Title: Empress modern British 28mm
Post by: Ash on 26 April 2013, 04:52:03 PM
Not painted any minis other than 40k until I came across Empress miniatures at Salute a couple of years ago. I picked up a couple of packs of their modern British Infantry, an insane level of detail, even down to Nexus clips on pouches; you can practically see the stitching on the uniforms!
I finally dug them out of my bits box about a year ago and had a go at Multi Terrain Pattern camouflage. I think the overall result is a bit on the dark side, probably closer to the colours it would go after a good soaking. They were great fun to do and I picked up another couple of packs at Salute '13, including the downed pilots, one of whom will no doubt end up with Ginger'ish hair. Hopefully the next batch will end up lighter . . .

Thanks Earther, glad you like them.
 I just realised I posted the 'not quite done' pictures. I went back and added more green, these were the finished pics. Still lacking that sun bleached look, I suppose a light dry brush all over with a light khaki might sort them out, I'll see how the next lot turn out and maybe tweak them a bit:

Colours used were all Vallejo: Dark sand, Buff, Russian Uniform, English Uniform, Reflective green, German Cam. Black/Brown + flesh tones.

Brilliant!!
Absolutely spot on m8, I've always found MCU (is it MCU?? I can't remember) to be a total pain in the behind to do, I've been trying to do my 20mm Brits/U.S in it for ages and I can honestly say its a killer.

Extremely well done.

Thanks for all the great feedback & kind comments, much appreciated.

These are the ones I picked up at Salute, hopefully get started on them soon.

Re the yellow ballistic glasses; they were a bit of a fluke.
There was some over brushing from the skin tones that I was just going to paint over but first tried painting on a layer of old Citadel Yellow ink ( that has sat there unused since the early '90's!). Looked OK, three layers and a coat of gloss later they looked like this:

(http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r89/Ash-1_photos/Modern%20NATO%20ISAF/BritMTPSquadA2A.jpg)(http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r89/Ash-1_photos/Modern%20NATO%20ISAF/BritMTPSquadA7A.jpg)

I'm quite happy with the result, as I had no idea what else to use other than maybe some Tamiya clear.

Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated.

Nearly done with the 28mm Empress modern British blokes I picked up at Salute.
I generally find once I think I've finished and taken some pictures, that I spot something I missed. So I thought I'd take some prior to finishing that way I'll spot things sooner . . . that's the theory anyway.

I also think these look a bit better than the first group, not sure what I did differently, possibly more of the lighter areas. I also used a picture of Multicam as a guide so it could be that, as I think MTP is more green;

(https://i.ibb.co/SVHSxPQ/multicam.jpg)

Colours I used were all Vallejo (apart from the primer which was Halford's matt black);
 Dark sand, Russian uniform, English uniform, Khaki, Military green, German cam.black/brown & Buff.
+ skin tones; Flat flesh & Pale flesh.

Thanks for the recipe mate. The next question is...you get that stunning blend of colors with a brush, or an airbrush?

These blokes are all brush. Not yet gone down the airbrush route, I've thought about it for tanks etc, but so far it's just on a wish list. Could you use one for things this size?

Y usually use the airbrush to paint ropes, in general. Many times I've been tempted to use for the "greenish" spots of the multicam camo, but never decided to use. Your multicam is really great blended, for that reason I mentioned the AB. Your style is crazy.

A detailed tutorial with the multicam would be awesome, and surely it will become very popular over the forums to paint military figures of any size.

That's great! Did you ever try another camo pattern?
Title: Re: Empress modern British 28mm
Post by: Ash on 04 June 2013, 11:28:56 AM
I've tried a few different patterns on a lot of 40K models, mainly US 3-colour desert and Multicam on IG and Lizard pattern on Chaos renegades, plus a few Soviet patterns on my 20mm bush wars stuff, as well as the Rhodesian. Great thing about guerrilla insurgent models is they can all be wearing something different.

I had a go at Belgian pattern 56 (think that's what it's know as, looks a bit like WW2 denison smock camo) on some 5 Commando ANC figures & a couple of different patterns on some 20mm Executive Outcomes models. I'm also slowly collecting some figures to make up a little Wild Geese team, so will have a go at DPM.

Cheers chap, thanks for all the feedback. Having now had a go at 20mm Multicam, I think I'll stick to 28mm.
Looking at the size comparison it looks as though they are wearing uniforms cut from the same scale cloth.

There are some nice new additions to the Empress range, so I'll probably just get those, then save 20mm for my Bush wars stuff, the vehicles are a lot less expensive at that scale.
