Title: KGN1940 Battle for Stonne 1/300 NEW PICTURES 26/05
Post by: robh on 19 May 2013, 02:01:21 PM
Couple of images of the table from our 6mm game of Kampfgruppe Normandy 1940 expansion.  (Being KGN diehards who have not seen a need to switch to the Battlegroup series).

Not many pictures from me as I am trying to work out how to get my tab to take decent pictures in lieu of a digital camera.  Battle was a historical scenario for the French heavy armour counter attack against the positions in Stonne of IR Grossdeutschland.

This was the objective of the French, German defenders deployed hidden, Infantry with MMG and multiple 37mm AT gun support and observers for off table artillery.

Overall table looked like this, (but with the French deployment/entry zones to the left....which I totally failed to get in the picture frame  :-[ )

You can just see the 2nd squadron of French Char B1 tanks at the extreme left passing the burning wrecks of the first which died under a hail of heavy artillery as soon as they came in LOS of the hidden German observers (revealed in the first orchard on the hilltop)

Other players took more pictures for the club blogsite so hopefully I will be able to post a link later on.

Ended with a crushing French defeat as the supporting infantry battered by heavy artillery and Stuka attacks failed to gain a foothold in the village before their morale collapsed.

Good stuff. One in the eye for all those who said KGN is dead.

Good stuff. One in the eye for all those who said KGN is dead.

KGN is a superb set of rules and will always give a good game. There were a few unofficial expansions done for it (Pacific, Desert War and 1940) and I have worked out stats for others so we can game pretty much any theatre with it now.

I bought Battlegroup Kursk and it has some nice touches but I cannot say it is an improvement over the KGN mechanics. Certainly nothing that makes me want to invest the amount of ££ in it necessary to cover the same ground I can already with KGN.

In your opinion Rob...  ;)

I happen to think the changes make it a better game, but to each their own.

Glad to see my supplements going to good use, I was rather pleased with how KG1940 turned out!  :D Im writing Battlegroup Blitzkreig at the moment...

As an author of the Battlegroup series I should hope you do!  :D

The 1940 expansion is superb, we have had a dozen or so wonderful games with it....my French don't win many though :'(

More (and much better) pictures of the 1940 Stonne scenario on our club site now, and a brief video with an overview of the entire table.

The periscope was not used during the game!  We used to use them many years ago playing the old TTG "Firefly" rules. Just brought it along to aid discussion of why the KGN/Battlegroup tactic of sniping observers and HQs with 155mm howitzers is a bit "gamey".
