Here's the start of a big project I was working on a few years ago never got a around to showing off. If you've seen my D&D thread (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=32158.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=32158.0)) hopefully it won't shock you to learn that however big my D&D pile is, my Citadel pile is even bigger, and possibly even dearer to me.
It just happened I was taking some pictures of some of these around the time I heard what happened to Kev Adams, and so I'd like to post these with a shout out to the Goblin Master and with wishes for a speedy recovery. And I think it's pretty great how the community is responding with Goblin Aid.
Anyway, here's the tip of a big iceberg, the first few orcs o' the Old Skull Tribe. These were painted back in 2009. I have a Mordheim-size gang painted up at this point so more pics to come. And tons more figures wait to be painted one day.

BTW, haven't been able to find this figure in the Citadel catalogs and flyers until the 1990s catalog, but I'm pretty sure it's from the 80s. Can anyone peg him to a specific range or release?

Basing
The gang I'll be showing for awhile here were painted back in 2009-2010. I'm not sure when I'll be getting back to the project to do more. Part of the reason is a dilemma with regard to basing. You'll see I use thin, flat bases and my aim with the terrain on them was to represent generic ground that would look equally good in outdoor and underground games. This is a bit of a tall order, but I like the result of many of the figures in the gang. One of these too, the one with the green face on the shield, you'll have to excuse though, as originally I had a different terrain represented and then just covered it over with Sculptamold. His is a bit crap next to the others, and I've tried to distract your eye with a colorful bit of fungus. Generally these bases are Sculptamold with a little glue and a few bits of Woodland Scenics talus and course ballast.
I'm at a cross-roads regarding the basing. Part of me is being drawn back to using slottas and having the terrain be in the more traditional outdoor variety. Given how many figures are in the collection, the consequences of the decision are far-reaching, and that's one reason the D&D project (free of any concern for slottas) gets all the attention I have to devote to painting, these days. I might say more about this later.
Painting
Call me a traditionalist, but Citadel orcs aren't right unless they are John-Blanche-yellow-green. Browns, greys and olive hues are best saved for other figure lines and I have never been taken with the minty and shamrock greens currently en vogue. My recipe is to start over a black primer layer with a dark green. I put the dark green on my wet pallet and then build up through a brilliant middle green, through almost pure orange-yellow, and then put some few whitish yellow-tan highlights as needed. I experimented with glazes on a few figures but these and most you'll see coming up just use the straight build-from-black-to-light method. In recent times I sometimes do underpainting, and I plan to expand my use of this as I now have a quiet compressor for my airbrush, but as I said these orcs were painted years ago. The specific colors I used, from dark to light, were:
GW Orkhide Shade
P3 Necrotite green (this is the key for the intense color)
GW Snakebite leather and/or Bestial Brown
GW Tausept Ochre (careful with this one as the pigment is so strong)
GW Golden Yellow
For the gums, mix in a little GW Dwarf Flesh
Add a tiny bit of Vallejo Pale Sand if needed for final highlights
Shields
The shield designs are from old Warhammer publications. These are both from a color spread in the Warhammer Armies hardback.

Wonderful painting on those, really like the skin tone (agree about the JB colour) and the shields :-* :-* :-*
cheers

-
Simply outstanding work. The shields are just fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
-
Damn those are nice! This is going to sound very odd, but the last shield reminded me of a tattoo that I recently saw on an arm; you wouldn't be a tattoo artist would you? Whatever you do for a living these are pure art and as everyone has already mentioned the skin tone and the shields are outstanding. I hope you post that Mordeim warband soon.
Cheers

The Old Green Guys look FANTASTIC after your OUTSTANDING brushwork...the shields are WORKS OF ART! VERY WELL DONE!
-
Fantastic, the shields are superb!
-
Hands up who's got wood! lol
These are brilliant. Love the skin tones. Bright but not too bright. Lovely armour and metallics too.
Oh, and the shields... I'm envious as hell.
:-*
-
Just wonderful! Possibly the coolest paintjobs on old-school GW Orcs I've had the pleasure to clap my eyes on.
-
My hand is up!
Those are wonderful and full of awesome!
Please give us an update soon!

