Title: Defiance Games Alien Drones; are they shipping?
Post by: Mingans Marauders on July 18, 2013, 12:49:38 PM
For my sorta Falling Skies game I was thinking about using these little buggers as my Skitters. I MIGHT mod a few up with Genestealer hands, but I think I might just use them as is.

My plan is order the mega swarm whatever it is called pack on their website, but I know for awhile with the marines they didn't have them. Are the drones out and shipping?

Thanks!

Lord forgive them, for they know not what they do... lol

Generally the answer to any question which begins with "Is Defiance Games..." is a cloudy grey vortex of the unknown, and unlikely.

FRP Games has them in stock.  You might want to consider ordering them there, given Defiance's poor reputation for timeliness.

Are they still using that horrible PVC-ish weird plastic?  :?  Their Chinese troopers look like they'd make some good bits, but I'd not want to deal with the material.  I had also been interested in their hardsuit (which will probably never appear).  Shame shame shame.

Yep, it's the same material. And stay away from the Chinese Militia guys - worse figures I've seen in a while (and to prove my point, here's just a pic of one of the sprues I received):

And yes, they are THAT miscast, it's not a photo problem.

Gah, their quality really is garbage huh?  I've never ordered a box... :-X

Shame, I saw the Chinese heads and thought they'd make decent Rebel trooper helmets for Star Wars or something.

Some of the heads are usable...but even those have small defects (bubbles). I've already complained and I was promised some new figures.

They've been much more active lately so I wouldn't rule out the hardsuits just yet. Seeing that their casting quality hasn't massively improved as of yet, I'd personally be happy to wait for a while so they can cut their teeth properly before making those.

Yeah, even if they shape up the molds and release the hard suits...that material will keep me from buying any.  Overall, a pretty crap outfit at the moment.

Those heads were the only item I thought had some potential
Yep, the Chinese militia helmets are a nice enough design. But then the Germans weren't that bad either, designwise. The actual realization was a bit wanting.

Ok, a little update. I contacted Gary when I saw my initial order and he replied that they would send new ones. I'm on vacations and my brother just told me he received a parcel from Defiance Games. They sent my order again and all the casting problems seem to be resolved. My brother says that all the heads are now ok (there were other problems, but they seemed to be resolved also). I'll try to take some pictures as soon as I return home.

So kudos to Defiance.

Imagine all the time and money they would save if they weren't constantly having to cast new models to send to people to replace the poor ones they sent out in the first place.

Imagine all the time and money they would save if they weren't constantly having to cast new models to send to people to replace the poor ones they sent out in the first place.

The problem seems to be with the initial batches of minis. For what I can gather, it's no use doing pre-orders with them: you'll get worse minis than the next production round. That happened with the German Panzergrenadiers; with their vehicle (who was pulled out from production) and the Chinese Militia.

Their new containers seem to be ok - they are in plastic and they aren't made by Defiance but by another company (I seem to recall that the owner was a member here, can't remember his name).

So,if the initial poster wants to try and buy the Alien Drones, they should be good by now.

And you get the added bonus of not contributing towards Defiance.

what I cannot understand is over in the USA they seem to have a massive following, is quality really an afterthought to price that much with American gamers?
Title: Re: Defiance Games Alien Drones; are they shipping?

nope, but apparently advertising is a good way!

Moreover, the field of scifi plastic sets is still very poor, either in quantity and in quality: Mantic marines are nice, but veeery characteristic (same for the stormtrooper from the other company i don't remember now), and the EM4 are... of another age.

So, if you don't want to use Cadians for any kind of scifi faction, that's a good option. Sadly.

Not sure if that is correct - they continually get a slagging over here as far as I can see.  Opinions seem to mirror those you guys have expressed, lots of optimism followed by the feeling of being let down and ripped off.

Well i am an American gamer. I have an easy enough philosophy. I am looking for a good product for a good price. Nothing more nothing less really.
As for a following over here in the States,  have to say i haven't seen it. Too much "let down" from the company to grant them a following.

