Greetings fellow adventurers.
I am somewhat new to this site. I have posted a few other hobby threads and was impressed by how many people viewed the thread on LAF. On larger forums I would quickly see my new posts buried under a mountain of newer posts, and would end up with very little views. Due to all of this I decided that LAF was the perfect home for this thread.
I am going to keep this original post fairly short on text. I will only talk about the documentation part of the project for right now. There is very little information about these miniatures on the web. I was lucky enough to find the product codes on SOL.
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tpope/sol/soldiers-swords/castle-falkenstein.html . I was lucky to find this since I did not have all the original blister packs. While I did have a good number of them, there were a few that I had loose instead. The first part of the project is to provide a visual reference for the line. After this original post I will consider that part of the project halfway done. The Lost Minis Wikki needs updated as well, but adding an entire new line to the wikki is a somewhat daunting task for my modest computer skills.
There is only one known blister pack missing from the collection. I am missing 155007 Soldiers. I have never seen these miniatures, so if somebody has them even pictures would be appreciated.
155001 Gentlemen.

Interesting... I vaguely recall havng seen some of these years ago. Were they made for a set of rules, boardgame, or some such?
-
I remember seeing these models but didnt get any at the time. Are they more 25mmish, or more 28mmish?
-
Hi guys.
Castle Falkenstein was originally an RPG done in the 90's. It was redone by Steve Jackson Games, and absorbed into the GURPS range. You can find a nice review on the original here: http://robertdushay.home.mindspring.com/Museum/Other/CFalk.html
I will be honest with you, I don't know a whole lot about the game. I did buy the Steve Jackson version. I wanted to look at the artwork and read the fluff. I have only had a chance to glance over it so far. I actually happened upon these miniatures by accident. I am buying parts of a large collection from a friend of mine. On one of the buys I ended up with a couple of blister packs. I was mildly interested. The last time I went for a visit I was fortunate enough to pick up the rest of the collection. Once that happened I was pretty well committed to keeping the collection intact. I have a rule that I only keep minis in my collection that are painted. Otherwise it's off to my ebay store with them.
I intend to read more into the game. I may even try to write some table top rules that include playing cards instead of dice.(read review mentioned further up in this reply for more on playing cards)
Thanks for the interest.
Jason.

I have some of the original Castle Falkenstein RPG books, and, while I'm not into role-playing, I thought I'd like to explore the background. Along with the fantasy parts, it seemed have a lot more 'Continental' adventures, something I tend to miss in most material I see. I even enjoy hanging out in 'Gothic Horror' just for snatches of central Europe adventures.
Will be watching with strong interest further details! 8)
FYI, yes, this is an inappropriate place for sales and trades, unless you're a manufacturer. Moderators usually just move such a post, which would be a shame as the majority of the discussion isn't such.
May I ask you to delete that part yourself (yet another forum perq I LOVE; no edit time limit) and post a request in the Bazar(sic)?
Thanks mucho!!!
Doug

Edited.

I believe they are 25mms.

I wouldn't call the Prussians in this setting absolute evil exactly. They just happen to be secretly allied with the Unseelie Court. The Bavarians, interestingly, are allied with the Seelie.
-
I had pinned these down to Jeff Valent Studios but was unaware of Castle Falkenstein.

These were actually done under Soldiers & Swords. Jeff must have done the sculpting. He did retain the rights to some of the miniatures that were not based on artwork from any of the books.
I hadn't seen this picture before. Thanks for sharing.

great work 2ndhandwizard!
I never seen these miniatures before despite being a fan of Castle Falkenstein when released and played several campaings, The basic rulebook was published in Spain, and the expansion books were quite common in the stores but never seen blisters of the miniatures range.
Guys if you dont know the game I suggest you to look for it, it worths a read. Castle Falkenstein was a great and innovative game in the rpg, now steampunk and using cards instead of dices seems to be a common thing, but back in the 90s this game was a groundbreaking innovation, in fact many people disliked the game because of being "so different".
Also the publishing was great, with cool graphic design, inner color pages with double spread illustrations, the rules explanation was displayed in a narrative tale style until the point the games advertising was "It's a novel. It's a game. It's both. It's Castle Falkenstein". Even the usual rpg character sheet wasn't there, instead you had to keep notebook writing down your "biography"
It was a great and innovative game that changed many things on how rpg are nowadays... isn't obvious i'm a fan of Castle Falkenstein? lol
-
I would like to further stress the point that Donpimpom made above. I bought the original RPG from Drive Thru RPG 2 nights ago. So far all the background fluff is very interesting. I am also intrigued by the concept of advancing characters through writing it in their biography.
As I delve further into this game and background I am quite glad I stumbled upon this collection.
I have started painting already. My first Prussian should be ready for pictures sometime this weekend.

