A few friends and I decided to collect Heresy era "30k" Legion armies. There are seven of us, each collecting a different legion.
Mine are Ultramarines and here are some pictures of the first five:

There are more pictures on my blog,

Nicely done!

These are post-battle of Calth then, judging by the sarge's faceplate? Looking tasty :D

Nicely done. Being a 2nd-Ed-only-player I have no idea about the current 40K history though.

wonderful. Forgeworld was mostly out of my price range when I played aside from vehicle doors and such, but I always LOVE seeing people putting good paint on great minis! An army in this quality will look ace!

Story has hardly changed, other than some retcons and fleshing out the history with novels and rulebooks and fluff pieces. 30K is the Horus Heresy, which was mentioned a lot in 2nd edition but only as a simple overview. Now it is completely fleshed out with a couple dozen novels and artbooks and such. Forgeworld does a complete line of 30k models now along with cofee-table quality rulebooks that are mostly art and fluff books showcasing their gorgeous resin models.

Nice Mk-IV models, I prefer my Ultramatines a bit darker (to avoid any Smurf commenst) these days, but otherwise a splendid job and very moody.
-
Great figs. Loads of character and flavor.
Not that I pay attention to GW that much but has 30K become the new 40K?

Story has hardly changed,
Ahhhhh, good, then I can break out my old Squat Army then.
On a more serious note, the Ultramarines are very well done, great job.

Now I remember why I stopped playing 40K. One of my armies got cancelled. Nearly forgot that because of all those shiny new things.

IIRC, all Squats were eaten by the Tyranids now. A pity, as I have a platoon's worth awaiting painting, but we usually go with those parts of the fluff we like. "Ignorance is bliss, citizen" indeed.

Thanks for all the kind words. These are indeed post-Calth, hence the red sergeant's helmet.
@Agis, I agree that most Ultramarines are done too brightly, this was my compromise as I didn't want to go all Crimson Fists on them. My initial test figures came out a lot brighter and truly were smurfs. As an aside, I am massively impressed with your work, and enjoyed perusing your website, I bow before the master Sir!
I must admit that I am not much of a 40k player, preferring to just use whatever miniatures I want and also whatever rules I like. I do however like the canon and the "grim dark" sci-fi.
@Dentatus I don't know if 30k is necessarily the new 40k, but certainly it attracts more fluffy gamers, rather than 12-year-olds and the middle aged men who like to n00b stomp 12-year-old kids. It helps that much of it is Forgeworld and prices keep the riff-raff away ;)
In all honesty, the Heresy novels are my major inspiration here, being as they are good reads and approaching a "period" of the 40k universe that sees the death of optimism and the birth of the Imperium "as we have it". I would certainly recommend reading them.
As regards Squats, I too used to collect the little chaps, but offloaded them a while back. It was heartbreaking, but realistically I was never going to use them.

Can't agree more, I rarely play 40K these days.
I played some games with Death Guard vs Eldar using my rules. Story driven fun.
The HH books are also the main inspiration for me. I used to hear the "Flight of the Eisenstein" audiobook while painting my DG!
;)

Dan Abnett did some of the HH novels, correct? After Eisenhorn, I'll read just about anything he jots down.
Agis - "Story-driven fun" is exactly what I want.
