Title: Non-Zombie Post APOC rules/games
Post by: Conquistador on May 26, 2013, 11:14:43 PM
I know Zombies are very popular (just not with me)  :o  but it struck me that any interest I have in post APOC gaming would be a "less fantasy" (seems better than "more realistic"  ::) to some) oriented.  Yes, I know mutants are almost as fantastic as reanimated dead people but, hey, it's my line and that is where I draw it.    lol

Anyway, what rules for  "post apoc" gaming that either don't address zombies or, at the very least, don't treat them as integral to the game?   ???

I am thinking of other uses for my Pueblo buildings.  I just don't like that whole reanimated dead thing.

Gracias,

Glenn

I will probably get ribbed for this suggestion but, take a look at the old GW game "Inquisitor". Away from the background fluff they are an excellent set of generic skirmish rules, good characterisation and very easy to mod weapons and abilities for (the stock lists are already very extensive).

Still a free download.

Designed at small squad/gang level for narrative or rpg lite games.  Dependent on having a game with a good story and objectives, absolutely not for points based throw downs.

That funny feeling that just passed through your body is a "disturbance in the Force" as I am actually downloading some from GW/EE for consideration...

Second sign of the Apocalypse...

We will see...

I don't like zombies myself and am glad I'm not the only one on this board. Games Workshop's Dark Future had some skirmish rules plugin in a WD article (contained in the specialist games PDF) and I do not remember any zombies in there.

I second Wastelands 3, or if you want something simpler, Warlords of the wastes 2085 (skank game).

Wastelands has everything...great campaign rules, reasonable complexity without burdensome bookkeeping...the only downside is that the organization of the rulebook is completely mindboggling.  Best to start with the campaign rules at the end and then learn the system's specifics as squadbuilding is at the end of the book.

What about Scavenge Skirmish Survive in this here section of the forum?

Rules are free in the download section and will do everything you want. Ignore the snow setting if you like and use them in a dry arid Wasteland alas the road. Check out the figs too a nice bunch of desperate scavengers

When we ran "Mad Madge: Beyond the Millennium Dome" back at Salute.... something a while ago we used Killzone

The specific rules files are here (http://www.frothersunite.com/files/the_crypt/files/killzone_reference.pdf) and the supplements are here (http://www.frothersunite.com/files/the_crypt/files/killzone_extra.pdf).

It was a blast and (i think) almost totally zombie free... tho we did end up with some pubic lice of doom in one war band

Mutants and Death Ray guns is pretty fun but it's also pretty simple. After the Horsemen is pretty good too, but it's got too many tables...a little too much. Babylon's Burning has the best rulebook ever, but the game has SO MUCH upkeep, although it is as close to a battle simulation (no mutants, no zombies, no plasma rifles, either) as you're going to get - my only beef with that game is that there's a little too much upkeep and too many tables.

I'm 7 games into a multiplayer campaign and it's got pretty much everything I want in a game. The only thing really missing is rules for more advanced weapons...I'm considering porting over things from the Fallout world to make this a Fallout-themed game that doesn't suck.

Really, I think that any PA rules set would work fine, just by removing the "fantasy" elements.  However, look at Two Hour Wargames "After the Horsemen", ROG Now's "Babylon's Burning"  for reasonably "realistic" PA settings.  Maybe even modify Old West rules?

I second for After The Horseman from 2HW.

I´m in the middle of a solo campaign and it is totally amazing (you can play it versus or cooperatively as well). Focused on post apoc human relations and their struggle to survive for another day. Sure you can add zombies or mutants but I believe that monsters don´t change the fact that in a Post apoc world resources are ominously scarce and that alone is as dangerous and lethal as any mutant-radioactive-zombie adversary, so in my campaign only humans and they can be bad enough...