Thanks and no, not a tattoo artist. lol :) You know, the design is from the Warhammer Armies hardback circa 1988, so several possibilities exist. The artist may have been influenced by a tattoo, either one he saw or one he saw in a book of flash designs, or maybe the one you saw was on a big orc fan, or maybe coincidence. As Hannya points out it looks like a Japanese Noh mask, maybe the inspiration for both the tattoo and the shield. As for what I do for a living, I'm one of the many that has been to art school and is now in an unrelated career. However, said career is stable enough now that I am trying to carve out more creative time. For awhile even painting miniatures for myself was a luxury... now I am hoping to branch out to a few other endeavors as well.
... And yes, I'm hoping to photograph some more soon! Now that I have the twin magic bullets of Adobe Lightroom and this lighter gray background I feel like nothing can stop me. lol

Yes, the face on the shield is a classic and somewhat popular tat design.
Now you need to do a few more orcs with dragons, foo dogs and koi on their shields! :D

A couple more members of the core gang for you today. I'm putting these two together a) for size comparison and b) as so far they have pretty much remained in base-to-base contact through the games of Mordheim I've played with them so far. At least until Morbog died, that is. After that there was really no one around to keep the big fella in line and he took to standing about moping.

I spent a few hours converting the stone troll. The neck is extended and his nose was cut off and redone. The necklace is scratch-made from flexible brass wire flattened in a vice to represent a leather strap. The stones are greenstuff and they have been tied on to the brass strap with thread, which is to say the knots are actually knots. The gloss blood is Tamiya Red Clear, and the eye also was given a gloss varnish. When these trolls came out around '93 I thought them too muppety, but later got the bug to do them up in a meaner, more menacing style to at least mitigate the muppety flavor a little. I intentionally painted it in tones that might actually serve as camouflage it it's stony natural environment, and it was a limited-palette exercise. I was using some Brian Froud illustrations as inspiration for the colors and that's where I picked up the idea for the necklace as well. I should say I also gathered reference for the meet and bone and surely wouldn't have achieved it as well I did without having done so. Despite the lack of attention-grabbing colors the figure won best conversion at the Kublacon painting awards in 2010 and a group of him and several dozen orcs won a gold master class award.
BTW if I wanted to contribute a painted goblin for Goblin Aid what would be the best way to do it? One option would be a raffle I heard about and I also hear mention they might just ebay stuff directly? I don't Facebook. I realize it may be too late to join the bandwagon.

Hi, those are two fine looking figures!
Well done, keep 'em coming!
GS

Both the Troll & Orc are BEAUTIFULLY painted & based with a SPLENDID choice of colors. The Orc's shield is OUTSTANDING! GREAT WORK
-
Amazing work sir!
Very impressive.
Your painting skills are a real inspiration.
:-*
-
That is awesome. I love the new nose.
Give dags a pm about the goblinaid thing.
-
As per contributing to Kev Adams, I think the best place to ask would be the 'Kev Adams stabbed' thread over at the Open Talk board; I am sure they will be able to help.
Now about the painting, everyone (including me) loves your painting style, and I for one am not surprised that you have won painting awards but I want to talk to you today about your bases. I love your bases! There is something about their simplicity that makes them look realistic and suit the minis perfectly. By simplicity, I mean there is no grass or tufts or flowers etc, just some rocks but the bases look like they are straight from Mordor or some such evil place. To review: miniatures painted to a top level but really loving the bases.
Cheers,
Damien
-
Sigh, every time I see what you've done it makes me dislike you just a little bit more :) Your work is fantastic and inspiring. The Troll is simply awesome.
-
Fantastic conversion!! But the painting job is stunning!! :-* :-* :o
-
Thanks all, glad you like these!
Thanks for the heads up re goblin aid, Damien and Beefcake!

