Title: Quick and easy plank fencing
Post by: jp1885 on 19 April 2013, 10:29:57 AM
A couple of weeks ago I made a chance discovery whist emptying our document shredder. My wife likes to laminate our National Trust membership cards in order to make them a little tougher, and, as we’d just received our new cards, had put the old one in the shredder.

I discovered the semi-shredded remains of this card, heavily scored, but still held together by the laminate, and thought, as only wargamers/model makers do, ‘I could use that…’

So I cut the card in half, glued some thin plastic strips horizontally onto each half, added some bits of sprue and hey presto! A couple of plank fences made without the hassle of having to glue individual planks onto a frame!

Very nice.

But not that quick and easy if I first have to get a National Trust membership and wait for it to expire.. ;)

I may be making a few trips to the shredder myself over the next few days.

lol is there not a Danish National Trust?  ;)

Thanks for your feedback folks - time to experiment with anything else I can find that's laminated... :D

The results of some further experimentation - running some credit cards through the shredder to produce roughly uniform size planks, which were then glued onto bits of sprue.

Only a wargamer would look at what everyone else would throw out as rubbish and say 'I could use that!'  lol

And only other wargamers would look to shred stuff just to see what they could make! Brilliant!

I see I am not the only one to stumble upon this. I have been using my shredder to cut 1/4" strips of card stock to make shingles and floor / wall planks. I cannot tell you what a time saver it is, as I used to cut them all out by hand.

Don't think my poor little shredder would cut anything that thick though. May be time for an upgrade. It would be darn handy to cut some thicker material.
