Title: Our heat-up for CoC (*UP 19.05.14)
Post by: Mad Doc Morris on 11 August 2013, 04:03:31 PM
In anticipation of TFL's Chain of Command (and by Perry voodoo  o_o) my blogging buddies and myself have decided to build up some basic forces to give the upcoming rules an outing in the Western Desert.
I've just started with an introductory posting on the blog, so there's not much to see yet. The aim is to be quick and effective and not to get lost after the first couple of minis – something we normally don't manage at all. ::) Therefore, as well, there will be no big talk on background or shots of individual figures, just counting units.

First off, a section of infantrymen.

Couldn't resist to test my (fairly limited) skills at photoediting. For the bare bones please have a look at the blog (http://mountainsoflead.com/2013/08/11/ww2_brits_01/).
This thread will be used for further installations, so please stay tuned! :)

I agree... All for the photoshop effect, which is here used to create atmosphere and not really improve the paint job, which - although fast - is spot on! I know I've seen your minis before, but your results never ceases to amaze me! Great work, Doc!

VERY nice indeed.  I can't wait for my set to arrive.

The desert lists aren't in the main rules, but we will have them available very soon after publication as free downloads.

Gents, thanks for your kind words! :)
And, Rich, a small delay of the Africa list might actually give us much needed time to catch up. :D

Here's the next installment, Cpl Sellers and his section are having a run.

Again, some basic troops to fill the ranks quickly, some (bad) photo tricks added for interest. An unaltered version is to be found on the blog (http://wp.me/p3dOwv-8P).

Thanks for watching, dear LAFers! :)

Inspiring stuff.  My Brits arrived a couple of days ago, but the office is stacked floor to ceiling with envelopes at the moment.  I am looking forward to opening up the package once all the rules have been despatched.  Not long to go now!

I pick up the first 1500 copies in four hours time.  Then it's a frantic two days of packaging and posting.

My oldest daughter is back from Uni and is on about dragging me to the gym this morning.  I won't need the gym when I have shifted fifty boxes of rules!  The weight of dead trees is unbelievable.

And here's the third contributor to this madness! :)

My Poms (I spent last week on a business trip with a South African colleague! :D ) were also painted rather quickly. I used the paints suggested by the Artizan painting guide, while also adding Foundry Base Sand for the Khaki Drill uniform. The miniatures were then covered with the Army Painter soft and strong tone dip and then further highlights were applied. Now I am all ecstatic about all the other projects I could do using this technique, as I am quite happy with the result.

At the moment I have a Bren team on my table and the second squad is also in the works. This will be distinguished by the fact that these chaps will be carrying their backpacks.

And of course here is the obligatory photoshopped version of my picture above! :)

Another update for the weekend from me. Today I've added a command team to lead my platoon in battle. Lt. Atkinson and Pl. Sgt. Gardiner (helmeted), along with two spare men - here they are in Photoshop glory(?).

They've also brought along some support weapons, a Boys ATR and the mandatory 2" mortar.

Some can be seen, if you prefer, in traditional stripped-down-2D on the blog (http://mountainsoflead.com/2013/08/30/heating-season-6/).
I've also heard rumours of Italian reinforcements coming in soon… :o

Onwards with third section, led by Cpl Adams. Hereby first platoon is complete and essentially ready for Chain of Command (if anyone can provide an ATR profile?).

After building the full platoon I was left with one single figure (actually and in hindsight, better used as an assistant on the ATR) which I "converted" into an objective marker: a messenger gone astray on the battlefield.

Unaltered pics, like everytime, on the blog (http://wp.me/p3dOwv-9W). Now bring on some support options!

Today it's delivery day for some armoured(?) support – yes, despite it's Friday 13th! I'm not that superstitious, and my troops are in urgent need of additional gunfire if they want to withstand those Eight Million Bayonets – and a "Bren" carrier should easily fix that. ;)

Not the greatest of all models (and that's more down to casting quality rather than design), and I didn't go for the full historical detailing. But it'll do for our games.
Some further remarks and views on the blog (http://mountainsoflead.com/2013/09/13/heating-season-9/). Thanks for visiting/watching/commenting – always appreciated! :)

Pha, superstition! ::)

With CoC table size remains at 6'x4', could perhaps be even smaller for open ground. TFL gave it a go, and I found their report quite illuminating: http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/?p=1591

Thanks fellas!

Rich, sure thing. I started by looking at the the tutorial from Artizan Miniatures (here (http://www.artizandesigns.com/guides/British8thArmyWW2.pdf)), but basically I am just priming them with Army Painter Skeleton Bone and then paint a shirt, helmet or pair of pants here and there with alternative colours. Those are Foundry Base Sand 10A, Vallejo Iraqi Sand or Vallejo Pale Sand. So I am keeping most parts in the Skeleton Bone primer.