Cheers, thanks! You know originally I started doing these bases because my Dwarven Forge had that new resin smell and I have always been planning on using my Citadel figs in dungeon crawls as much as outdoors. The low profile was so they can stand next to furniture without looking out of place/out of the scene, and the ground effect was my best attempt (out of dozens) at terrain that could equally be above or below ground. And John Blanches figs pictured in the book Ratspike (and now shown on the web in various places like Eldritch Epistles and Dave King's blog) were a source of inspiration.
Anyway, thanks very much for the vote of confidence!
Still, I have to say lately, though I really dislike some things about slottas, I feel myself pulled inexorably back to them. lol And pulled too toward doing the usual plants and gravel or the mossy old school effects Dave King and Orlygg at the Realm of Chaos 80s blog do so well. I actually was doing them pretty much that way way back all those years ago. I have even thought of pulling these orks off and rebasing them.
Dang it, I really truly lose sleep over these things! o_o lol It was so easy, by comparison, picking a base scheme and base type for my D&D figures. That's the real reason the D&D project has been getting more of of my time than this one!
Also, I think I mentioned it already, but if you want to try it ... I use sculptamold and woodland scenics talus and ballast to get the effect. Absolutely minute bit of sculptamold with a drop of water and some white glue, applied with a tootpick and brushed in place with a damp brush. Sculptamold is really good for natural-looking textures.
-
Very nice work as usual. I like the low profile bases and the minimal ground clutter looks good and fits well with the less cluttered style of these classic miniatures.
-
Dumping all I've completed so far. Too many for metadata but they are all Perry, Adams and Morrison figs from circa 83-91.

Really happy with the yellow and black scales. I did the scales yellow and came back with the black. Ian Miller was the inspiration with his colorful scales. I wonder what I could do with colored ink and technical pens on future figures to try to capture his look and feel in a miniature.

I spent ~ an hour converting the crossbow on the crossbow guy. It's one of the old Citadel black plastic ones but is totally carved up and redone. I think I'll be getting some Foundry ones for the rest of the squad if I can as I'm not doing that ten times!

One of only two or three pre-slotta orcs in the European collection is the one with two handed sword with his tongue out. I think I had to fix up his feat, and I definitely did a tiny bit of work on the tongue. It's funny to think how great these sculpts were so early on. Check out those gnarly severed heads strapped to his back.

Another Perry favorite is the wolf pelt guy with the Dwarf head. Really happy with both those features. Can't recommend enough, when you paint a wolf, be looking at a wolf, don't fake it, even when your desired result is somewhat cartoony.

A friend of mine pointed out the expression of the following dude with 2-handed axe and to paraphrase his sentiment: they look so happy but you're not at all fooled. He could go from standing around grinning to lopping heads in a split second. When he's done he'll go back to standing around grinning, no remorse, just fond recollections of it and eager anticipation of doing some more of it. That's why he looks like pleased with himself in the first place. He's got two shrunken heads on his belt as souvenirs. It's these too-pleased-with-themselves orcs you have to watch out for, with the shit-eating grins, as they're true psychopaths.

You may also see I slipped a few more in here that haven't got the individual-shot treatment yet, the night goblins and squigs. Watch for more night goblins in the future, I pretty much have an army of them. As for the squigs, they are some of my most successful figures of all time I think. Couldn't be more happy with them. I do plan to give their tongues and teeth a coat of gloss varnish, though, and I'll give them the individual treatment when I do.
The set can be viewed in its entirety at flickr along with the rest of my collection in the improved flickr interface: http://www.flickr.com/photos/spooktalker/sets/72157633012161816/
And I put these up on Coolminiornot for any who'd like to do me the service of rating them. Let's show 'em what these old figures can be.

Dear Mr Spooktalker,
I would like to thank you for taking me back some twenty years plus, to my teenage years when I used to have these figures, and wish that I still did.
You have painted them in a style that takes me back to the same period but with a much more professional touch.
I would like to say that I much appreciate the walk down memory lane but would also like to say that now you have made me want these great figures all over again, and for that I ammore than a little peeved....
Dammit, man!
I want these figures now!
What have you done to me....?
