Title: And I proclaim this place to be known as... Obsession!
Post by: Legionnaire on April 01, 2013, 06:23:16 PM
Work and family responsibilities have now been dealt with and I have received and put together a few of my orders, still awaiting delivery from Sarissa (shop, a house and 3 Small Plus buildings). I got some Renedra plastic barrels and fences from Arcane Scenery, delivery day after I ordered!!! Two General Purpose wagons from 4Ground and I tried to scratchbuild a Boot Hill. The base and most of the stuff is white foam core and I didn’t get the PVA glue to cover everywhere, hence the white spots. I can always pretend they’re flecks of snow…

Just a re-naming of Ashbury Poco. I had the suggestion at a different thread that I should name the town Obsession instead (it's all Za Zjurman's fault!  :D). In truth, I didn't have enough whole fence for the Boot Hill, but on second thought, now it can fit in if I play anything Deadlands-esque as well!!

What, no pictures of the ribbon cutting!? :D

Great lookin' stuff so far.

No ribbon cutting, my lead people just emptied their guns in the air, hurrahed the town and got lead, I mean DEAD, drunk for two weeks.  lol

I DO blame you, because so far you've been right on both accounts. It is developing into an obsession ( I need this, and that, and those...) and it's becoming an expensive habit.  lol

And to quote myself: Damn you lot with your shiny baubles and eyecandy!!

Received my Sarissa order today (5 buildings) and couldn't wait so I cobbled two of them together and made some signs in MSPaint. I read Heisler's review of a few kits and that was good thinking, as I encountered the same problem he did with a few flaps that were too thick for the slots so I had to sand them down a tiny amount to make them fit. Never had this issue with Battle Flag's buildings...

Anyway, I give you Anselm Hoffmeier's General Store and Lars Sorensen's Pharmacy/ Dentist/ Veterinarian!

Shame on you, Legionnaire!

(A great start, though, if I am being entirely honest.  :-*)

Fine looking additions to Obsession, I like especially the multi-talented Sorensen, he must earn pretty good solid buck with his skills :)

So how is the quality of these buildings in comparison to other you have built before, besides the minor sanding issue, that is?

I like that Sarissa buildings a lot, they have a more extensive line including some very nice adobe ones (although I don't have any of the adobe ones). Right now Battle Flag is like the Cadillac of western MDF buildings but Sarissa is not far behind. What the out of spec MDF that occasionally shows up from Sarissa is the only thing that really bothers me about their stuff. The only other knock I might have against Sarissa is when they try and make supports for the porches part of the sidewalls (check their north american line) instead of just separate pieces.

I be buildin' a town with a hundred or more buildings but they all be scratch built.  (well, I started it but haven't got much done on it lately...hopefully soon)  And, yup, there be photos...

Now that would be a REAL Obsession I'd gladly have  lol. Please send me your buildings!!!  lol

It's not a spelling mistake  ;), the owner of the shop thought it'd lend Obsession a certain cosmopolitan flair.  :D

I have seen quite a few signs/notices etc, on photographs of real buildings from the old west, that have spelling mistakes. One even had the letter 'S' in reverse, and no it was not like the famous 'left handed' photo of Billy the Kid where the photo had been developed from using the glass negative the wrong way around.

Proper bartering...I like it!

I'm probably going to buy a couple of the 4Ground American Legends cabins - even if they're a bit out of the era...my next "stage" in building tables is more wilderness boards, and then a Mexican villa eventually.

Yup, he doesn't play the old west so it came to a good home.

I have a 4'x4' table and limited storage space, but would like to get maybe 2-3 larger buildings, a livery and maybe that Sarissa hotel... some outhouses and a blacksmith. Scatter terrain and next phase would be to get interior for all those buildings  :D.

Now most furniture I have ideas where to get, but does anyone know where I can get hold of periodic weapon packs (pistols, repeaters, shotguns etc)? I've seen Reaper do one for their Savage Worlds but it comes with hands... Need it for the gunsmith, will try to scratchbuild weapon display cabinets.

Hmmm...the only one I can recommend off the top of my head is that Perry's do an ACW cavalry box which comes with separate carbines...but that's it.  No idea on the others.

Yeah, I am broke right now, so I'm putting off buying up interiors.  4Ground is pretty good about giving you some minor interior bits when you buy a building, so here's hopin'!  lol  Damn this crack habit.

It's been a bit quiet I know, but too much work and other commitments have had to be dealt with. I have only managed to finally paint my 12 horses  :'(.

BUT I'm having faith in the resurrection of Ye Ole West! I have roped in a guy at my gaming club, possibly two that have enjoyed the games we've played and now we are looking at purchasing Dead Man's Hand (have to wait until payday Friday).

Then I might also invest in a few more Sarissa buildings (The Corner Hotel is mighty tempting), a couple of Artizan minis and depending on the paycheck, maybe those Blue Moon civilians too...

