Anyone looking for ideas for a journal and accompanying pictures might want to have a look at Joshua Mowll's The Guild Trilogy, but look for the hardbacks.

The Guild of Specialists trilogy is a series of novels by children's author Joshua Mowll, published by Walker Books. The series follows the lives of Rebecca and Douglas MacKenzie in their quest to find their parents after they had gone missing on an expedition to the Sinkiang desert in China. They meet up with their uncle, Captain Fitzroy MacKenzie and he welcomes them onto his boat, the Expedient. They stumble upon the Guild of Specialists, a secret society of which their uncle is a part, as they embark upon their journey. Slowly, they begin to uncover the secrets of the Guild and begin to wonder what their parents had been looking for in the Sinkiang desert.
Aimed at a younger audience are the Charlie Small stories.

I agree; these books are pulpishly inspirational. Love all the pull-outs and charts and illustrations. Good, young adult stories too. Perfect for us old duffers who are looking for entertainment. Unique and reasonably priced to boot. What more could you want?

I got the first book, (red jericho?) as literacy, well, as you said is really aiming to very young readers.
In terms of publishing its a excellent job, good paper, nice printing, lots of cool art, maps, pulpish printed memorabilia.
While reading it I got the feeling to be reading the tale of a homebrew rpg campaing with all their handouts
Juts a few images from google

I have a feeling that they have a ordinary paperback version, make sure you get the Journal Book version.

As I said, get the hardback with the band across the front.....

I found the 3 hardbacks as a set on Amazon last week - arrived on Saturday, have read the first one already. I thought it was pretty good.
