Hello everyone.
I'm quite keen on making some dark ages scenery, viking houses etc, the main construction material being daub. I've seen people use spackle/filler, depending on which side of the pond you are on, very successfully and I was hoping someone might be able to give me a run down on exactly what type of filler I am looking for and how to apply it. A tutorial would be ace if anyone has done one.

I just use any old ready mixed filler (pound shops are good!) mixed with a little water and PVA glue and then slap the mixture onto the outside of the building in question using a largeish brush. Don't worry about over applying.
My advice is just get a couple of bits of whatever you are using as wall for your houses and start experimenting with recipies.
You can use neat ready mixed filler though it can get quite messy as you'll need to use your fingers for a smooth result.

Just make sure that what ever you're applying it to doesn't flex too much or it'll all come off. For better results mix in some PVA as mentioned above and make sure the surface that you're working on has some key or is at least slightly porous.

I've been applying mine with little painter's spatula, but also with spare bits of card, plastic...eventually used hands. Could also use some sand in, if you'd want that kind of effect.

I have an odd method where I'll water it down and paint it on with a sort of stipple technique, but I always have to do things the hard way, I suppose. You can't water it too much though or else it cracks when dry anyway.

I use waterproof tile grout (ready mixed from Wilkinsons). Being waterproof it already has a good amount of PVA.
