My first attempt of airbrushing (I lent the brush and got great assistance by the owner) made me finish a 3ft square piece of a galaxy far, far away to play a lot of X-wing games in the future...

End result after an hour of shooting compressed air around:

And this is what I´ve got after I laid my hands on it with a good old handheld brush:

I can't believe this isn't a photo. I'm left speechless! How long did the whole board take? I imagine you must have invested a fair few hours in it.
Cheers

I, like all the others, are truly impressed with your brush skills!

+1 to all the above
:-*

I was pottering about on the FFG website today and by coincidence noticed they just announced that they are bringing out a "Starfield Game Tile Kit" for their X-Wing game.
I don't think they look as good as this (though they do have a Death Star). :)

Add master of the airbrush to your resume!
Great stuff as always!

Great work mate! :-* :-* :-*

You could market those. Very impressive!

What did you paint on? Wood? MDF? Foam core?

"Space...is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."
I can paint plausible space but it's those objects in it which often prove problematic. :?

Wise words, my friend.

The board is made of 5mm thick MDF, covered with self adhesive black velvet foil.
This provides 3 advantages:
- soft surface does not harm tumbling models
- rough surface prevents models from unwanted slipping when table/board is shaking
- black surface IS black, because no light is reflected
-
Wow, most impressive! :o Really good work! :-*
-
Now that you have used the airbrush, are you hooked? You did a fantastic job, but please tell me where you find self adhesive black velvet foil, I dont even know what that is. ???
-
Seriously impressive, Michi!
:-*
I had a few games of this last week on Panzerfaust65's board last week.
He has done something similar, but I dont think he went to town to the same extent.
It did look damn impressive, though.
Even more impressive was when he flipped the board over and had the Death Star on the other side, created from lots of small panels of 6mm foam.
It was really well done.
I must badger hm for photos...
There you go, Michi: A challenge to do the other side!
;)

Yo will hardly believe it, but I did exactly that. Only difference is that my death star is not made of foam but photos...

That is a great board! I bought the GF9 one. Years ago, I did a Battlefleet Gothic board set and used lexan, painted from behind, with an airbrush, spattering, and then sprayed black - had to think in reverse order. The clear of the lexan made for a bit of depth.
-
For your next black velvet trick, you can do a playing mat with the famous Elvis Nebula on it! ;)
Seriously, that looks great!
