Post by: Dave Knight on 10 August 2013, 08:24:53 AM
And inserting images o_o

I will have to make do with a link to my blog

http://leadwarriordavek.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/looking-for-help-identifying-purchase.html

Galleys about 5 - 6 inches long.

How do you post a picture?  I tried inset image from above but could not get it to work

Take a look here:

In your case, you might need to right-click the image you want to link, choose "copy image location", and then paste this between the [img] tags.

What does the writing on the blue card say?

Hachette (French publisher?) did a series that had boats, can't remember the title.

alternatively You can upload from Your device using the additional options

as to the galley - the reconstruction of antique vessels is a tricky thing. there is very little evidence of oared boats, since these did not sink when the hull was damaged
the model looks like a an antique image of a phoenician vessel of the preclassic era
(http://www.pictokon.net/bilder/2008-10-bilder-bild-material/historische-schiffe-schiffstypen-boote-der-phoenizier.jpg)

reconstructions usually go after pictorial evidence like in this case.
there is a voluminous tome on this matter, the title slips my mind right now
there are many recovered from rivers, but these are not sea-going specimens.
there was also an experimental reconstruction of a classical athenian trireme in the 70ies, well researched and published
(http://www.buchfreund.de/covers/13217/35618.jpg)

but these are not the droids You are looking for

The inscription on the stand reads "Imbarcazione Fenicia", and that's the best starting point, I'd say. It is thus definitely a model of a Phoenician ship. And these models in particular seem to be sold under the label of "Nauticalia Tribute Models" or some such. They appear to be OOP, though.

Here's a link (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nauticalia-tribute-models-vintage-sailing-ships-galleons-x-7-great-xmas-gift-/370682455824) to an ebay auction – not mine, of course, just for reference. :)

Hadn't considered Nauticalia.

Seem to recall that they had a shop in Chester or Edinburgh?
Had an assortment of reduced things last time I was in but the reduced ships were just 3 masters

At that size they may be suited to converting to 28mm river boats as used by the Romans on the Rhine river frontier.
