My whaleboat project was a warm-up for the current scratchbuild. This time I'm building a waterline PT-41, which was the 77' Elco boat that rescued Gen Macarthur from Corregidor. Like the rest, this one is 1/56th scale, done in basswood and thin plywood. I've finally made enough progress to post a few photos:

That is beautiful! :-*
I'll be watching this closely!!

Very nice work. looking forward to progress on this one. Rob.

Good lord! You must be one of the most prolific scratchbuilders I know. And with a huge variety of subjects too.
So, since each iteration is larger than the last, what's after this- a Corvette?
-
that is some wonderful scratchbuilding, very fine detail
-
Wonderful work as ever. You really are the undisputed master of this sort of thing. I love these threads. Only problem is now have the McHales's Navy theme stuck in my head as an ear worm.

Always a pleasure to see your newest build :-* :-*

A bit more detail added to the deck and torpedo tubes are just about finished:

someone got an A in woodwork.............gets an A+ from me

An AAA+++ from me :-*

Stunning :o
Once failed at a plastic kit of this so I follow in awe...

I have a suggestion. Rather than permanently attaching all the tubes have two that can be removed. Later in the war when PT boats spent most of their time attacking barges and other light craft they removed two tubes and added a shitload of other weapons (20mm Oerlikons, 40mm Bofors, a semiauto 37mm that they took off a P-39, Bazookas, free flight rockets, and mortars). Just a suggestion.
Beautiful work :) :) :)

You forgot depth charges... ;) So many fun options, but I'm trying to be faithfull to the original configuration of PT-41 at the time of MacArthur's rescue. At that time it had the 4 Mk VII torpedo tubes, 2 twin .50 turrets and two Lewis guns. Early in 1942 the original boat was painted entirely in a dark green - including painting over the windows! Experts disagree what the exact color was. I would have preferred my standard grey color but again I want it to be somewhat accurate.

It really is lovely work. Dugout Doug's Green Getaway boat eh? Never knew that.
When the Australian General Gordon Bennett did a similar runner from his troops in Singapaore, his name became a mild expletive in the Australian lexicon. And until the unfortunate demise of Prime Minister Harold Holt it use to be that someone leaving in a precipitate manner was said to have 'done a Gordon Bennett' ( now it's 'he did a Harry Holt, Holt rhyming with bolt). I've often wondered whether our American cousins ever came up with a similar creative use for Dugout Doug. Australians who stilll recall him usually preface his surname with 'that f#@&ing c#@*t '.
-
Very cool...
one of our current projects in progress uses the .50cal Turret that was designed by Preston Tucker and was adopted for use on the Navy PT boats. (no, it's not a PT boat or B-17) The turret would be a nice accessory for projects like this.

Assembly is just about finished so a few photos before she's in primer. The twin .50s were cobbled together from the nice guns sold by LAF member 6milPhil. The spotlight and Lewis guns are Pulp.

excellently done sir...
I'm interested in how smooth the paint job will be as I've never had a lot of success smoothing wood to the point where i can get a simulated painted metal finish - i can usually still see the grain no matter what type or how much filler or sanding sealer I use.

Yeah, I have the same issue - particularly with the end grain. Lots of sanding between layers of primer but with this much small detail the wood will show in places. I could have done this project in styrene but I prefer the old-school techniques so some woodgrain becomes part of the esthetic...

But surely these were wooden hulleed boats so a bit of grain showing through, albeit not in scale, is quite acceptable.
I think it looks superb, almost a shame to paint it green.

Nicely done, looks great :-*

Stunning work!
It looks perfect!

One of the main reasons for posting my work-in-progress topic is to encourage others to think big and try it for themselves. The trick (besides have a small amount of ability & too many tools) is to get a decent set of plans and have many photos and other models to study. Take your time, measure twice - cut & glue once!

Excellent scratchbuild 8) 8) 8) 8)

that is mindblowingly good! well done.
