Title: Steam powered Mechanical horses
Post by: Malamute on April 24, 2008, 12:08:18 PM
Inspired by an idea thought up by my good friend Thunderchicken we are now sourcing steam powered mechanical horses to provide mounts for our cavalry.
I am aware of a Wizkids Mage Knight mechanical  horse. Before buying some of these does anyone have any other suggestions for mechanical steeds :?:

Dare I say it, "ye company that shall not be named" does one as part of their Fantasy Empire range. Steed for a technicus. Rather more renaissance than VSF, but I recall seeing one in Imperial Russian livery and thought it looked rather nice.

Apart from that, I had thought of a similar approach for my Weird West steam army, using those little two-legged Cryx Warjacks. Cannot recall their names, but they would look positively weird.

They also do a "chaos" version. An old one has been available for ages, but there is a new version out soon. The price is, of course OTT!

However, have you thought about using some of their plastic WH horses?

They are a lot bigger than normal 28mm nags, which to my way of thinking would be an advantage with steam steeds. Being hard plastic, you could very easily add rivets, steel plating, remove mane, tails etc to get a nice "mechanical" look to them. There's a choice of unarmoured, "gothic-renaissance" style armour, or fabric caparison.

They can be got relatively cheaply on Ebay.....

This horse look like clockwory rather than steam and is a nice model. I have converted one for a hero/leader figure for my VSF Russians:

Yes, that is quite a nice idea which I have floating around my mind for some time for my own steam-horsed cavalry, but the problem is you'd need some numbers. And there's a looong way to go to get something like that:

So, where are you, manufacturers of all things lead: a steam horse we need!

I once saw some of these converted up into clockwork/mechanical steeds with the addition of wooden wheels, etc.  They looked pretty good.  I suspect the picture was in an older copy of White Dwarf.  If you post a question into a forum more concerned with GW, you might be able to score some pictures for reference.

Last I talked to Bob Charrette from Parroom Station he was working on a set of VSF mechanified horses.  He was hating doing all the machined stuff, but was proceeding nicely with it nonetheless.  I don't know if he's still working on them, though.

That would be terriffic news if he does release some. Its been very quiet on the Parroom Station front for ages it seems. Fingers crossed we see some releases soon.  :)
