Title: Any suggestions on a ruleset?
Post by: richarDISNEY on July 03, 2013, 04:16:25 PM
Just coming out of seeing The Lone Ranger, I have decided top 'dust off' my old western stuff and try to game some of those scenes.

BUT...

I need a ruleset.
I am familiar with LotOW and Gutshot (neither to my liking), Gunfight! and Savage Worlds.
But I am looking for something 'different'.

28mm and needs to be Hollywood style of action.
Fast and fun is what I am lookin' fer.

Any suggestions?
What would you recommend and why?

Thanks!

Rules with no names always provides us with lots of fun and there were scenarios done a while ago in wargames illustrated to plat all the popular westerns rio bravo ,magnificent 7 etc. Movement by card deck which keeps the tension up well worth a look , weve gamed oit since it was a free download .

Fistful of Lead.
Easy to learn. Cinematic feel. Handles a lot of figures on the table w/o slowing down. Tons of positive reviews out there if you don't believe me.
Only $6!

I am biased being the author.

Richard,
I will second "Fistful of Lead" as I did on TMP, for ll the same reasons.  If you want detail and complexity, look at Six Gun Sound.

I would have to say Dead Man's Hand is pretty ace and ticks all the boxes.

Fistful of Lead is a lot of fun. I also like the sound of Dead Man's Hand. There is alsi Shoot & Skedaddle coming soon from the LAF's Elbows. See some of the recent threads for this one.

I'm always keen to promote my game, but A) it's not out yet...and B) if someone is just starting to look into Old West gaming there are some great "free" or very cheap rules sets available.

Tombstones N' Tumbleweeds are easy rules and only cost a couple of dollars, but my personal preference is Six Gun Sound, Blaze of Glory from Two Hour Wargames. Dead Man's Hand are also good but I've not played that a lot yet...

That's the new steampunk 36mm Old West stuff right?  I dunno, they lost me at steampunk (and they lost me even more with their "own" 36mm scale minis and terrain).  If you play it, definitely post here and let us know.

I'm in no hurry to get that book ($50 for the core book alone), Elbows.
I was thinking that I'd just use my own 28mms for the game...

I'll be putting a tournament report up on an Old West shoot out we had last Sunday with my rules Brink of Battle: Skirmish Gaming through the Ages.  It plays Old West very well, and we had some fantastic games that really had the right 'feel' of this era.  We played in Period 3 - Modern circa 1885.

You can read more at our website or on reviews at Wargame Vault.  www.brinkofbattle.com  I promise you that these rules are truly 'different' from what you've played before.  ;)

If you look for something really different, you have to try "6 gun sound"!
