Title: Fallen Dwarf Leaders Completed (+ more) - Lord of the Rings
Post by: Giger on 21 March 2013, 04:39:15 PM
Just thought I would put up some (well quite a few) images of my LOTR miniatures along with the wife's.  Both armies are nearly completed now with just a few pieces to go, let me know what you think :)

They certainly are and very nice too

He certainly is though I think he could do with being a tad bigger but still a lovely miniature

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

Great models!

Disappointing title, I was expecting a H.R.Giger vision of LOTR, which I thought would be interesting to see!

However, it's always good to see a GW LOTR project.  :)

An impressive array with some beautifully painted minis there - and with a partner who wargames as well! - I'm somewhat envious! I think the best most of us can expect is a 'that's very nice dear, now when were you going to redecorate?'

Two great armies there, Giger.
I am very impressed.
 :-*

In fact, your showcasing of those Mordor chaps has made me realise that there are some great figures in the range, particularly the Nazgul riders.
(At least that is what I assume them to be).

I also note that you get to be the 'Bad Guys'.
 ;)

..... I think the best most of us can expect is a 'that's very nice dear, now when were you going to redecorate?'

 lol lol lol
That did make me chuckle....

Nice armies. I've always shunned away from painting many models. But I guess for War of the RIngs you'll need as many as you can possibly manage to paint. Well done and keep on collecting the armies.

Sorry about that but you just made me wonder what Giger would have done with Sauron or Shelob, yikes :o

Yep Mason I get the bad guys (as always), I've actually just finished off the two Saurons and have stared on the Fellbeast so some snaps will come soon.  I'm also adding some Fallen Dwarves to these lot, they come through Anvil Industries and they're amazing (well in my opinion).

We don't actually play with GW rules, we use Mantic's KOW rule set which works lovely and all we needed to do was play around with the army lists somewhat.

:D

Ever wondered about unit bases vs. movement trays?  Or do you like to keep the minis free for an odd skirmish?

Here's the finished Saurons (not great snaps though) along with the Fellbeast I have started, the flesh has been completed on this fella:

Nice work on that flesh. A pity the fell beast has such a large belly button ;)
Those Saurons look pretty cool. I thought the Necromancer version would look a bit more ethereal though if you maybe did some source lighting from the helmet?
Great work all round really!
Your posts here on him have made me think about using him as Nagash.

Is that the plastic Fellbeast kit as I am thinking of buying one?

Is it easy / nice to put together or did you have a lot of reenstuff work to get it looking so good?

Is it stable on a flight stand?

It certainly is the plastic Fellbeast and there is zero greenstuff on mine as it fit together very well.  The flight stand on mine is a snug fit but in a good way, I almost don't need to glue it its that secure.

Further to yesterday's post.

I am very impressed with the plastic Fellbeast and the plastic Great Eagles kits.  Both sets are excellent.

I already have the metal version of this kit so I built the GW flying Fellbeast as a standard Nazgul which left me some interesting spare parts.

I added a Perry WOTR horse and got a unique mounted version of the Witch King with sword.

I also have the severed head of the Witch King's Fellbeast as a scenery piece.

Nicely done Mick, I did something similar with my spare Ringwraiths (as you'll see below).

I've finished my Lord of the rings forces for now, though I will be going back to the Fallen Dwarves at a later date to paint them up, so here are the finished photos:

They are sculpted by Miniatures of the North and sold through Anvil Industries (the link above).
Here's the fluff that MOTN has for them which I intend to stick with for the most part.

There are 'fallen' dwarves in Middle Earth history too, though only really hinted at once or twice. I think these and their fluff wouldn't look too shabby in that role. Maybe more movie-style than oldschool dark-age style, but no biggy. ;)

Yeah, in The Hobbit Tolkien mentions that some dwarves had no problem allying with goblins and the like.

I think there was a reference to some dwarves-gone-bad in tales of the First Age in the Silmarillion, but it's been a while, so I'm not sure I recall correctly.

Those dwarves are great though! Funny how they're buried on a mostly-sci-fi site.

