Hi
I have decided to start up a small 28mm Napoleonic Skirmish project set during the Finnish War 1808-1809.
The Finnish War 1808-09, i.e. the war between Sweden and the Russian Empire was fought from february 1808 to september 1809. As a result of the war Sweden lost about a third of its territorie and a quarter of its population...
My first goal for this project are to preper terrain (much of my 15th centery terrain will be re-used) and paint 10-15 minis for each side to be able to play out some small skirmish games during the Swedish retreat in april and may 1808 , and then we will see...
I´ll have a short historical background at my blog (http://dalauppror.blogspot.se/search/label/Finnish%20War) and will add more about minis and rules in the following posts.
Best regards Michael
-
Sounds interesting and I never knew about the conflict 8)
cheers
James
-
Interesting. Looking forward to your project.
-
Interesting project, very little done on the conflict. Please keep us posted!
-
Great idea. Will there be a von Döbeln or a Sven Dufva miniature. Or Lotta Svärd?
-
Great project!
please tell us about the minis you are going to use/convert?
-
I'm SO going to follow you on this journey!
Interested to hear what minis are you going to use, which Finnish regiments you are going for, what rules are you going to use etc.
I have seen and played few games using GDB rules (not skirmish, I know) where the game boards were very true to actual battle places (the boards included even real sand from the battle fields :D ) so it will be nice to know what kind of terrain you will go for in skirmish action.
-
Greate that you find it a intersting project.
von Döbeln, a Sven Dufva, and Lotta Svärd I all hope will be present at some stage.
More about the minis to convert as soon as I get started, but I will begin with some Russians.
For rules Im not totaly sure but I think Ill start with some small games using Song of Drums and Shakos but my end goal are some large skirmish using Sharps Rifles from TFL.
Best regards Michael

Hi Michael
I too am looking forward to following you on this project
I have always had an interest in Scandanavian wars but sadly there never seems to be enought information in the English language .
All the best. Aly
-
Thanks Aly glad you will follow my project. Indeed there isn´t much about scandinavian history writen in English.
Sorry no pictures of minis yet, but I have put some pictures up at my blog about how I built me some houses for my Finish War setting and of course a brief history of the Falu Red Paint... (http://dalauppror.blogspot.se/2013/03/building-some-swedish-houses.html)

Stunning punamulta cottage Michael! :-* I must confess that I will shamelessly copy that at sone point :)
If you want to make Ostrobothnian houses, then yellow doors with white frames are a must. It's a tradition here (currently spending Easter holidays in Ostrobothnia).

Thanks Annti !
Seems like I have to studdy finish building and terrain more to get the tabletop right. Here in Sweden the blue door with white are the tradition:)
Learning some finish to, punamulta, ;)
Have a nice Easter up in Ostrobothnia !

Looks like I'll have to keep an eye on another section of the forum.
Lovely work Michael :)
-
I sent you some reference pics Michael :) Both if your buildings are perfect for Finnish war game, maybe a Swedish Swedish veteran has painted his cottage door blue? :)
-
Thanks Matys !
No blue doors on ostebotnia? not even one? :o Gueass I have to repaint it yellow then... ;)

Good looking start with the Russian Jägers Michael. Quite good amount for skirmish action. Will you have as many Finns and Swedes?
-
Thanks !!!
My first goal are to have 16 Russian jaegers and about 20ish Swedish/Finnish to get started with tea gaming. I also have 20-30 Russian Line infantry minis and some Officers to reinforce the Jaegers.
For the Swedes I will continue to build ordinary infantry.
My second goal are to be able to set up soem good size Sharp Practise games, suppouse I´ll need 50ish minis one each side for that.
I brobably also cavalry, a few artillery and campfollower/civillians to to both sides, we will see how long the inspiration last;)

Very nice looking Jägers Michael, bases need some snow though ;) That spring was extremely cold (temperatures of under -30C in March) and snowy, in some of the battles/skirmished Russian Dragoons advanced as slow as men walking due to heavy snow + snowstorm.
Can't wait to see what you got in store for us both miniature and terrain wise.

Yes I have been thinking of the snow... but decided to base the minis in summer bases even if some of the acctual gaming will be set on winter/spring terrain. The minis might also need some better clothes to withstand -30C ...

Great start

Wonderful collection of articles about the Finnish War from Helsingin Sanomat, the leading newspaper of Finland. The stories are unfortunately in Finnish but those of you interested in them might get something out of them with google translate still.
http://www.hs.fi/juttusarja/suomensota
The articles include stories about Finnish veterans who became beggars in Stockholm in 1810, two of them named (Örn and Spets, both typical military surnames that Finnish soldiers were given when they were enrolled... both of these chaps from Savolax), about the panic in Stockholm caused by sightings of Russians crossing the frozen sea, about Swedish kings order to let officers not having to wear a wig in Tornio etc...
Enjoy ;)
-
Very usefull info Antti, thank you very much. I Will indeed let Google translate work a bit.
Greate thanks for helping out to translate the maps to, very appreciated!!!
Best regards Michael
-
Happy to assist Michael. Let me know if there are some points in those articles that need perhaps more info etc.

Very good Michael, we will make a Finnish speaker in the end :)
Great to hear that Finnish infantry is on their way to stop the Russian advance.
-
Very good Michael, we will make a Finnish speaker in the end :)
In my experience, men do not need to be able to speak Finnish beyond, ja, kyllä, niin etc., they just need to be able to listen lol lol lol
-
Hi
I hope that you all have nice weekend !
I have just posted some pictures at my blog of the first test minis for the Swedish infantry to my Finnish War 1808-1809 Project. (http://dalauppror.blogspot.se/2013/04/minis-for-finnish-war-swedes.html)
Here are a picture I got from Pocoloco of how they should look like. Thanks for the help my friend !

The test minis look riktig bra Michael :-*
Great use of different bits, I think you have them very well covered now. I know you have just started but will you be making Savon prikaati at one point as well? I fnot, maybe I need to do them at some point (I'm originally from Savolax, quite near the place of few battles that took place there during the war.)
-
Thanks Antti !
No I haven´t planed the Savo Brigade at the moment, I´ll concentrat on the fighting along the Finnish coast. Would be very nice to see a Savo Brigade set up as at least the Jaegers had different hats :)
Best regards Michael

Here comes a picture of two finished Swedish infantry soldiers from the Nyland Regiment.
You can find more pictures of them (http://dalauppror.blogspot.se/2013/04/minis-for-finnish-war-swedes.html) at my blog as well as a short introduction of how they was built. (http://dalauppror.blogspot.se/2013/04/building-swedish-napoleonic-soldier.html)

Darn good work with the lads Michael.
Checking the parts list that you have used for your minis, looks to be quite a work to get them right?
Still, great project idea that I must place in the long waiting line :)

Coming along nicely :)

If I remember right, the Armeemuseet is Stockholm has an amazing 1:1 scale diorama of several battlefield scenes from this war - perhaps there are some online photos of that which might help? Everything you have posted so far looks awesome - you should be very pleased at your efforts!

back in 2008 they had a special exhibit about the war 1808-1809 and had severalmore of 1:1 dioramas.

IF I have the strenth and endurance my plan for Sharps Practice are to build the 2nd Batallion of the Nyland Regiment. a Swedish battalion was approximately 600 men in 4 companys, each company was subdivided in 2 platoons. Each battalion did also have 2 Jaeger platoons. My aim are to have 12 minis in each company, i.e. 6 in each platoon and of course some extra minis for the Officers/Big Men... 60-70 minis...might be possible...
Anyway, here are a pictures of the 1st Platoon of the 5th Company "Helsinge Company". You can find some more pictures of the first group of Swedish infantry for my Finnish War 1808-1809 project at my blog (http://dalauppror.blogspot.se/2013/04/1st-platoon-nyland-infantry-regiment.html)

The all out Swedish hero during the Finnish War must have been George Carl von Döbeln, of course we have few more aspire to the title, like J.A. Sandels.
For me von Döbeln is a perfect character as he was in command of the Nyland Regiment during the first 3-4 month of the war.
Here comes some pictures of my build of von Döbeln, you can find pictured of the painted mini i and a short re-cap of von Döbelns history at my blog. (http://dalauppror.blogspot.se/2013/05/george-carl-von-dobeln.html)
and the Drawing by Albert Edelfelt that inspired me.

Superb work once again Michael! :-*
I still hope you will include Sandels as well at some point though, you can then drink Finnish beer named after him and play skirmish :)
-
Brilliant conversion!
Will you do Sven Dufva? ;)

Och alla tyckte överallt, att Sandels talat rätt. "Ty visst var tanken", mente man, "hos Duva knapp till mått; Ett dåligt huvud hade han, men hjärtat, det var gott."
-
:D
-
Thank you !
Of course ther will be a Sven Dufva lookalike, but in Nyland Infantry or Jaeger uniform.
Best regards Michael
-
Well some say that the 'real' Dufva actually was Johan Zacharias Bång from Lohja (Lojo) [Swedish wikipage has wrong birth place for him]:
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Zacharias_B%C3%A5ng
-
Good info Antti !
Suppouse I have to build Sandels if I will make me a real Sven Dufva...
But first some Nyland Dragoons...

Historians should rename this war "the Top Hat War".

Historians should rename this war "the Top Hat War".
Highly practical headgear for sub arctic warfare. Lucky there weren't too many forests in Finland err ::)
-
no wounder the Swedes lost then... ;)
By the way they have been built but not painted...
-
Sorry for the Zombie topic, but I had some small progress in this project to during the summer….

Great to see you back at this theme Michael!

Thank you !!!

No thank you. Your work is a constant inspiration. After powering though your back ground info, I have started to look at American conflicts of the Napoleonic era.
Asid from the obvious American war of 1812, there was the wars against the Shawnee, Red stick creek war, early Seminal wars Florida, The Patriot war in Florida where a bunch of filibusters got there butts handed to them. The conquest of Florida. And then there was the undeclared French American Navel war and the Tripoli Barbary pirates war. To name a few.
While no where on the scale of the conflicts in Europe they are still interesting.
