Title: Giant toad miniature or other funny mount?
Post by: beefcake on May 03, 2013, 07:04:59 AM
Can anyone point me in the direction of a giant toad?
The ones I've seen so far are otherworld, but they are a bit expensive, megaminis, and tengu, but I'm looking for something a bit more demonic/evil looking, the heresy demonic tod is too small however, I want it to mount a smallish goblinish miniature with a saddle about 10mm across.
Or if you can think of any other funny mount for a goblin/gnome (not 100% sure what it is really) steer me that way
Thanks.

Forge World makes a couple of demonic toads:

A couple of interesting options there. That moon beast is quite cool. The plague toads are a bit expensive though and I only need one. I also looked up other moon beast minis and there's another that might be an interesting alternative. Still interested in hearing other edge as as ll if anyone else has any.

Not demonic looking, but large are the ones from Eureka Miniatures:

Any other ideas, I'm pretty much planning on using the silliest thing, within reason, and as long as its cheap.

Worm?

Never seen one in the flesh... lead... whatever... but visually interesting.  Unsure of size.

Gracias,

Glenn

Edit: Khurasan has wooly rhinos and seals (8 mm penguins ride them) and http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/pla1.jpg Escargon.

Thanks Glenn.
I think I found what I'm after. It's kind of toad like a bit comical and very evil looking.
A leaping mawe (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=leaping-mawe~hfsa308&category=miniatures~sci%252dfi-aliens) from hasslefree. I may be getting a few more of these some time as well.

Silliest thing? You can't go past Thunderbolt Mountain's Noraland, Savage and Sparkle and Theoland ranges:

GRENDEL offer these

It's easy to switch the rider, when you have a dremel/proxxon and a bit of green stuff.

I once mounted a night goblin shaman on a stag beetle. The beetle was a multipart metal figure... if I remember correctly it was originally kind of a transport unit from the Demonworld 15mm range, not shure if you can get this anymore.

Yes, that's it!
A normal goblin fits very well on it. For bigger riders it's maybe not "monstrous" enough. Maybe I can make a comparison picture if somebody needs it.

Those are cool. The mawe beast was a lot cheaper though. But I may put that stag beetle on my wish list. I need lots of stuff from ral partha europe now.

If you are still interested in frog / toad figures, then Reaper may be the way to go:

The larger end include the demon figure (https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/frog/latest/02684#detail/02684_p_1_kw):

Down to the smaller Ice Toads (https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/frog/latest/03464#detail/03464_w_1) (one of my fave figs):

or with Gnome Druid (https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/frog/latest/03226#detail/03226_gnome_front_rc) (possible head swap?)

For a complete list have a look at Reaper Frogs (https://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Frog) - the smaller frog men may be the only ones to take the small saddle though!

Hi Beefcake, I sincerely recommend the cane toad from the "Venomous Toob" pack of replica animals by Safari. It is pretty gribbly as is with extremely warty skin. It's also big but not too big. It can fit on a 40mm round base with it's fingers overlapping the edge or comfortably on a 50mm base, as is 33mm to the eyes and 50mm long. If you want it more demonic, just break out the green stuff. The other creatures in the toob are also great. For less than the price of a metal giant toad you get 9 big monsters. Trust me, I'm a snob for quality and these are better than a lot of metal sculpts out there, and the casting quality and material quality is there. Feel free to send me any you don't want as thanks, especially the scorpion. ;)

Some of those look really cool. Not sure I could find a use for the fish unless it was some crazy spell effect: giant poisonous fish of doom that will kill by squashing and venom spell.
The spider, scorpion, centipede and frog would be the only interest though.

Think "Land Lobster" locomotion - the powerful tail - and fins for "guidance" in flight - propels it through the air in jumps and leaps.
