finished. I'm certainly making much more head way with this project than any I've started before! :D
-
Deadspace 1, I'd be seriously pleased if I produced something like that. There's not a 'backslap' emoticon otherwise I'd use it!
-
Thanks man, lets just see how I scale it up to the bigger beasties. They're the true test of a Tyranid painter! Not gonna lie, I'm a little scared... :-X
