Found the metal command figures to round out the plastic sets. Finally finished the first unit and a bit of the second. Not sure what I was thinking last year when I was working on these but I missed parts of the webbing on way too many of the figures. Ah well, I have new lighting and glasses - that should help. :)
I have 5 units of 20 infantry to finish with some additional command and individual Empress and WGF blisters.
What I finished:

Not that my best is all that, but given the number of figures I want to finish, I am trying not to obsess too much on the details. Generally two shades of each color to give some depth and a wash with Army painter add some shade followed with a few coats of Dullcote. Given gencon in August and limited painting time, it should be interesting to see if I can keep up the pace.

They look great.
Like the firing line.
-
excellent!
I can already hear them singing "Men of Harlech"
-
Looking really good!
-
That looks quite OK I think. :)
-
blimey,you've been busy :o
keep em coming! :)

Ha! I am not that fast. I had a bit of a head start as I had mostly painted about half of two units worth of plastic. This month I painted all the metal figures, cleaned up the mistakes and started basing. Some of these figures have rather tall integral bases so my normal basing didn't look very good. I remember reading of using liquid nails so I gave that a try and it worked out a lot better than PVA.
-
Nice, I've not seen many of those figures painted. I thought they would be all over the place.

My thoughts exactly.
-
I like em. But 5 x 20? That sounds like a lot of work. ;)
-
I failed my moral last year as the repetitive nature of a big unit can wear me down, hopefully I do better this time around.
I might have to add a fantasy or pulp figure in between each unit for sanity. lol

Stunning. Thanks for sharing.

Unit three is pretty close as well thanks to a vacation.
I should say finished except for the four kneeling guys without a red stripe on their pants I need to go back and paint. Oops.
-
This army is coming together nicely ;D
-
Unit 3 has finished forming.

The army to date:

I decided to vary the basing a bit if only to help keep the units separate later.

Wow, great progress 8) 8)

" Men of Harlech stop your dreaming , c,ant you see their spearpoints gleaming , see the warrior pennants streaming , to this battle field.
-
Great job. They look fantastic all together like that.
-
Thanks. Its definitely getting harder to stay focused on finishing the army. So many other shiny temptations lurk on the shelves but only two more units to go.

That raised a smile.
I love that bit of the film.

Looking impressive :)
-
Thanks for the reminder of why I'm trying to finish the army. :)
I probably should look into which rules to use as well.
-
Most of October and part of November was too busy for hobby pursuits but I managed to finish the next unit over thanksgiving break.

Those guys look great.
-
wow, great!
what colour are the facings?
-
Thanks. I broke out the lights for this picture so they probably look better just because of that. I am painting the 2nd/24th Warwickshire so the facings are green. I am using a brighter green though than I should have as I wanted it to stand out a bit on the table (base Vallejo MC Deep green with GC Foul green mixed highlight). From the Osprey color plates it should be a lighter green.
-
Looking good, they're going to be quite a site en masse!
-
I finally went out and bought some sheet metal to cut for my gemstone carrying case. Here are all four unit's hanging out:
works very well for the plastic figures. The metal figures come loose on a good bump.
-
Wow ! They look great.
-
Wow ! They look great.
They certainly do.
I am impressed!
:-*
-
Thanks Thagor and Mason. They do look cool en mass. :D The last big unit will probably have to wait for January. Not only will painting time be scarce in December and I need to paint something without a uniform for a bit. lol
-
Finally managed to get back to this project in February. Took some time from the large units to finish a unit of Boers for our first game.

welcome back and congratulations
the reds are gorgeous, what did You use?
-
Most of the paints are foundry. The red vest/jackets are deep maroon (64) with a light GW red wash. The red hat on the left was an old GE red gore highlighted with GW blood red. The rifles are "Aidikolor Oak".
The Aidikolor was a icky sludge reconstituted with a jewelry cleaner thanks to a post I saw here on LAF awhile back. Took a few runs to work but I was happy with the result.
-
great palette
-
Have not had a spare moment to take any pictures but the project is still alive. Actually managed to paint a few units in April and May and get in a few Black Powder Zulu games. Not the best lighting but here is a picture of the first artillery unit I completed.

-
Finally finished the last of my infantry units though I probably will never field it. I couldn't look at the half painted without feeling guilty. lol I have 4 units of 24 and we just don't field that many units in our games. I am leaving the bases unfinished until I decide if I will sell it.

Looks pretty good :)
-
It would be pretty cool to see them all on a table though ;)
-
It certainly would be but we will need quite a few more Zulu to keep the correct ratios on the table. :D

Sounds like you have next years Army Painter project picked then!
And all your friends' as well ;)

There are rumblings of a Franco Prussian war project but I want to finish my Dacian project before that. :D
But back on the subject of the current project. I had quite a few units partially completed while I was painting base colors on the regular foot. Time to finish those now.
Here are the Natal Police from Empress Miniatures. I really like these figures as they were fun to paint.

Went back and almost finished my Redoubt Zulu war British auxiliaries and wounded.

These are older sculpts with some heavy flash but they have a lot of character. A little bling for the battlefield. :)
-
Lovely!
What is the little hole in the clear plastic bases for?
-
Those are my wounded counters. I bought the plastic two piece counter from litko. The lower dial spins from 0-10

Finally got a chance to take some pictures. Here is what I finished in November:
-
Still going strong!
Wonderful. I shall have to start British when I have 200 zulu.
-
If only I painted British as fast as you paint your Zulu! :D
-
Started in November but finished in December as I take forever to paint horses...
This completes my original extended Zulu Army painter project. I will add some Natal native infantry, Empress Lancers and perhaps some mounted infantry. Might even branch out with some Perry Sudan British... but that is another project for next year.
-
Very cool, I like the mix of horse colors.
Any chance of a group shot of everything you did this year?
-
The group shot is everything from 2013-2014.

Thanks for indulging me, good looking force you have there :)
-
Now that is an army!
Are you in fact going tp paint zulus too?
-
Are you in fact going tp paint zulus too?
Thankfully my friend has already done that. I will add one or two Natal native units though.
Thanks for indulging me, good looking force you have there :)
No problem, I had intended to add that but got distracted. I did wind up fielding the entire force in a battle versus our gaming groups Sudanese & Mahdis. Not quite the correct uniform for the theater but...
