Portable war tubas...?
:D

;)

Well they're not British, they're arm in arm and that sort of behaviour wasn't allowed after the Oscar Wilde trials ::)
Aircraft detection headgear?
-
German veterans deafened and blinded by explosions, fitted with a primitive audio-visual aid?
-
I suspect it is some kind of acoustic detection device...
Or the first meeting of the steam punk Mickey Mouse Club.... :D
-
Maybe that was just some kind of device testing. They tried all kinds of funny stuff back then.

Photoshop ;D

a crazy radar device :)

They're portable sound detectors - basically acoustic direction devices as already suggested.
They work on the same principles (roughly speaking) as the concrete sound mirrors here in the South East of England - can be aimed at varying heights directions to pick up sound from different heights, and obviously the wider the 'scoop' the greater the pick-up. Just like cupping your ears with your hands really. I'm not sure what the goggles have to do with it though!

The goggles? They're just cool! (or not).

sort of binoculars, I'd guess. Probably trying to see and hear far.

If we are being serious now: I would guess that they were more blinkers than goggles, to stop you seeing rather than aid vision.
Close your eyes, you should see a marked improvement in your hearing.
Not sure if that is strictly true, but it does allow you to focus more fully on what you can hear without the distraction of your brain automatically analysing what you can see.
;)
To be honest, I much prefer Elk101's theory.

micky mouse fan club
Would have been my guess too ;)

Feind hört mit!

Whatever those are, I wouldn't want to wear them when the artillery shells come in...
