Did 18th Century Ronin train against wooden practice dummies?
Coz if so he would be perfect for that role.

actually, he was training against a big black guy. And it was hard to find in the 18th century japan.

God this looks terrible, I still want to see it though as it has my all time favourite actor in it, Tadanobu Asano. I even watched Battleship cause he was in it, and it can't be worse then Battleship, right? ;)

Looks like its gone all 300 or Sincity :'(

I dunno, it looks like it could be to samurai what 300 was to hoplites... and stupid as 300 was, it was enjoyable.
Personally, I'd be a lot more concerned if Keanu Reeves was in it and they attempted to play it straight.
For anyone after a more serious samurai film, the re-imagining of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven got a trailer recently:

I like a good historical drama. I enjoyed Keanu's last such foray, 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure'.

Unforgiven with katanas? where I must sign for it?
that trailer looks much better than "Neo vs the tattoed samurai"

And I present to you for your perusal the long awaited trailer

A good way to put it; If I can enjoy 300 for what it was, I guess I could enjoy 47 Ronin, too.
I look forward to Japanese Unforgiven!

Oh, for the love of...*sigh* yeah. Yeah, I'll be seeing it. Damn it.

Yep me too lol

I was really against this movie as I have read a lot about the actual 47 Ronin both truth and folklore, but having seen the trailer i will go see it, with a view that I am watching a Japanese fantasy movie. Time to switch the brain off, but even then I am pretty sure I will come out fuming, expect a rant from me on here in a few month's time >:D
-
Wow, didn't Stephen Turnbull work in this film?
-That's wrong, a samurai would hold his sword this way.
-To kill a dragon?
-Umm, yeah.
-
Yeah, he was the historical advisor. We commissioned him to do the RAID title on the 47 Ronin, then later that week he was approached to work on the movie. I'm not saying Osprey had a hand in that, but... ;D
-
After seeing the trailer I am left feeling quite ill. I guess I was hoping for something else...not a sword and sorcery fantasy movie. Since they are going off into the realm of goofyness, perhaps they could have hired Tom Cruise to be the hero's dwarf sidekick (after all, he learned sword-play for The Last Samurai). >:(
-
Just seen the trailer and was rather disappointed to see that Hiroyuki Sanada is in it :'(
I suppose if I can forget the title then it might just be watchable :?
cheers

I've changed my mind, It looks great 8)

Looks daft, but alright for a drunken night on DVD.
-
Aaaargh, I have just seen the trailer and it looks awful.
The gai-jin saves the day, eh? Why have they let Reeves go off his medication again?
I'll enjoy posting a review or seventy on Rotten tomatoes and IMDB.
-
The gai-jin saves the day, eh?
It's a long standing movie tradition that a washed out white man, preferrably with a drinking problem, who trains for a couple of days/weeks will surpass any samurai who was bred for it and trained all his life. Just common sense, really.
-
Ooh, ooh, don't forget the troubled past and/or heavy conscience!
Can't be White-man-who-saves-the-world without it...
-
Doi detect a touch of cynicism here :D
-

yeah the cast is surprisingly good, with some decent actors, shame they had to shoehorn keannu in it, or is this secretly Bill and Ted 3? in which case it all makes sense and I forgive him immediatly ;)
-

Maybe a bit of resentful disappointment. ;)
I am rather curious about the movie though. I intend to ignore the name completely and just watch it as a fantasy flick.
-
If you dare, you can have a look at the 1962 movie. I say 'dare' as it's three and a half hours long. Of course there is sloooow action (except for the final battle, which it's totally cool) and lots of Japanese introspection and debate about duty and honour. (I believe there is even a previous movie shot in 1941).
I don't know why they keep the same title, don't really think it can be taken for a remake, nor the movie or the original story. Maybe another kind of approach would be more successful.
-
Hmmm what next....
Keanu as an Edo period law enforcement officer...
"Watashi wa shin sen kumi no ējento"
-
Not to fond of Mr Reeves either. However, it was the first serious 1/35 scale modelkit that i did sp i might watch it, at some later date and for only that reason and curiosity.

The 47 Ronin story has a similar cultural echo to the OK Corral in the US or Ned Kelly in Australia. Everyone in Japan knows the story and just wants to see that generation's interpretation. Sadly, this generation's version has been corrupted by manga and short attention spans.
I have copies of of Mizoguchi's 1940s version and Inagaki's 1960s version. It's really useful to look at them as cultural mirrors of their times. I much prefer Mizoguchi.
-
well i seem to be the only one who is looking forward to watching this, i go into a movie expecting nothing but to escape reality and have something resembling a plot....
-
I think it could be a fun movie, the only reason they're getting so much preemptive flak is that the title made people expect something it's not.

Yeah, funny how slapping the name of an established story on a movie will make people expect something resembling it. ;D
I've thought it a few times: "I dunno what that was, but they shouldn't have called it X 'cos it ain't that!"
-
I agree they only have themselves to blame. They were trying to cash in on an established subject while doing their own thing and it backfired.
This being said, how many young people really know there is something else called "47 ronin" out there? Or give a fuck?

maybe not in the west but I'd guess it's a pretty well known story in Japan, and even in the west it's not completly unknown, Dark Horse had a comic about it penciled by Stan Sakai that just finished a few months ago

Is it good?

Is it good?
I loved it, but I'm a fan of Stan's work in General, although it took a while getting used to seeing him do humans instead of bunnies ;)
But yeah it's quite good, and it even had Kazuo Koike serving as a consultant
-
Humans? Nuts!
I like SS and KK a lot, so I'll order it as soon as it gets collected as a book. Thanks!
-

No I'm with you. I'll enjoy it for what it is and nothing more. I've always liked the idea of a Japanese Fantasy setting. I enjoy documentaries but I also enjoy highly stylized versions of stories as well. With that said, I understand peoples' frustration with how "loose" this adaptation appears to be. The creators of this movie had to expect that, but I'm sure they know who their target audience is and it's probably not grumpy historical gamers :P
-
As a person who spent a while in the theatre world, I always enjoy the occasionally outrageous popcorn-n-soda flick where I don't have to worry about anything remotely deep in the film.
I'll also go out on a limb here and say that the long hair etc. actually fits Keanu better than his normal guise.
I'll watch this movie - likely on DVD. I'm not casting any judgement just yet. Keanu is not a good actor, but he's such a stone-faced blank slate sometimes, that an excellent movie can occur around him without you being distracted by his presence. That's a rare gift. lol
-
People always do this in games and movies. Take established name and tack it onto something completely different in order to cash in on a loved name or franchise. Its a shame because it often makes people dislike the movie because it wasn't what they expected.