There is some talk of 'wicked dwarves' in The Hobbit and some more in the apocryphal works of Tolkien Silmarilon (History of ME etc). For the central stories the general theme is that they are unbending and resilient to the kind of servitude elves (turned orc) and humans would show to the dark powers.

Fantastic painting going on here, you're really livening up those anvil dwarves.
The dwarves in Tolkiens universe are not altogether good, not even Thorin and company. They bear many traits that are frowned upon by most people, like greed and jealousy. Besides, they are quick to anger and never forgets a wrong done...just think of Mim from the Children of Hurin, who hates elves so much that be betrays all of Turins company just to spite the one elven ranger.

There is a precedent for them within Middle Earth (however fleeting the mentions maybe) and personally I love how MOTN has taken this and given them a "movie" look as they don't look out of place at all with the rest of the LOTR range.

You can keep up to date with the Fallen Dwarves though MOTN's blog as there are new units on the way:

What I said is that the main theme is that they are not prone to be enthralled. They surely are right little shits from many other perspectives.

By all means, it is certainly a thread to explore and profit from in a wargaming and derrived storytelling perspective. I like your fallen dwarves.

And here's my attempt at some 'arty' photography, not sure if it worked all to well but let me know what you think:

Finally here are a couple of scale shots, as you can see the Fallen Dwarves are in perfect scale (and boy that Black Numenorean is a big chap):

Wasn't Mim from a slightly different race called 'Petty Dwarves' or something? and the last of his kind?

Still those figs look fantastic and a really good match with the GW stuff, and I think it is pretty believable that Sauron corrupted a few Dwarves, he had a few rings to tempt them with...

Love this thread  :D

I have a lot of (sadly, unpainted) Easterlings and this makes me want to paint them.

Those anvil dwarves fit in perfectly with a Tolkien setting... having played a lot of Lord of the Rings Online, which has a strong storyline for the 'Dourhand' dwarves, this seem like a great fit.

Thanks chaps,

Another week (or so) has passed and another command unit has been completed so I'm now on to standard units which will hopefully paint up a bit quicker (I had to re-paint the flame on the standard bearer as I wasn't happy with how it looked the first time round which ate up a chunk of time).

Even though I am not 100% sure about the 'idea' of fallen Dwarves in LotR, these certainly fit the Jackson-style Morrr-dorrr imagery that already exists very well.
Nicely painted too.

To be a total Tolkien Geek, there's a line in LotR or the Silmarillion to the effect that the elves are the only living thing that fought solely on the side of good in the battle that threw down Sauron at the end of the Second Age - and they don't forget that.

Lovely painting on some great miniatures!

I too recall that passage and also Tolkien wrote in a letter that some Orcs fought against Sauron in that battle or something! Hard to imagine!

Wasn't sure but thought I had read it somewhere.  lol

EDIT: Ah, what I had read was a quote by Tolkien that was easily misinterpreted to mean that some Orcs and other evil creatures also opposed Sauron in the 2nd Age.

Okay, I'll join the nerd parade. I was reading The History of Middle-Earth last night and found this line, written by JRR Tolkien, from the Council of Elrond, spoken by Elrond himself about the War of the Last Alliance:

'Great forces were gathered together, even of beasts and birds; and of all living things some were in either host, save only Elves. They alone were undivided, and followed Gilgalad.'

Now, since that was in the 'History of Middle-Earth,' I'm guessing it didn't make it into the final manuscript of the LOTR. Still, it's a pretty good basis for an argument for fallen Dwarves.

Am reading The Hobbit at the moment and found this part that absolutely demonstrates the existence of fallen Dwarves.

"They (goblins) did not hate dwarves especially, no more than they hated everybody and everything, and particularly the orderly and prosperous; in some parts wicked dwarves had made alliances with them." (The Hobbit, page 59 in the chapter called 'Over Hill and Under Hill')

So there you go...wicked dwarves, fallen dwarves, call 'em what you will! :)

Great models by the way! Excellent paint job!

I don't buy it and I am going to go anorak on your ass here... There are plenty of stories in the cannon, telling about dwarves behaving wickedly, but not one is talking about dwarves being servants of evil. The opposite is quite clearly stated, they are as a race very resilient to domination.

