I've just painted the base color (white) then use a blister's foam to apply red-brown color, removing the excess paint, from the foam, on a piece of cardboard before.
The actual color on the shield is kind of red-brown in the middle, with a lighter shade of red outside the pattern… the idea was to look like dried blood… not that it show with my very poor photography skills ;)

actually that is the first time, that I think this foam-technique is used for the right thing. I heard and saw it used for blood on miniatures ... but that seldom suits me ... on this shields though it looks good.

Uncle Mike, did you use a type of "dip" method for the cultist? If so, I absolutely love it and will employ in the future.

Hey Chambers,
I did dip them...in all honesty every entry this year has been dipped. I've been using the stuff for this last year (with varying results...) to try and get a finish that I am happy with. It does save a lot of time and gives an extra layer of protection as well. Great stuff!
