Title: 20mm modern mercenaries
Post by: Ash on 02 May 2013, 10:35:15 PM
This is the start of a little project based on Executive Outcomes PMC, from the mid 1990's. I've read a few books about them and when Under Fire brought out the generic militia packs I thought I'd have a go. No force organisation to speak of, just collecting minis that look the part. I've had a go at adding SADF recce webbing to a couple. The camo is supposed to look like the Angolan army type, with a few bits of the Cuban grey lizard pattern. I've got a 1/72 scale Mi-8, still boxed (which looks huge) and am on the hunt for a couple of BMP-2.

Very nice camo and highlights. I don't paint 20mm, but the extra depth you can get with foilage (which I use for 28mm) really makes the miniatures look they're "in" the terrain.

It's always fun to see what people do with the packs they buy from me. I'll be looking forward to seeing those conversions painted.

Outstanding work. I already struggled with headswaps for the 20mm figures, so it's quite impressive to see matching sculptwork.

Cheers for the feedback chaps. I'm rather chuffed with the head swaps, they now fit in rather well with the militia blokes. Although as I chopped most of the head swaps from a pack of RLI troopies, they all look very European, so will probably get painted that way. I probably should have gone with a pack of ZANLA.
That said the RLI bodies now have a new look as well . . .

Cheers chaps, I may add more if I find something suitable. I do have an MI-8 (still boxed) to chuck into the mix.

Here's one of the BMP-2s:

That's a great book, have a hunt for Executive Outcomes: Against All Odds by Eeben Barlow.

I still have an Mi-8 and some more troops to go with this project, but as it's 1990's I'm not sure if it's still ok to post stuff...?

Going to try and finish off this project, had the Mi-8 languishing for a while, but just bagged the Hind on eBay.
Will try to get them done at the same time.  I'm going to try to use magnets for the rotors to aid storage, could be messy...

Fantastic work ....the overall effect with the paintwork and basing is spot on. I just ordered some RLI and a few generic militia to see what they paint up like. Really useful and really interesting post.

Ash, you could either leave off the rotors all together or pin a couple of the blades so transport and storage becomes easier? Complete rotorsets are so damn fragile.

I think effectively it'll be rotors off. I do want to make up the rotor assembly, then implant some little magnets, for some hypothetical moment when I want them on. For some reason everything I've made with rotors so far sets my daughter's cat off, the ensuing destruction tends to cause sense of humour failure...

Here's one I did earlier.

Yup, thats how I do the props on my propellor aircraft as well. Small helos are not a problem, but bigger ones might be. (Hip sized)

Have you considered the 1/72 Easy Model kits?  Reasonably priced, pre-painted and wonderful little plastics they are.  Easy to repaint I'd imagine, and I'd guess you could break-off/re-magnetize the rotors as well.

Some really nice kits out there, maybe not as cheap as some model kits, but really wonderful plastics.

@ Sundayhero: Thanks

@ Gunbird: I'm thinking make up the rotor assembly, then possibly slicing the whole thing off with a razor saw and inserting a couple of fat magnets to stick it back on... eBay has some fairly hefty ones. Will have to get an assortment.

@ Elbows:  Not seen those before, they look fairly solid and almost cat proof! Thanks for posting.

For anyone interested this is their site showing off their kits...mostly (90%) aircraft kits, but really solid pre-built stuff.  Looks like helicopter rotors come separate.  I have friends who use them for WW2 air support on stands etc.  Made by MRC/Easy Model.

Normally go for reasonable prices but occasionally re-sellers sell them at obscene levels.  I'd think the helo's (being bigger models) may be a bit more expensive.  I picked up a couple of Mi-8s for my father a few years back but can't remember how much they were.

^Huge listing.

They also have at least one or two Mi-4's...and waaaaay more armor than I'd previously thought.

Easy model helis are fantastic tricky to open up and add crews but it is doable.