Legionnaire,

My group has adopted a "host your game" philosophy which works really well with skirmish games.  If one of us likes a game or genre enough we take sole responsibility for hosting it - providing all the terrain/rules/miniatures.  If others players like it enough they are encouraged to buy some minis, or even terrain etc. (if they really like it!).

It's expensive for the hosting player, but it keeps from developing a Warhammer style issue where everyone has to invest tons of money just to play a simple game.  For instance, I have a full Old West set-up and a couple of friends just have 10-12 models to represent their posses/gangs when we play.

However, I also have enough models to cover 3-4 posses/gangs.  It seems to work well so far, as it's always hard to get more than a couple people who really like one genre ---- yet everyone in the group would of course love to play a fully fleshed out game.

Most players don't feel too bad about buying up a dozen models to play...as long as you bring the goods for them to play on! lol

Thanks to all of you, I spent the better part of the past 5 days building my Western Town from scratch, and I don't even have figures for it yet.  I'm thinking of naming it Purgatory, just can't decide what state to place it in.

I have been struggling to get people interested in playing "my" games down at the club, but I believe that my recent MDF-purchases have managed to sway people my way. And I don't mind putting up the terrain/ minis for people to have a game with, after all, the reason why I play is to have fun!

Thanks to all of you, I spent the better part of the past 5 days building my Western Town from scratch, and I don't even have figures for it yet.  I'm thinking of naming it Purgatory, just can't decide what state to place it in.

Nick,

I don't know if I'd go with the FifteensAway state.  No one else will "get it", I fear.  (But thanks, Legionnaire, for the nod.)  However, Purgatory can be placed in several states (or territories) and be immediately believable (and probably 19 out of 20 people won't know it isn't a real place, even in the actual western state).  I'd say any of these states: Colorado (they have a resort so named), Arizona, Utah, or California.  It is often forgotten that the first real Wild West state was California -- and it all started with the gold rush of 1849.  I am struggling with the same issue of where to place my fictional county (still not revealing the name until I finish the courthouse with the name on it - you will all be jealous, just wait and see).

Legionnaire,

Worry less about getting people advance interested in a game and just show up ready to play with something that looks cool and you'll get players.  Always seems to work that way.

And for all, stay tuned for when my The Whole Wild West, All At Once game hits the convention circuit here in California.  It's still a long ways out because it is so huge but it will be cool.  Recruiting people to help put it together, so far there are four of us.  And, no, Legionnaire, you can't have my buildings but you can come on over and play with us if you are in the area.   :)

Payday tomorrow, so here is a short "I want" list:

- 1 large MDF building (watched the first seasons of Deadwood so I was thinking something like The Gem...)

- 1 Scaffold (Sarissa/ Battle Flag?)

- 1 set of Dead Man's Hand (haven't decided on if I shall buy any of the gangs as well, have quite a few minis and I thought I'd buy some Artizan and maybe the Blue Moon Manufacturing Tombstone Civilians.)

- Probably walls and the 4Ground Thunderboxes set.

Roll on tomorrow...

Cheers Groove51, and I plan on getting a few more buildings, but unfortunately that's not going to happen this month  :-[. There was a cock-up with my bank shifts, and I may not being paid for them until next month!!!

So my hobby expense this month is only going to be Dead Man's Hand (which I've ordered today...)

Been a looong time since an update, been very busy since I became a qualified TA (Theatre Assistant, surgery) at the end of April, single parenthood and starting to play music with some friends again  :). Finally had the time (and energy) to paint up the four civilians from 1st Corp, a bartender, two saloon girls and a doctor.

A small update in the Old West endeavour. I purchased a gallows and a corrall kit from Sarissa Wednesday, arrived yesterday so I put them together this morning before work. A pleasure to work with.

There will be a few minis to follow in a couple of days, ordered some Artizan minis and have basecoated them.

I'm plodding on in the Old West vein and have made some more purchases. Three hills, a river section and I made four scatter terrain markers out of old CD's, flock and some Javis Mixed Autumn Lichen (got that for £1.90 with free delivery off of eBay.) Also scored me some Foundry town folk and 5 mounted riders.

A little update, finally managed to get my 19 civilians painted. Some are finished, while others await some more varnishing/ basing. I tried to paint the front row as Celestials, the group on the left were intended as more Hispanic and the right group are bog standard Westerners. The minis are all Foundry.

I just finished a couple of civilians (which gives me about 7 total...not really enough, but eh!)  lol  Looks good.

Is there enough stuff at any given time?  :D I got them for a decent price on Ebay and have now "enough" to choose from (didn't I see a barber somewhere, and a blacksmith and...). Still have 5 mounted minis to undercoat and paint as well before I'm back to 100% painted minis again.
