Title: Northwest Fronter goodness
Post by: commissarmoody on 08 May 2008, 08:43:16 PM
Hello all, I am looking at geting some NW fronter action going on, Thinking of the Man who would be king idea.
I have a few questions, like dose any one have any good resorce sites for the fighting on the fronter.
Also how do Old glory, foundry, and redout mins stack up aginst each other?
are they compatable?

Well now then...

Foundry's Afghan tribesmen are by the Perrys, and there are only about 20 different figures but they are beauties.  Supplement them with Sikh Wars figures from Foundry, also by the Perrys. This is a huge range. I also use almost all the Copplestone (for Foundry) Darkest Africa Baluchis, and quite a few of the Zanzibaris pass muster too. I have over 100 NW Frontier tribesmen assembled from these sources - all Foundry, all fit in quite well together, although the Copplestone figures are a teensy bit taller, but not as tall as his own later stuff for his own company.

The Old Glory Pathans are really rather crude I'm afraid. They scale in alright, but are pretty ropey looking sculpts.

I haven't looked at the Redoubt NW Frontier - didn't even know they did them. I do do have a few Redoubt colonial Brits mixed in with my British and Indian army forces which are a mix drawn from various Foundry ranges plus quite a lot of the old Essex Sudan range. Redoubt are definitely on the tall side, and not as well made as Foundry.

I guess the British Colonial figures of choice now would have to be the superlative Perry Sudan range - the Highlanders in particular are gorgeous. One would think that these should scale in pretty well with their earlier work for Foundry, although Perrys own 28mm stuff, seems to me to have got a little more diminutive and stocky recently...

Thanks!
Yeah Redout dosnt do a NW range, I was just looking at there page and had them on the mind.
So I was looking at the oldgloy range to flush out some of the mins I cant seem to find other places. Such as I  really dont like the look and poses of the Foundry mounted hill tribes, and I cant find any one with gattling guns and crew. Kind of looking at the Afgans and the Brits.
I have on order a mess of foundry NW hilltribes, and Highlanders, guides, and shiks. I was looking to see in the old glory mins would floush out guns and packs.
Thanks agine this is helpful.
I was on the foundry site and the hilltribes are still posted up on there.

Also I completly forgot about perry mins. I am going to go check them out also.

Oooh yes. Some of those Castaway Pathans are very nice indeed... Might have to add a few of those. You can never have too many NW Frontier tribesmen... (Like pirates, really)

Any idea if they have a UK or European distributor?

Thanks.  :)

Hi, As I'm not sure my best suggestion is to contact Gerry at Castaway Arts.

He does visit Historicon every year.

I've ordered from Castaway a few times, first class service and Gerry is a real gentleman. Best delivery was 4 days from Australia to the UK, can't say fairer than that and the figures are lovely.

We've got a couple of Pathan packs as well from Tiger. Not my favorite of his sculpts, but they'll add something like 20 different poses to the natives.

Also two hord sets of afganit hill tribes, I am going to get some old glory mounted panthans and sword armed ones to help fluseh out the numbers, Now I need feld peaces and cannons for the lot.
Question would Gattlingun crews be panted blue or would they ware the uniform of what ever force there in. The ones I am geting are just in your standed inf get ups and didnt really know what branch of the service they would fall under?

Also dose any one have an idea what the argane army was kited up in dearing the 1879-1844 war? Just on the off chace I can find some some were.

not got any Tiger or Castaway myself but the latest releases from both have sorely tempted me. The new release from Tiger last week looked fantastic and I think it is only a matter of time before I buckle.

I hope they will turn up at a show so I can see them in the flesh but I may not be able to wait that long.

I ordered some Askari Miniatures recently to try and they have been wonderful to paint

I've been accumulating the Foundry Afghan regulars from eBay lately.  The best reference for them is the olf Foundry Colonial catalogue.  There are a couple of shots of some of them on Angus Konstam's Edinburgh Wargames site:

http://www.edinburghwargames.com/Journal04.htm

Scroll down to the Back of Beyond scenario and look for the guard artillerists in classical helmets and guard infantry in skirts.

