After yesterday's first game with the new LotHS rule set - which, surpisingly enough, I've won - I'd like to introduce my Marina Real troops to you. This forum's members did much to inspire me, and although my efforts cannot compete against other miniatures shown here, it's maybe giving something in return. :)
Afore, the models are mainly from the Perries' ECW range as I wanted some historical Buccaneer-Tortuga flair. I've got also some Marlburians for the later period which will be painted soon.
First shot, on the right: Don Diego Álvarez de Marajon, honorable capitán de la Marina Real, fought off a French raiding party and killed their captain in a bloody duel. Courageous man and now a master of swordplay. To his right, the escudero Juan Avilar (=lieutenant), killed the French quartermaster (=midshipman).

Second one: Don Diego's "sea wolves", the Spanish marines. Three became heavily injured, of which two died. But they'll return another day as reincarnations.

Last but not least, my single Able Seaman called Leopold. A convinced Catholic he joined the Spanish after the end of the Thirty Years' War, so he could go on dashing some Protestants' brains out (or anyone's his masters called 'Protestant'). Here he's surrounded by the markers I've built for our first game (special thanks to Tim Kulinski for inspiration!) and an old Mordheim treasure chest we've used, too.

Besides, I'm very disappointed by Vallejo's matt varnish. They seem to have changed the composition as it's way to glossy. Thus sorry for the shiny miniatures, it will be corrected.

its fine the varnish, i very much like the finish, i love that seaman (his trousers are brilliant) brilliant highlighting and i lobve the markers 2.

Man, thos e Marines mean business, very swarthy looking sea dogs! :)
-
They look very fine! :)

Have u looked at ur miniatures closely :?: - cos theyre stunning
Please keep posting pics 8)

Cool idea for the event/objective markers! I may have to steal that...
-
Lovely figures - they deserve to win all their battles :)
I particularly like Don Diego. Fine shading, especially the red of his sash & the helmet details are also well done.
Those markers are fantastic - please let us know how you did them! I was tempted to use Pardulon's skull piles as markers, but I do like the look of yours.
I'll still be getting some skulls, though, as Jens does make some great scenic accessories and they are ideal for all manner of games.

Thanks for the nice replies! You're all too kind, I'm turning red.
The markers were, as said, originally Tim Kulinski's idea and I plundered it myself. They are made of some old GW skeleton sprues. The crossed bones and the one in the right foreground were shield emblems.
Today I've received a vessel from Games of War (the one with the lateen sail) - and it's REALLY nice, especially considering the low cost of that item. I'll paint it up as soon as possible. And maybe there's a nice boat action next time. The French deserve some Toledo steel me thinks...

Great - with the release of the new GW skellies, there are bound to be loads of the older, cruder version available cheap on E-bay. :D
I've a fancy to do an old dungeon/treasure cave, with loads of old weapons & bits of skeletons lying around. It would make a great place for the finale of a Pirating quest.

Beautiful, beautiful work, Doc!
-
Great! Love those markers too. Will have to try some of those. Now I wish I'd kept my old GW skeletons...

Following his victory over the French, recently Don Diego was received in audience by the admiralty in Santo Domingo. In recognition of his valuable success (besides being long waitlisted) Don Diego was granted command of a new ship. Thus I can now proudly present, La Bella Cucaracha, navío del su admirabilísimo Majestad Don Felipe IV:

A closer look to the interior. As you can see, Don Diego is still waiting for supply of guns - damn those harbour master!

As said before I've purchased a vessel from Games of War and I'm very pleased how it turned out. I've added a shortened sail, some rigging (nothing serious, I'm new to these things) and, finally, some flags bearing the Burgundian cross. The latter are removable, so I could use the same ship for other crews - which are already on my painting desk. :D
Maybe I'll add some details, such as fancywork, later.
But now, time for some counter raids on the French... :x
PS: C&C are very welcome, as always!
-
Yes, that's a trim little barque. Nice paintwork.
Will definitely have to get one of those to complement my bigger ships...
-
Excellent stuff, very nicely painted figures and a smashing looking vessel :)
-
Lovely model!
I think you've added just enough rigging to it. Use too much and you struggle to move the figures around, but what you've done is to provide enough to enhance the model, but still be easy to game with 8)
-
I'm very happy you like my humble work. :)
Since I like the look of it, I'll probably add some shrouds. Maybe this could go along with purchasing a crow's nest. Actually, that could become the way of adding details: crew and ship have to prove their value in battle first, and only then the quartermaster shall be allowed to give out new decorative stuff. Kind of book keeping with models...
PS: Lately I snipped off the overlaying strings of the sail, so don't be disturbed by the picture.

Doc,
Nice work there, glad my insperation helped you out there, keep up the great work!

The idea of the markers is fantastic 8) Think i´m going to do the same :P
The paintjob on the models looks great and i like the colour sheme.
Good work! :)
-
A damn fine looking crew and a beautiful ship!
Are the markers used for fallen pirates?
I was also wondering if Don Diego ever received his guns and if so could we have another pic of his ship all decked out - PLEASE?
-
Nice, compact little vessel! Don't you just hate it when the crew track sand and grass all over the decks, though? lol
-
@fsultana: The markers are used for the LotHS scenario "X marks the spot" - think it's self-explanatory. ;)
Besides, Don Diego is still cruising the Main without his guns. Like all Spaniards he's relying on the close combat skills of his men. An update will follow as soon as possible.
@archangel1: Better to have sand aboard than the crew tearing off the deck with planks tacked to their feet. :D