Try to find the companion "Comme il faut", it's the typical first expansion with all the stuff they didn't had room for on the rulebook
-
I prefer the american expansion. It really has a lot more useful info than Comme il faut (unless you are mainly interested in the high society's lifestyle minute details)
-
I have two of the dwarfs, never realized they were CF
-
I have the dragons in human form. Lovely minis, hard to come by
-
This takes me back. I have the original Castle Falkenstein RPG, and the expansion Comme Il Faut. Although the setting is a bit weird in places, it's probably the finest example I can think of where the rules of a game perfectly complement the setting. The idea is that a time travelling RPG writer from our time gets stuck in a parallel Victorian universe. He tries to teach the Victorians a simple roleplaying game, but initially he uses dice. Dice are for cads, and several ladies swoon. Therefore he switches to playing cards so that the ladies can join in ;-)
Loads of nice touches like that. Women can't be killed physically, as only a cad would harm a lady. But they can take 'constitutional damage' from harsh language and vulgarity, and fall into a faint if it all gets too much. Sounds silly, but very wittily written.
-
Castle Falkenstein was very innovative for the time, both in mechanisms and setting -one of the first VSF / Steampunk games, a few years after Space 1889 , though with magic and non-human races it was kind of Victorian Shadowrun. Historical and fiction characters are thrown in as in Anno Dracula / The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Great emphasis is placed on playing the (detailed) period atmosphere / ethics, in a very 'storytelling' way.
Never managed to convince enough people to play a game, but the rich background (most of the 200 pages) is so well-thought and pleasantly written that it makes an enjoyable reading by itself, with such nice touches as 'A gentleman walks with his wife on his right and his mistress on his left, to prevent embarrassing confusions'.
A lot of inspiration potential for 'EotD' factions / 'IHMN' companies.

Interesting - I have the RPG book and the two expansions, and I have the "missing" Soldier pack (can't post a picture, unfortunately - technically challenged; I don't, for example, even own a cell phone). Other than that, had only ever seen the Wizards & Sorcerers, and Dragons in Human form. The Soldiers pack has three figures: a man aiming a revolver (looks bit like a Colt) with his gloved right hand (in a duelist-like pose), wearing a cape (left arm hidden under it), knee-high boots, cuirass with a winged dragon emblem on it,cape, and a helmet with a cres similar to the Austro-Hungarian dragoons and cuirassiers of the 1860's - 1914; a bare-headed duelist in typical en-garde position (left gloved hand up, right grasping the saber with arm bent at elbow, saber point forward), bloused boots, wearing a military tunic with four rows of hussar-like lace across the front and shoulder straps/epaulates (interestingly, but for the lace the tunic is more like a lancer's, as the opening would be down the right front); the third man is in same uniform as the other sword carrier, but without gloves, and he leads with his left arm, his saber-wielding right arm behind him and raised as if to make a cut.

Those ladies are great, and your paintjob does them credit! :-*
I REALLY need to get my Gothic Horror stuff back on tracks, evil Cossacks, and everything... Well, maybe a few figs after Horisont, I have a bad case of the Gob/fantasy/LotR bug atm, and several projects that need some love, too ;D

Superb Paintjob

These look great.
Thanks to a message from an LA user, I picked up the missing set from the collection. :)
Now if I could manage to finish my earthdawn collection. :D
-
Earthdawn? Really?
One can only imagine naked scream from Hercules, on finishing the Augean Stables, being told he had to next take on my basement AND storage shed...
By the way, don't think anyone mentioned the original casters being Soldiers and Swords; from what I'm seeing elsewhere, Steve Jackson marketed them as well? Same casters?

Steve Jackson released a GURPS version of Castle Falkenstein back in 2000. I didn't think they sold any miniatures for it though.

Noticed a couple of listings, out of stock, at Nobel Knight Games with product codes of SJGxxxxxx. I, of course, jumped to a conclusion. :D

And I picked up a few when sold ridiculously cheap several cons ago.
Still, the packs listed at the store are High Fayrie #1 and Wizards & Sorceresses #2, stock numbers SSG155003 and SSG155019. As out of stock, I fear we shall never know for certains; I suspect SJG may have gotten some of the unsold stock to disperse when receiving the license. That, or NobleKnight merely pulled the numbers out of their nether regions... lol

I have these also, I thought they were Flintloque figures when I bought them off ebay.
I will try to find them and post a picture

Yes, those three indeed are the Castle Falkenstein soldiers pack. Having dug out my old Castle Falkenstein, I can attest to the fact that they are derived from drawings in the ruleset/book. The picture of the shooting cuirassier, however, lacks the cloak (and has a star, instead of a dragon emblem, on the cuirass itself).
