Title: Amazon shield designs/standards
Post by: Froggy the Great on 08 August 2013, 05:30:39 PM
My googling has been swamped with hits for Amazon.com but no ancient designs - does anyone know of any shield or standard designs attributed to the Amazons?

Can't think of something in particular. Sometimes crescent shields are attributed to Amazons, but there seem to be at least as many depictions of them carrying the large hoplite aspis. Apart from that allegedly old-fashioned gear like double-axes or dipylon shields as well as Oriental/Persian fashion (trousers, Phrygian caps ec.) could be associated with Amazons. However, no dedicated symbols as far as I know.

Maybe make a list of known shield designs for classical Greek nations and then see if there's an Amazonian emblem or design that would correspond thematically?

I would use the Little Big Men Carthaginian (or were they Eutruscan) designs with horses and similar on them. Or wait a year and use the Crocodile Games shields from their Amazon range...

Or the Croc Games Trojans shields also have lots of nice horses on them and there is that whole allies in the Trojan war thing to make the tie in seem more palatable. Link below.

I would think that horses would be the most common. Then maybe owls, and spears and bows.

Thanks all! I've decided to go with a crescent-moon motif, after Artemis and Atalanta.

Froggy there are some common variations to the moon motif, the crescent moons to either side of a full moon or two crescent moons back to back supporting a full moon.

Here's what the Greeks gave them...
weird wing shape things, a tripod and something else (a lyre?) in this rumble with Heracles

Snakes, moons, horses are all fine. Why not a a labrys? That's a double headed axe for those who are unfamiliar with it. Pretty much any neo-pagan iconography would work in a pinch.

I can't think of any Greek depictions of a crescent moon at all - only the odd full moon.