Skin is Foundry Mediterranean Skin 12B (thanks to Lt. Hazel and Mad Doc Morris for the tip), webbing Vallejo German Camo Beige.

After laying down the foundation for everything, I wash them with Army Painter soft tone (the little eye drop bottles). Following that I use the same paints I used for foundation to highlight once. The cool thing is that AP have Skeleton Bone as a brush on as well, so the primer showing is no problem at all. I follow that with another hightlight of foundation paint plus some white.

Clothing usually has 2 highlights, skin usually 3, but I allow myself to add or subtract if I feel like it and am happy with the result.

Weapons are done in Foundry Spearshaft 13A, wood grain is emulated with Vallejo Desert yellow and then I wash the wooden parts with a sepia wash (for example GW, cause it's a nice red, warm colour) until I am happy. Metal bits are Vallejo Dark Grey and I do the highlights after the wash described below by adding white.

Hope that helps. :)

Helps?  It scares me to death.  I can't paint like that!!!   lol

You certainly set the bar high, no doubt about that.  Very interested in your choice of undercoat.  I was just wondering about that.  I will have to pick some up at Crisis next weekend.

Just finished my Afrika Korps, so I may paint them first as I'll be using a darker undercoat for them.

Cheers

Hey Rich,

na, I am sure you can. It's not rocket science, really. You just need to remember where to set the highlights.

I'll be at the Crisis as well. Would you like me to bring you one along so you can have a look at it from close up?

For Corps I've heard some people praising the AP Desert Yellow spray as a primer. The advantage really is the fact that they have their colours as spray and brush on. And the colour sprays are fine (in comparison to their - for me - unreliable varnish).

Cheers,

Dimi

As it happens, I think I'll be bringing mine to Crisis.  I am frantically trying to get them all ready, then I have some buildings to make.

I also need to knock up some support weapons.  Blimey, so much to do!

Please do come and say hello.  Maybe have a game of a Chain of Command too!

First day of the new year, but for the time being my last contribution to this joint project. Therefore a variety of pieces, anything I've been able to paint and photograph during the expiring days of 2013, before things had to be stored away.

Starting with a Vickers HMG which shall deliver fire support to suppress those pesky Italian Breda teams swarming all over the place.

Next, a German scouting car, the inevitable Panzerspähwagen 222. Only minor alterations from the original model by Warlord Games.

And finally, less glamorous, yet my favourite bit of handicrafts, a few deployment markers for "Chain of Command" (or any other ruleset using some kind of markers, of course).

Further detail, blurp and pictures can be found, as always, on our blog (http://wp.me/p3dOwv-eY). Thanks for watching here and over there – and thereby a somewhat belated Happy New Year! :)

A belated "thanks a lot" to all! :)
Since I was asked that elsewhere: The signs are made of paper, cobbled together via graphical software (most word programs would do). Once printed the back sides were painted silver which gives a bit of strength. Add a few holes and streaks of sienna oil paint, and we're done.

Rich, looking forward to your rendition. Great to see CoC going strong into the desert – so it can be done with infantry and in 28mm! ;)

Captain, don't worry too much, my two fellow-bloggers will keep you all busy for sure. For me, that's the joy of real life…

Doc, it can indeed!  i find the desert to be the "purest" of environments as it really is unforgiving.  You really need to work through the phases and remember your training.  Get it right and you're okay, get it wrong and you're hung out to dry!

All good fun.

Rich

The sands of Sahara are in the air, so we've felt the need to roll out forces and terrain for our first, erm, 'threesome' at "Chain of Command" in the desert. :D
The battle was hard fought on and off the table with participants playing without refreshments for hours and hours (well, none of us had played the rules for a couple of months and we introduced some new stuff, that took its toll).
A short-ish summary along with a few photos, of course, can be found, as always, on our blog. Here's a small teaser:

I finally took the time to take some pictures of my Warlord Daimler Mk I that I painted up for my Brits. Allow me to show you the cheesies of the pics I took. :D

Thank you, dear Doctor!

I used the Army Painter Skeleton Bone spray as a base. Quite happy with the result as well.

So they slightly yellow taint is how the spray looks or something you 'wash' your way to?!

I'm curious as I'm painting a bit of 8th myself these days.  :D

Oh right... No the colour is a bit lighter than the Daimler. I did wash the whole surface with brown oil paint. The actual hue is more along the lines of the helmet on the barel (although that was also highlighted).

Arg... A picture speaks a thousand words or something or other. I think explaining it by text won't help you. Here you can see the Daimler next to a mini base coated with the same AP spray.

@Captain Blood

Thank you! Your Brits were a big inspiration.

WOW!! :o :o :o

I've just found this thread and I must say, VERY inspirational! My brother and myself have just bought the Perry plastic Afrika Korps/8th Army box sets. I'd love it if our stuff even looked half as good as you guys!
