Hi Lads
SHould Orcs be green or Brown ???? many years ago it was the norm for them to be Brown But since GW (the Dark Empire ) has turned them all green is it some sort of dark magic they use on there figures to keep them green ?
I painted up a 15mm Orc army a few years back ( 10+years ) in the green skin mode ,but now i have seen the true light and started to paint my new units in a Dark Brown and i and happy with the out come will try and put a pic on here some time when i can work it out . :)
so it looks like i am turning full circle with my painting ..
happy gaming LR :)

I Prefer Brown and paint mine that colour, from the early days of Citadel pre slotta orc and goblin army :D
-
i think a mix is nice, green to browny green to brown ;D
-
My LOTR Orcs have grey flesh. This is because they were described by Tolkien in the Silmarillion as being black skinned, but doing them black looked silly!!
If I had to choose between green and brown, I'd choose brown though, unless I could find a really dirty greenish-grey...
-
I like them blueish
(http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q747/Imp522/Goblin%20and%20Orc%20army/BTDorcwarriors_zpsc876e383.jpg) (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/Imp522/media/Goblin%20and%20Orc%20army/BTDorcwarriors_zpsc876e383.jpg.html)
But really paint them the color that's going to make you happy.

A really dingy, dirty, dark green that's almost a brown. Bright green is ridiculous.
-
I did green, but have now gone to brown/khaki due to a change in the fluff of the world I play in where orcs, elves and humans all share a common ancestor so are able to interbreed in the same way as tigers and lions. So 'human flesh' coloured but slightly off is what I went for.

Green for GW games, Buff for anything else!

Hello LawnRanger, I am going to agree with Rob here (though Imp has a really impressive blue horde), I like green for GW and brown for all other gobbos. Here is my Metal Magic Goblin that I painted with a green/brown paint:

I love this paint btw, it is very rich in colour. Let us know what you do, better yet post some pics even if they are WIP.

I am a fan of green, but hadn't really considered anything else to be honest :) Recently I painted an orc and sgtarted with green, the did a watered down wash of Scaly Green (which is more like aqua) just to make it interesting. I like the colour of Damien's orc though... hmm, what a quandary!

I have a couple of old shots of WIPs...

Bad Moon test orks, trying to steer away from the brighter, saturated greens that GW normally uses. I think there's some of the VMC green brown that Damien likes (ditto) in the left one.

Heresy goblins, red and greyish. Like a few here I wanted to try non-GW colour schemes on non-GW minis. IIRC the reds are based on dulled, dusky reds and pinks from Anita's (http://www.synta.com/prod_anitas_acpmcp.html) and Ral Partha's ranges. The grey is based with Citadel ghoul grey. This was already long OOP before I discovered gaming (GW had already moved onto the bolter-shell hex pots) and found a pot of it in an old model shop. It's a bootiful yellowish-brownish grey, but I'm too sparing with it because I don't have a match (maybe Reaper's ghoul skin?) and don't want to use it up too soon! But anyway...
-
I actually would like to paint my ashen-grey given the choice...in fact maybe I will! :)
-
I really don't care for the GW green color for orcs
-
Ruddy to red orcs for me, gentlemen.
those are the colors of RAGE and FURY.
-
@Quendil, where are those orcs from? They look like the orcs from that old 80's Lord of the Rings animation. I really like them a lot, great paint job.

The orcs are from Heritage and are licenced from that 1980's film. I even have the painting guide which tells you the colours (Very cartoony). You can still get the miniatures from here http://www.classicminiatures.net/ (http://www.classicminiatures.net/), not a commercial site just a labour of love. You can contact him on hayha@q.com and he can send you a list of what he has :D
See here for the wiki list http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Lord_of_the_Rings_Figure_Sets (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Lord_of_the_Rings_Figure_Sets)

The majority of my orcs have been painted in a variety of flesh tones; my goblinoids get darker as they get bigger - white for the smallest svarts, through to 'Rotting Flesh' night goblins, to human coloured goblins and orcs and finally dark brown trolls). That said, my LotR orcs still need painting and I am stuck as to what colour to paint them - flesh coloured as per the above scheme, something resembling the movies, or something from the grey scale to match in with the Dragon Warriors' RPG I am currently playing?
-
Damien, I really like the green brown you're using. I see multiple uses for that paint !
thanks for sharing the ref.

Thanks for the info Quendil, I was already thinking of buying some minis off the 'classicminiatures' website after I painted a Heritage Gnome (a lot of fun to paint).
Hi sundayhero, glad to be of assistance.

Any colour that you like. :D
I tried a pale human flesh tone on goblins, and it works ok - as does black.
Incidentally, some very nice stuff here - Lowtardog's browns and Vermis' Moons; the colour on Damien's goblin would be my pick, I'd say.
-
I usually paint them brownish or greyish - apart from Warhammer orcs and gobbos. Haven't painted any in a long time but I basically think that GW created their own look for that world and I am willing to go along with it. The fluff of calling them greenskins and all that makes it so GW typical that I'd find it a shame to ignore it.
Apart from that it's other colors. With an occasional green tinge mixed into a horde.
Btw. love those old Lord of the Rings orcs posted by Quendil. After all that movie got me involved with Tolkien in the first place...

mE TOO :D

Thanks Vanvlak!
I love those old LOTR orcs, I remember seeing that old movie in the 80's and was totally captivated. I never knew these minis even existed. When Quendil posted them I went straight to the Classic miniatures website (www.classicminiatures.net) to get a price list. I have to have these miniatures.
Cheers,
Damien

My guys are mostly green!

I stick with brown or grey as the base color-tones for my orcs.
