Title: My Darkest Africa
Post by: Driscoles on November 07, 2006, 07:25:33 AM
Hello,

after I played in Berlin ( were I had a chance to play with the Witchhunter, Dominic and Grimm ) a couple of weeks ago my love for African Adventures was reborn.

I started this african gaming a couple of years ago. But in the town where I life you are surrounded and outnumbered by wargaming worshippers of the company with the unspeakable name. So I had not much opportunities for gaming. But that finally has changed.

At the moment I paint Arabs. I just have finnished Tribal Warriors and Englishmen.

In the future I will paint Belgians. I try to update this topic from time to time with pictures from Figures and  Battlereports from my own rules.

I would appreciate your comments.

Here are some pics from Minis I just have finnished.

Hi Bjoern - lovely figures!

Your DA game in Berlin has also rekindled my passion for Africa!
I am now working on my Sudan forces.

Maybe we can do a TSATF game in January?
I would also like to try your DA rules with characters!! :D

I LOVE those colours, especially on the Brit - the red coat is beautiful. And who could dislike Corto?

@Bjoern - I will spend the next two months doing the Brits.  Can you work on the Mahdists?  We should have enough for a game by January.

@Prof - There were some recent posts on TMP on the best place to get TSATF.  Let me check and get back to you.  For our purposes, it is best to get the TSATF 20th Anniversary edition which comes together with "The Sword in Africa".

@Prof - I ordered my copy of TSATF directly from Larry Brom from their Amazon.com Z shop.  But some on TMP say that their email service provider has still not recovered from Hurricane Katrina.

You could also order from Castaway Arts in Australia - good and friendly service - and also great Sudan figures.  Say Dominic sent you and that you will buy him a Tiger Beer next time you see him in Singapore!

Ok Dom, I will do the Mahdists.
You`ll probably see the progress here !

I did very good experience with my TSATF copy from Mr. brom directly ordered at his Z-Shop. But that was many years before Kathrina.

I would also like to by the scenario book. But hesitate because of the price.

What is Tiger Beer. I thought I knew it all, but that is not familiar to me !

Björn, Unfortunately Brom's Z-Shop is empty at the moment

Dom, thanks, I will try it with Castaway Arts but i'm not sure to be next time in Singapore to buy him a beer :)

Hello,

today I played a Darkest Africa Game with Mathias for fun and playtesting my rules.

We had lots of close combat and the result was satisfying. I think with only a few little changes the rules for close combat might work.

Another plus was that Mathias understood the rules easily. That was my main aim. Easy and fun rules !

Those are the forces. On the left some fierce Native warriors who are darn angry on the Arab slavers.

The figures are organised in Units. Minimum Size is 5 soldiers for a combat unit. The units are usually led by Leader ( they fight better and have some effect on morale but they are no must ) The most important Unit is the command unit. When this unit is destroyed the game is lost !

The mission for the arabs was a simple breaktru mission. And get the slaves on the other side of the board. The slaves are represented by the bearers. The Native Warriors are all kept as hidden units and are preparing an ambush ! Here Mathias moves his men through the ruins and the open ground closer to the jungle. He knows there is danger !

Suddenly arrows rain down on the first Arabs. A rifle unit who was securing the flank is attacked !

When the ambush came some Arabs decided to charge into the forrest where they expected the enemy!

The Native unit wisely decides to withdraw !

Meanwhile more ambushes came on top of the Arabs

A charge against the Arab comand unit ! The command unit must make a morale check when charged. The unit failed and flees immediately !

After the command unit fails there morale check the charger turns against the rifle unit ! The slaves in the back are still under guard of two Arab mercenaries but help is on its way and no quarter is given !

The command unit fails another morale check to regroup and continues there rout to the closest table edge. The Arabs lost the game with the loss of the command unit !

I hope you had fun with the pictures and report.

Good night and thanks to Mathias for an entertaining and fun evening !

Great game, I loved the atmosphere of the board and the models.

Can I ask where you got those red arrow pointers? I'd love to have some of those for games, makes stuff so much easier, haha.

Thank you Guys !

@ Pax I bought those markers at Battlefield Berlin. They have an online store and are a very good and reliable store. Here is there website :

http://www.battlefield-berlin.de/

The arrows are from Gale Force Nine ! I havent ordered directly by them. They have lots of those tokens. Wound marker, Turn marker and all kind off stuff. I thought those arrows are useful they are printed on both sides. Charge / retreat.

Hi Flashy,
thank you !
thats a simple wargames board for multi purpose. I used all sorts of different flock for the surface so that it does not look all the same green.