I don't have a large gaming group...but I haven't seen anyone with Defiance stuff, let alone ever mentioned.  I haven't seen any at the past four or five cons I've been to.  I don't know if Defiance is even on most American gamers' radars.

Wargames Factory is building quite the following since the split up though.  They're churning out some pretty good stuff and it's a common household name amongst gamers now.

I was just at Historicon. Saw them for sale in the Dealer's Hall when i did a quick walk. Don't recall whom was selling them.
I do recall the Wargames Factory stand and all that they had for sale. Some snazzy stuff i must admit.

And i would have to disagree about not being on "American gamers' radars" though. I do believe that they are seen. Unfortunately just not in a good light and for that they are suffering a lot for it.

I should think it will help Mantic's case a bit when they get their hard plastic Enforcers out. They decided, a bit belatedly IIRC, to make them in conjunction with Deadzone KS but the Enforcer aesthetics are pretty generic. The current Mantic humans are "restic" of course.

Dreamforge? They are indeed rather specific in their aesthetics, but technically the miniatures themselves are likely the neatest plastic you can get.

Viridian Inderdicts are somewhat more generic but not a whole lot of people know they are still available.

You know, I've always wondered why those don't get more table time. The metal Viridians in the current 'Metropolis' range are great generic sci-fi figures and I hardly ever see them mentioned.

As for Defiance, I don't think they have a big following here in America. I haven't ever seen their figures in person and I go to as many games stores and conventions as I can.

I really was hoping the Chinese would be cast better, can't say I'm ready to risk a Defiance order yet.

Defiance's design for the Hardsuits is quite nice.  If a company capable of getting a product to market produced them, I'd buy a set in an instant. That's the irritating thing about Defiance, as far as I'm concerned.

The design isn't Defiance's. They just bought the rights to produce it from some sci-fi concept artist whose name I cannot recall at the moment.

As did Antenocitis Workshop. Who have actually released their own "hardsuit":

Antenociti's continuing their "outsourcing" with their forthcoming drop ships too.

But on the subject of Defiance hardsuits, one needs to note that even at its cheapest, the Antenociti suit is much more expensive than they will be if/when they get produced -- probably by about an order of magnitude. I do expect that to show in the quality as well but then I'm a bit of a cynic.
Title: Re: Defiance Games Alien Drones; are they shipping?

Oh, agreed...to me that was the possible appeal of the Defiance suit, it'd probably be incredibly affordable...assuming it wasn't a pile of junk.  We'll see if it ever shows up.

What? Because they used an outside concept artist? Or because its a similar design to Defiance?
Just saying because the none of the designs are exactly original, there's nothing new under the sun, remember.....
Title: Re: Defiance Games Alien Drones; are they shipping?

Because they contacted an outside designer and asked (possibly paid) for permission to use the design. No allusions to anything sinister such as ripping something off as such.

A bit of an exaggeration.
The Antenociti one is about $24.  The Defiance ones will supposedly retail 3 for $30.
The differences, of course, being that the Antenociti one is available now, it is from a good company that will sell you quality models, you won't have to nag them to get it, you won't have to ask for a replacement -- nor a replacement for the replacement...

Nor will you have to accept miscast troops you didn't ask for as compensation for them not being able to deliver your hard suit preorder due to inability to actually cast them.  I read where someone accepted some of those wondrous Chinese troopers when Defiance couldn't deliver their little jeep thing.

The price point of the Antenociti suit  did put me off it.  It is a beautiful model, but it is at the high end of the price spectrum for a single gaming piece, and my hobby budget is somewhat constrained right now.  Perhaps at a later date.

Yep, properly done there is no reason the digital sculpt stuff can't be excellent...it's just not a skill some people have.  I do think it's an absolute no-brainer though for vehicles, robots and the like.

I'm personally waiting for 3D printing prices to drop.  I love that people can design stuff and have it produced one-off etc...but the costs are pretty tough right now (especially if you want the highest quality prints).  I think we have the best all worlds, except for the obsession with damn resin....
