Title: Old school adventurers : work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on 12 April 2013, 06:43:37 PM
Hi,

First, I bought Dungeon and Dragons adventure system games (Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon). I played it solo, and liked it a lot. It remembered me the good old days playing D&D or Warhammer RPGs.

After Warrior Heroes Legends has been released, I bought it and  started to work on all the parts of a whole project : playing miniatures light RPG in solitaire; with all fancy stuff I didn't have when I was younger : fully painted 3d scenery, 3d dungeons, fully painted miniatures.

For exterior scenery, I'll use heroscape pimped sets + all usual scenery (trees, houses, bridges, roads). It's currently under progress, you can follow the project here :

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=42012.15

For 3d dungeons, you can follow the project here (it started as an addition to D&D wrath of ashardalon, and became a part of my new project) :

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=42009.0

And for miniatures, you can see my first batch of monsters (for now, repainted or painted plastic D&D minis...I have to finish the ravenloft box painting too...I also hope, in the future, to replace them by metal classic fantasy creatures) here :

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=41980.0

Then, after reading some interesting topics here concerning old school minis (Ral Partha, Grenadier, etc...), and remembering that I had some of these figs in my youth, I start thinking about making all my heroes in metal classic fantasy miniatures.

So I found and restaured some lost minis (ral partha adventurers) I had in all my mess (I hope the classes I give are the good ones) :

3 stages Cleric :

Gnome Illusionnist, halfling thief :

Dwarf fighter, human ranger :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4070041_zpsc6c40eeb.jpg)(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4070045_zps5e729a66.jpg)

Human assassin (very small comparing other humans I have, true 25mm mini I guess...any other idea for possible race representation very welcome), human fighter (need to be fixed)

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4070047_zps9d7922cf.jpg)(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4070049_zps56dc39b5.jpg)

Elf fighter :

Today I received a few new figures (ral partha again) :

dusty new old stock !  lol

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120071_zps1441bf59.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120071_zps1441bf59.jpg.html)

Some dwarf fighters :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120086_zpsb49a131a.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120086_zpsb49a131a.jpg.html)

One 3 stages character female fighter :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120088_zpsf5e41e8c.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120088_zpsf5e41e8c.jpg.html)

And I'm waiting for another delivery of minis, mostly figures to complete 2 or 3 stages characters incarnations (to use in my games as the same character in diferent states :  beginner, intermediate and experienced, depanding their level).

I started the work basing the first figures on wargames factory bases (quite similar to D&D minis bases, to better match my monsters, and also bring the minis a few millimeters of extra height). I also textured the bases (3d effect acrylic paint).

I wanted clean simple bases, to match both d&d minis I have (based in flat black), exterior and dungeons scenery, and to keep them as "sober" and classic as possible.

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120079_zps606382fc.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4120079_zps606382fc.jpg.html)

To be continued. Now I need to finish basing for the newcomers, prepare the figures for primer (I think about black primer, wich is unusual for me, but as the minis are quite small...It will be easier to reveal the details, I believe?).

Really like the figures - what is that brown 3d acrylic paint stuff you use to build up the bases? It seems to work wonders - much better than my attempts with Polyfilla or its equivalents.

Thanks for the comments,

Concerning the bases thick paint, it's made by Raphael, named "3D color" :

http://www.raphael.fr/catalogue/home_deco/home_deco.pdf

You can apply it with an old brush, a color shaper or a painting knife. You can add water to make it more or less muddy, or more similar to dirt.

Today I finished the bases of the last figures I received :

Tommorow, I'll finish preparation, then a coat of black primer, and next week, I'll start painting  8)

I love those dwarves, I believe they were called 'Elite Dwarf Guards' (or something like that), sculpted by Tom Meier. Tom is the reason the old Partha sculpts are so awesome. Btw, I have these guys too, they paint up really well.

Can't wait to see these painted up,

Here's the last additions until painting begins !

the 2 stages dwarf (only 2 stages, the 3rd one is too diferent for my own taste) :

Man I love all these minis, they bring back so many memories. I remember your superhero thread and love your painting style, I think that you are going to make these minis look fantastic; can't wait to see them all painted up. (You are also making me jealous, I don't have a lot of the minis you are posting).

Cheers,

Thanks

Some of them are really vintage, bought (already a bargain in a wargames store, when I was student) about 15 years ago (the "dungeon!" adventurers pack).

Some of them are coming from special offers on a french e-store (about 2euros for the guard dwarfs, and maybe 3 for the 3 stages female warrior). The other ones came from Ral pArtha e-store (a bit more pricey, but still reasonnable comparing to some other companies, and the airmail shipping cost is really decent and fast from UK to france).
.
I also can't wait to start painting. I'm not sure of the technics I'll use for now. I usually paint big minis (30-32mm), where there is "a lot of room" to work.

Hi,

Here's the last miniatures I received. Now my band and NPCS are all there.