Erm,have to agree with Hammers though on the whole bad dwarf thing, empirical evidence (ie that which is written about in the canon) would suggest that it was an very rare event,if at all...

I'm going to back Joe on this detail...

"All living things were divided in that day, and some of every kind, even of beasts and birds, were found in either host, save the Elves only. They alone were undivided and followed Gil-galad. Of the Dwarves few fought on either side; but the kindred of Durin of Moria fought against Sauron."

Anorak away to your hearts content :) I was being fairly anorakish myself to remember this thread when I was reading The Hobbit.

Anyway, it didn't say that they were being dominated, or that they served evil per se, just that they made alliances with gobbos. I admit it seems a bit odd, but there you go.

On that basis (page 294 of my copy) one could have an regiment of 'Black Hobbits'.
Anyway I rather like Giger's take on the subject :-*  Even if I won't be using such an idea in my own LOTR project.

It was a scratch build, there were a couple of pieces of artwork that influenced it as well as needing to have a similar feel to the GW Balrog and Dweller.

Missed this thread before.

I like what's going on and that Balrog is certainly reminiscent of the older style images of LotR  8)

Tonight I finished my Fallen Dwarves, I've enjoyed painting these the most out of all my current armies so it feels a shame to come to and end.  However enough of the dilly daddle and on with the photos:

Here's an army shot:

And I just couldn't resist this one:

Overall I'm really pleased with how they look together.

Today heralds the completion of the Dweller, a great miniature to paint if somewhat challenging because of the internal fire effect.  Anyway first up are some of the later WIP pictures:

Well it's been a while since I posted in this thread (busying myself with Batman and Doctor Who miniatures) however as soon as these arrived they took priority, the Fallen Dwarf leaders and Dragon Fire teams.
These are wonderful sculpts that fit right in with the PJ aesthetic for LOTR but they'll also be featuring in games of 7th Voyage as well (in fact my Haradrim force will mainly be for that game as they fit in so well).

Anyway on to some pictures, I've just assembled the minis and I have since done the basing.  Thursday's looking good for spraying so I'll base coat them then ready for me to really get stuck in at the weekend.

These are comming along great! The red is especially striking in the otherwise muted colourscheme. Is it "just" mephiston red with some wash (devlan mud?) and a blood red highlight? Its very striking.

I quite enjoy the first three dwarves, and the last mage/preacher guy with a curly beard. Great stuff. (Jot another set of miniatures down on the ever expanding to-get list  ::) )

You're close affun, it's simply the old Mechrite red washed black and then highlighted with the Mechrite again.  Seems to work very well for such a quick process.

Ah yeah, I mostly used to use that one too. Mephiston is quite a lot inferior (Goopy, not the same brilliant tone, too gloss), but I just assumed every one had run out of it, like I have.

Ive got to agree though. Looks great!

I do like the Dweller, I have one I must get assembled and painted up sometime.

Very nice work on the dwarves too, even though I still have a bit of hard time reconciling the idea of Fallen dwarves! But on recently re-reading The Hobbit, there were certainly references to them... the chapter 'Over Hill and Under hill' when discussing the goblins, states; "...in some parts wicked dwarves had even made alliances with them."

And I am fairly sure there were references to dwarves who fought on the side of Morgoth, in the Sil...

Thank you,

Tonight's progress, really cracking on with these now and I've managed to get the base coats on the bases now.  I don't think I've painted this quickly before but the sculpts are just a joy to work on, any way on to the pictures:

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s169/psmorgul/IMG_0937_zps72fbe36d.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/psmorgul/media/IMG_0937_zps72fbe36d.jpg.html)

As you can see the two sorcerers have been finished off now so here's a close up of them:

I'm hoping the next update will be of the completed minis but that won't be until at least Sunday as we have a day of gaming planned for Saturday.

Thanks guys, the force is really coming together now but they'll be a pause before anything else is done as the new units need sculpting (though hopefully they'll be spear men/dwarves soon).

Who makes that sorceror with the brazier/staff???

All the characters will be available directly through Miniatures of the North soon:
