Title: Cobblestone Streets
Post by: Saucy Jack on 30 March 2013, 01:10:43 PM
hi guys,

what do you use for your cobblestone streets or how do you make them?

Do you mean cobblestone perhaps?  :D

streets full of Mark Copplestone? You'll need a cloning device for sure. Otherwise, looking through the gothic horror board, you could find several ways to do it ;)

For my 25mm/28mm figures, I use O scale Random Course Stone plastic sheets/plastic card (7.5 inches x 12") by JTT Architectural Model Parts.  It comes in HO scale as well if you prefer something smaller.  You can see what it looks like in my Pirate Gallery at www.warin15mm.com/Pirates.html

I should have added that Plastruct makes the exact same thing in O scale/same size sheets and the exact same stone shapes.  The item number for Plastruct is 91560.  Despite the fact that it is identical to the JTT, Plastruct is about $4.00 more for the same two-sheet pack.  The JTT  item number is 97445.

Yes of course cobblestone.

looks good in your pirate village "War in 15mm" - so all you have to do is paint them and cut them to the size you want? I google them and the images just look like plain white paper

I've been looking on the JTT website but can't seem to find either item.

Do you have a direct link to the page with them on?

Lemax ceramic village have sheets of textured material - a Pebble Mat and Brick Mat.

I have seen that and it's amazingly chap, however getting it to Denmark is not. It's just the product I'm looking for but paying £20 in shipment for a £3 product is doing my head in.

There's still a significant hole in the market for affordable, good looking options out there for covering large areas of table.

Most of these model kit ones look fantastic but try covering even a 4'x6' with them. Then erasing the seams between the joins seem like more trouble than it's worth given the quantity needed. The lemax ones are pricey and the cobbles are totally out of scale.

I think the best answer is in the textured wallpaper arena but I haven't quite nailed down the exact type.

If I were to home-make it I would take a large black cloth or sheet and make up a rubber stamp with a random cobble pattern on it and with gray fabric paint meticulously press it all out.

I did do this for my docks, but that was quite tedious and not recomended for a really large area.
Small areas it is ok, as I just sat in front of the TV and watched that at the same time while doing it.

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30667.30

Anything larger than those would have been a hell of a job.
Be warned: Not one for the faint hearted!

(Bottom of that page is also the textured wallpaper board that I ended up settling for. It works almost like cobblestone, but can still be used as a standard rocky plain, I reckon..)

Gotta be painted first.......

I've also learnt to not bother attempting any wallpapering the bedrooms.

I made a large single 54"x96" cobblestone sheet from a faux leather basketball material.

Not the cheapest mat, about $75-85, but it travels well and is great for cons.

This is a mat I printed on sail canvas. The art was a public domain cobblestone background jpeg. I set the print size for 4' x 4' and tiled the image so that it reapeated to fill up the area. Its very light and can roll up or be folded loosely.

I love what Skrapwelder has done but it's still infeasible for most of us.

Though this basketball material has me intrigued and may just fit the bill:

Digging further I found this Cascade pattern in Coal - no clue on the cost of this option though:

You can find some on ebay UK with a search for 'basketball material'.
It costs about £30 for a metre of it, which isnt much cheaper than buying a Zuzzy mat, though.
Certainly more expensive than lentils!

I just ordered a pack of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JTT-SCENERY-97443-FIELD-STONE-1-48-O-SCALE-2-7-5-x12-SHEETS-JTT97443-/110997008346?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item19d7efefda#ht_695wt_932

We'll see how it works. When you look at basing 50+ minis, the idea of nice resin bases get a little too pricey. Plus if I ever want to build roads, atlese the bases and roads will match.

Yeah, I have that auction on my watch list. I look at it every now and again :)
I'd need two metres though to do a 4' x 4'. Will probably bite at some point though to use as a travel mat.

B&Q had a roll that was suitable. There was also a nice flagstone looking one that looked interesting, but that was a bit more expensive as it was bathroom paper.

£6.50ish in the end and tonnes left. I'll be getting the scenery on it later and seeing if it needs to be lightened, but as this only took a couple of evenings to do, quite happy for now. Double sided board (desert on the other) - dunno why I didn't think of doing it before!

I have a roll of wallpaper put aside for the same purpose. Yours looks pretty effective. The only thing I was worried about was the embossed detail getting flattened by buildings and scenery or getting torn.

I gave the surface a good wash of PVA which stiffened every up and made it a bit tougher. Tears and catches are something that I'll to live with - I'll call it "character"  :D

I've been using this method for a couple of years and I'm still using the same pieces I originally cut. Some of the paintowrk does come off but it's minimal and easy to touch up. Mind you I lay mine in between buildings so I'm not sure what effect heavy terrain will have on them, it's pretty sturdy stuff though:

I was going to suggest some cookie-cutter type things to press into styro, but the wallpaper and faux leather look brilliant.

"so I'm not sure what effect heavy terrain will have on them,"

Seems like you could spread something on the back, TC, to have it lay flat AND support the 'dimples', but sometimes I think too much.

You've already seen that in action, or non-action.  ::)

Well, in my ongoing quest for the best way to make cobbles I decided to bite the bullet and ordered some of the bobbled faux leather. It arrived today and I have to say I'm impressed although the price makes me twitch. The texture isn't as deep as I hoped but it should still take a drybrush I think. I'll try it out and post something in my thread.

For my needs, I bought a pack of Plastruct's "Polished stone" sheets for 16€. Pricy, but it comes with two sheets which should suffice for the basing of dozens of minis. The sheet I got was G-scale (1/24) so the individual stones are a bit large and thus look more like flagstones than cobbles, but a little exaggeration makes it a) easier to paint and b) more visually distinctive.