They are, not surprisingly, an excellent match for the Foundry Afghan tribesmen and British/Indian troops.  And yes, they are meant for the Second Afghan War, but most can be used in both earlier and later conflicts, from 1863 to 1888.

Thanks Aecurtis, I am thinking I will defantly be checking out ebay myself now for some foundry afghan troops.

And yes the Secand Afgan war was more of what I was trying for anways, by buget can only handle war at a time. Besides they should be good up tell about the turn of the centry anways.

Askari has just updated its conlonal Russian range. I am thinking that my guids on a deep recon mission might just stumbla apoine a troop of them some time in the futer ^_^
Also they say that they have Turkes and turkoman in the works so I imagion that my Afganit rang will be flushed out quite nicely with that group. :D

Hi,

I must say the Old Glory Pathans are nice figures. They definately belong to the better sculpted figures from old Glory and they have some beautiful sculpts among them. Like the kneeling Pathan firing from behind a rock. Put them beside a Foundry you will see there is not much of a difference.  Iam talking of these figures :

BTW if you still want to do the 1839-42 Anglo Afghan War then fear not by buying all those tribesmen you will pretty much have your army. They weren't uniformed for that period. Actually it was noted that as late as the third Afghan War (1919) it was common practice for Afghan soldiers to revert to local costume, with just their arms and equipment and maybe a small round woolen cap marking them as soldiery.

How do you tell a "regular" Afghan from an "irregular" Afghan?

The irregular Afghans are in squatting poses.

Sorry...

Excuse the slight thread necromancy, just thought I'd point out that Britannia Miniatures and Bicorne Miniatures also do some Pathans (about a dozen figures each). Might be useful knowledge to those of you who want as many poses as possible. I can't vouch for the quality of either, although the Britannia ones do look quite nice judging from the scant pictorial evidence on their website. Bicorne has no pictures of their NWF figures, I'm afraid.

Not sure about that..I know all the NW Frontier line is withdrawn but when I asked for the lists to be sent to me by foundry it did not include the Pathans. Reason being I think that they are all still available in their India collection under hill tribesme, etc Have a look:
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/INDIA/5/index.asp
Are these the Perries stuff?

I second the use of the Baluchis and Zanzibaris (at least some of them) for the period. Some great looking figures and heaps just got sold on ebay last night..whic one of you fellows outbid me?? GRR

Let me save you a step.  Here's the list of the "withdrawn' NW Frontier packs that bernard at Foundry sent me a few months ago:

NORTHWEST FRONTIER LIST

NW1/1  HIGHLAND INFANTRY COMMAND
NW1/2  HIGHLAND INFANTRY
NW1/3  HIGHLAND INFANTRY MARCHING
NW1/4  SIKH AND GUIDE CHARACTERS
NW1/5  SIKH INFANTRY
NW1/6  GUN AND CREW
NW1/7  BENGAL LANCER COMMAND
NW1/8  BENGAL LANCERS
NW2/1  GUIDE INFANTRY
NW2/2  GUIDE CAVALRY COMMAND
NW2/3  GUIDE CAVALRY
NW2/4  GURKAS COMMAND
NW2/5  GURKAS
NW2/6  AFGAN REGULAR COMMAND
NW2/7  AFGAN REGULARS
NW2/8  AFGAN TURCOMAN REGULARS
NW3/1  AFGAN HIGHLAND BRIGADE
NW3/2  AFGAN ARTILLER CREW
NW3/3  AFGAN GUARD CAVALRY
NW3/4  AFGAN HERATIS CAVALRY
NW3/5  AFGAN CAVALRY IN BEEGHIVE HAT
NW3/6  AFGAN CAVALRY

Yiou can order from this list, and will have to pay an extra dollar or pound per pack.

The Pathans, as suggested by thejammedgatling, are currently available as Hill Tribesmen.

I wouldn't use Beluchis as Pathans, myself, unless I wanted to get the different contingents to squabbling!  But they are nice figures, and no, incredibly, I didn't bid on those last eBay lots...