The 3stages elve mage fighter (too cool) :

The beginner stage of the 3stages human ranger :

the completed 3 stages human fighter (I added the intermediate stage, I still have to fix the broken axe on the experienced stage figure) :

The 2 stages halfling thief (or rogue?) :

All my 3 stage characters :

My 2 stages characters (I didn't liked the intermediate minis...But maybe I'll buy them anyway to have the complete range) :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4220201_zpsa811ff65.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4220201_zpsa811ff65.jpg.html)

I'll finished the current 30 zombies project I have this week (and finish basing my last adventurers), and hopefully I'll start painting my adventurers this week end.

I'm thinking about converting one of my dwarfs guards to make the 3rd dwarf adventurer...

Concerning painting, I'll paint the minis by groups of 3, of course  ;)

Hi,

I'm finishing my first batch of zombies for ATZ, so I will be able to start my adventurers very soon (probably next week end). Until that, I'm fixing my advanced stage human warrior :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290216_zps51995db6.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290216_zps51995db6.jpg.html)

I kept most of the original design of the missing axe. Tommow I'll make the details with green stuff.

I also started some conversion work on a ral partha advanced stage halfling. I noticed that the last halfling I received had a bad molding line on his face. I noticed the problem to the store I bought the minis, who directly (great support!) said they would send me a new replacement mini, wich I received today.  So I decided to recycle the bad figure, fixing the defects the best I can and convert it in a intermediate stage adventurer.

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290212_zpsb5c4dba7.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290212_zpsb5c4dba7.jpg.html)

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290215_zps15a77113.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290215_zps15a77113.jpg.html)

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290214_zps8e01971d.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4290214_zps8e01971d.jpg.html)

I first modified the weapons, and sliced it the head crown/helmet. I sanded the casting defects, made a new mouth, and tommorow I'll finish fixing it with green stuff. It shopuld become a decent intermediate stage adventurer. I also have to glue it on a base.
Title: Re: Old school adventurers : work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on 30 April 2013, 12:57:14 PM
Here's some progress on customization I made :

On the intermediate halfling, I modified :

the dagger (from elfic dagger to a standard dagger).
the bow (from an elfic short bow to a standard wood bow)
I removed the throwing knives, replacing them with straps and a purse

I also fixed some defects (face, arrows' quiver, shirt).

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300220_zpsb66ea8b6.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300220_zpsb66ea8b6.jpg.html)

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300221_zps99d975ce.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300221_zps99d975ce.jpg.html)

I still need to make the new curly hair.

On the warrior, I started resculpting the axe. I still need to make the other side, and the handle metal binding.

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300217_zps7eac2ef8.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P4300217_zps7eac2ef8.jpg.html)

to be continued, tonight !

The two miniatures I had to fix are completed (the warrior axe still needs a bit of fine sanding).

thanks ! Can't wait to start painting. I think I'll make them by groups of 3, each stage of adventurer.

Now the tuff choice : which adventurer will I start ? Maybe the halfling. I was not that much interesting in that race, but after I saw The Hobbit, it gave me a bit of interest...

We'll see, I'll keep you informed.

Thanks !
This afternoon I primercoated the....halfling ! Too much work on the faulty figure to just keep them into dust waiting for their turn  lol

I'll start painting tommorow. The theory is to paint at least 1 complete adventure (3 stage miniatures) each week end. And during week days, working on my zombies horde.

The goal is to be able to play ATZ and dungeon crawling games (Warrior heroes: legends and maybe goalsystem delves if a solo mode appears) this summer.

Here's some sneak pics of the primered minis, and especially the one I massively fixed and resculpted :

I'm happy with the result, it should take paint very well, and be full of personality like a lot of old school minis.

I also finished the 3stage warrior, fixing and sanding flashes and defects, tommorow I'll primer coat it (so it will be the 2nd hero)

I didn't start painting, but I'm customizing one of my dwarfs NPCs to make the 3rd stage dwarf warrior complete  :D

I'm adding some green stuff details to make the 3rd stage dwarf.

1st stage : small runic iron axe, buckler, leather armor
2nd stage : double common steel axe, wood shield, chainmail armor, fur coat
3rd stage : single large runic steel axe, steel shield, mithril armor, fur coat, steel gauntlets, legs and shoulder pads

I could not resist, since it's the only one hero left with 2 stages only...I'll post pics this afternoon.

In the mean time I'll work on my zombies (I want to be perfectly available for the fantasy heroes).

I wanted to keep him the same "viking" look he had in intermediate stage, but with better gear and some kind of "dignity"...Like a viking dwarf lord :D

I modified the beard and added horns and fur coat to make them more recognizable.

Tommorow : painting  ;)

Love what you did the 3rd stage mods!  :-* he does look much more majestic with the long fur cloak. I like the way you seemingly attach the cloak with the existing shoulder plates.

Can't wait to see the painted pics!

