Ok it's 1/350 but it looks good and seems to be easy to make a waterline version. Ideal for background scenery or even small ship- ship battles. I can see myself buying a couple.

Does have potential certainly :)
And it's near enough 6mm as to make no odds but I don't think anybody games (let alone manufactures ) 6mm pirates.
cheers

Which means there's a gap in the market - any takers?
:D

Didn't Heroics & Ros produce 1/300 Marlburian range?
BTW it's worth looking at the rest of Revell's upcoming range of snaptite toys, there's a rather nice Sherman tank and an M-48 patton in 1/48.
-
Just looked at the H&R catalogue. They do Grenadiers, ideal for Marines, Infantry and Artillery. I reckon from between that lot, their ECW range and the SYW stuff you could probably gather together a respectable crew. :)
-
That could really end up nicely...it'd be wonderful if they had a couple of other ships that size to go with it. Perfect size for a small ship on ship skirmish. I like it!
-

You didn't mention the "after shock panzer IV". Worth looking just to see the paintscheme.
Although the 1/100 scale A-10s and helicopters could be handy....

Zvezda is coming out with a line of 1/350 ships soon also. I saw them at Origins, and they look nice. Plus, they are already waterlined for gaming.

Pirates in 6mm would be easy enough to proxy, there are several manufacturers of age of sail government troops, just don't paint them in matching uniforms.

Oh damn...I may replace my Pirate Skirmish gaming ideas with those ships...must google! DAMN YOU!
PS: Weesparky --- did you happen to note how many ships Zvezda was doing?

Can't be certain, but I saw a press photo with 4 different ships.
-
Cool, it looks like the picture above might be a box with two ships in it? Either way, if there are (between both companies) at least 2-3 different ships that's more than enough to get my gears working.
-
Just picked up one the Revell Pirate ships. It's excellent value for money, mine came for about $20 AUD. Haven't put it together yet but it can be assembled as a waterline model and you have a choice of furled sails or making your own. Perfect for dressing a pirate game as background scenery or if you buy two, perfect for any 17th/ 18th C naval games.
-
Still tempting :D

Better still, it all clips together and the instruction sheet is remarkably clear and well laid out. The sails btw are paper you cut out from the instruction sheet so if you want to have them unfurled you might want to look at alternatives. I have a feeling that these will be popping up on gaming tables everywhere. It's well detailed for what it is and cheap.
-
So, is 1:350 the new naval gaming trend? Instead of 1:1200??
2 Companies bringing out models in that scale at al most the same time surely can't be pure coincidence? o_o
-
I always figure scale is solely dependent on the type of ship.
Age of Sail you're more likely to have small engagements within a couple hundred yards. Obviously large Pacific battles from WW2 - you're fighting almost over the horizon, or launching aircraft at each other etc. I think scale fits nicely for small 1-3 ships per side "skirmishes" in the Age of Sail. Definitely something I'd be interested. Now...if you fought a huge Nelson-scaled fight in this size...it'd be rough! lol
PS: Any word on the Zvezda stuff? I looked at their site (poorly translated) and couldn't find any mention of them.

1/350 has been a popular modelling scale for quite some time now. Japanese warship models came in 1/700 since the 1970s ( as opposed to the Airfix standard of 1/600). 1/350 is just double the size.
I gave the ship a dry fit to see how it would work as a waterline model. I think it needs some fine plastic strip around the bottom for it to work and I'll probably base it you iron out any errors I inevitably make adding to the hull this way.
Upside is it's an absolute breeze to put together. Parts fit is excellent the way the rigging clips on and braces the masts is simple but jolly clever in my view. The only very minor criticism I have is that Revell saw fit to put their name on the stern on the outside. Minor irritant worth about 60 secs with some fine sandpaper. Now for the inner child, I suspect if properly weighted it will float in the bath and for those of us who want a waterline model, the hull bottom looks like it will make a very good 28mm long boat. Two boats for the price of one. :)

Interesting 8)
Comes with cannon but no crew?
-
Can you give us a couple of pics for scale? I'm assuming this is perhaps...4-5" long? Maybe a bit more?

Aha! Someone else to play with :D

I quite like the idea of gaming sailing ships :D
Never thought I'd stray from 28mm but the butterfly is airborne !!
Made a dolly earlier for crew but scale creep has crept and it's 10mm .....

That's about twice the size needed :? It might look ok insitu though :)
I've always fancied doing some coastal work in a smaller scale and now's the perfect excuse :D

Though I did find myself looking at 1:200 sail ships... Heller go a golden hind and a few others :D

That might work then ;)
Quite a few good ones there, 1:150 as well which would be 15mm, or there abouts :D

I'm in the same boat (badum tsssss!). I love Age of Sail stuff but not enough to invest a ton of money and build a huge beautiful table, buy lots of minis etc. So the idea of grabbing up a couple of ships for $10-12 a pop is really tempting. Though I did think a large scale game at a convention would be quite pretty... lol
Speaking of 1:350...what kind of games exist for them? I struggle because when I see the Age of Sail games at conventions they are without exception small scale, super-slow, boring, fuddy-duddy simulations. I walk by an hour or two later and the same three guys are sitting there, ships all of 6" from where they were previously, discussing tacking etc.
I'd like "realism lite" style rules. Something with a dash of hollywood. Any suggestions?
-
Quite possibly some sort of Full Thrust mod might do the trick, quite a cinematic rules set although I may be talking out of my backside lol
One that would include land actions and coastal bombardment would do the trick nicely :)
cheers

Captain Blood has a good fun set of pirate rules that includes some ship on ship action and that I guess could be rigged for ship movement.
Edit: I know you know this James ... Was replying to previous post! :D
