The first of four batches : sculpts by Mark Sims, and the Celtic queen is offered as a freebie to anyone buying a multi-blister deal (though she will be available later as part of a character pack).

Lovely stuff! I'm really looking forward to that character pack.
-
Very nice miniatures and Mark Sims' figures are so fun and easy to paint 8)
-
That's Mark at his best right there. Very nice work!
-
I really like the quality and cleanliness of Mark's sculpting, and the character he gets into his figures.
But I always find his Crusader stuff strangely static and frankly, boring.
Sorry to be controversial! Each to their own :)
-
Brilliant! Look forward to seeing them in person. Love Mark's stuff.

Tend to concur with the Captain, but then again I like the no-nonsense approach of sculpting. As Calimero pointed out, the models are a joy to paint, in particular if you're looking to paint up a whole lot of them. While other 28mm ranges are clearly aiming at the 'skirmish market' with lots of individual and (sometimes ridiculous) action-posed models, Crusader provides you with bread and butter for army-building. And that's cool. 8)
Likely won't buy these Celts in the foreseeable future – due to tight funds rather than a lack of interest – but if I ever got round to gaming Caesar's Gallic Wars, they are definitely on the list.
-
I'd second that. I agree they look somewhat boring in the pics, but they work very well in units. They are great to supplement Copplestone's Foundry mini's too.
-
They are certainly workmanlike even if they don't cause me to froth, but only two horse variants again? :(
-
I think Mad Doc Morris has made a great point, I feel exactly like him about these sculpts. As for the mix with foundry, I fear there is much to much size difference. But they complement the Crusader carthaginian range very well, which is good, because this army is already on the shedule with minis bought and ... stored away ::)

I guess they would work quite well with the Renegade Celts. And both ranges have got a similar sculpting style, too.
-
I think these will end up being too small to mix with Renegade. I had a small troop of Crusader Irish that I had hoped to mix with my Gripping Beast, and they were substantially smaller.
-
With regards to size, I have Crusader ACW mixed in with Foundry and Perry ACW without any noticeable difference in size or bulk.
-
It really depends on the range. My Varangians, Vikings and Libyans are spot on Foundry sized, while my Scots and Ancient Germans are bigger. In any case, stillistically Simms comes closer to Copplestone figs than any other sculptor, so I'm fine with it.
-
I like 'em, thing is with Mark he sculpts mainly with ease of painting in mind, he's a gamer not an artist and he's figures are a piece of piss to paint.
If I was going to do a difficult Celtic pattern I'd rather do it on these than any others, 'cept maybe A&A miniatures ;)

It's the same horses he uses for the majority of his ranges, so there are three variants, clearly only two pictured though.
As a personal thing, I find his sculpts a bit boring but reliable. My Saxon troops are all Crusader for example but my character figs are varied. Speaking as a caster, pretty much anything sculpted by Simmsy is a breeze to work with :)

Fair point - thanks for putting me right. You'd think he'd get a few more options done if he's using them so frequently though.

Nice all round photo of the new Celt Queen, painted and photographed by Kev Dallimore.

Kevin did it again :-*

Incredible army building figures. They paint up great, look good in a unit and generally do what you need. They're chunky look in photos generally looks great on the tabletop as well. First stop when starting a new project with forces greater than 10-20 figures.

I think a seperate spear would have been better for 'queeny' rather than the spiked caber she is holding...... ;D