I likes it. Looking good. The only thing i have issue with is the shield. Especially for the viking feel i would have liked to see a big round shield bigger than the middle stage. Would keep the theme straight for the whole progression. Plus the shield is smaller than the 2nd stage. It all looks good and is great for a stand alone. Keep it up and cant wait to see it painted. :-)

Yes, I know for the shield, I was lazy on this and didn't make the conversion. I had another spare dwarf with round shield, but he had it on his back, so I could not make the fur coat. But after all, vikings were known to take weapons from enemies, so we can imagine that dwarf took that gear on a dead enemy...Or simply found it in a treasure room (after all, he's supposed to be a dungeon crawling archetype adventurer).

edit : well done, now I'm thinking about converting the shield too  lol

That is an EXCELLENT bit of conversion; the cloak is IMPRESSIVE, as are the additions to the beard & the horns...I'm actually the most impressed by the cap on the ax. GREAT WORK!

well done, now I'm thinking about converting the shield too  lol

The shield may be a bit on the twinky side, but it could be MAGICAL...if you paint it that way.

Thank you !

Now I'm thinking about 2 possibilities :

Converting the current shield, with sculpted thing on it

removing the typical knight shield and replace it with a round one...

But now  the idea of a "shield issue" is in my head and growing  lol

It's what I like in these old school minis : they are well sculpted, but with enough room for own creativity. The new figures on markets doesn't appeal me that much because of their complexity. Modern minis often (not always hopefully) reminds me late 19th century-early 20th century academic art. Perfection in execution and technic, but often with something hard to define lost in the process.

Vintage minis remind me Goya or the impressionists. Technic (even if it's here with no doubt) is behind the subject and the feeling given to the viewer.

Maybe that comparison sounds weird...  lol But LAF is the forum I think I can share my funny theories  ;D
Title: Re: Old school adventurers : work in progress

I would agree with your theory of more modern minis. There is a  tendency toward being too serious with the newer stuff; as a consequence, while achieving a higher level of perfection/realism, they forfeit the charm & personality of the vintage fantasy pieces. There are, of course, exceptions to this.
I gravitate toward the surrealistic, cartoonish, & strange...disturbingly silly  is the way for moi.

Yes. if yopu wanted to "Go Silly" You could paint a "+1" (or "+3" even) on the shield, establishing it's 'bona fide' magical status.   lol   ::)  :D

I think I've got a good sample of fantasy archetypes  (from left to right) :

human ranger
dwarf fighter (axeman)
human fighter (female, sword)
elve fighter mage
human fighter (axeman, probably can be used as a knight)
human cleric
halfeling thief

I also finished some plastic D&D monsters I started a while ago, for my solo adventures bestiary, I'll make some pics if any interest.

I hope I'll paint the next ones faster. Even if the mini is apparently simple, the tricky thing is to find some "realistic" paint schemes matching the mini style. Some very fine details (like the paded leather armor) are a bit hard to paint too, at least for my tabletop painter skills.

Those three stagers are great! For more old school fun, consider the following suggestions for rookie/experienced/veteran:

Fighter
Veteran/Hero/Superhero

Ranger
Runner/Scout/Pathfinder

Magic-User
Prestidigitator/Theurgist/Warlock
(or, from Basic D&D, Medium/Magician/Sorcerer)

Cleric
Acolyte/Priest/Patriarch
(or, from Basic, Acolyte/Priest/Bishop)

and my favorite, Thief
Rogue/Burglar/Thief

 :)

Title: Re: Old school adventurers : work in progress
Post by: sundayhero on 28 July 2013, 02:22:55 PM
thanks !

Since ral partha old minis are a bit small, I choosed to keep the integrated bases, so once on a plastic base they will blend with other minis I have quite nicely.

I do the opposite on big minis : I remove the bases and base them on thin metal washers. Using this kind of technics, I can use diferent brands of minis together.

By the way, all my projects are still work in progress, they are just very looooooong term projects  lol

I "needed" to paint this one because I just finished my modern infantry project (about 140 20mm figures, I believe), and just started a new 10mm army (so regiment painting again). So to avoid masspainting overdose, I just picked up this adventurer mini, and I'm painting it during about half an hour,  some days.

The mini is completed, here's the pics of it :

In some Heroscape custom nordic tiles (I still have to make some nordic snow trees, now that I found a cheap, sturdy and reasonably good snow technic) :

(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P9280272_zpsb51f9540.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P9280272_zpsb51f9540.jpg.html)
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P9280284_zps5610d940.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P9280284_zps5610d940.jpg.html)(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l8/slotdem/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P9280282_zpse6123dc0.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/slotdem/media/miniature%20heroes%20and%20villains/P9280282_zpse6123dc0.jpg.html)

I have to build these photo light boxes, because with light, the pics are too bright and saturated, without light, the pics are too dark. Even if my hobby lights are pretty good (mix of 2 cold and daylight bulbs).  So the real thing is a bit between the 2 series of photos  lol

This mini has been a good "study" figure. I learned a few new technics (even if they are not perfect) :

"red-ish" carnation, instead of my usual taned skin
snow base

And I also progressed in learned how to paint clothes and uniforms a bit more dark/realistic fantasy (like in games of thrones tv show, or the old Chronopia artworks).
