This is a project I've had in my head since 2008 but is only now hitting the bench. I'm really thankful that Fireforge came along and allowed me to work primarily in plastic. The vision is a dozen 'fantasy SS' for WWWII that are part knight and part modern weapons. Any suggestions, tips, or feedback will be most welcome. Things may move a bit slow as my work schedule is demanding. These are the initial and very rough starts. The idea is that I'll use green stuff to dress out the arms as mail. I'm very new to green stuff and I'm worried the arms may be too thick. So I'll be starting slow and as I've plenty of arms and weapons for do-overs.
When paint time comes I'll be looking for some suggestions. And of course I'll be quite careful re: forbidden images.

I guess you have seen this image?
Do a google image search for "fortean_times_316_5.jpg" - I won't link it, due to a big nazi symbol.
It's the cover from Fortean Times #196 (May 2005)
-
I'm looking forward to the progress of this project.

Have you checked out AE-WWII? They have a SS Knights set. It has 1 mounted Knight and one dismounted knight. They are equipped with a mix of plate style armor and "modern" late 1940's German military tech. They have options for swords or sturmgewehr 44. These might be exactly what you are looking for, and could act as prototype for your conversions. They can be found on ebay and many on-line gaming stores. Here's a picture of the mounted version.
-
I've seen the AE-WWII fig and I like it just fine. But my original inspiration was history channel clips of pre-war pageants (presumably staged by Riefensthal) which included some more "classic" Teutonic costume.
So yeah, I'm drawing on those as well as the other posted image (which I'd not seen before)but at it's heart the unit is circa 13th cent knights with STG44s, Panzerfausts, and radio saddle bags.
It'll be my first serious attempt at green stuff. No promise it will go well...
-
Can't wait to see what you come up with. Please post some more W.I.P. photos as you go.

Things are going a bit slow but I do have some WIP updates. The struggle for me right now is laying mail armour over WF factory plastic arms. I'm no expert on greenstuff and the WF arms, though a fine scale for what they are, are too thick after the greenstuff goes on I think. On the MG42 gunner the left arm is mostly an armature with just the WF left hand. In that case I think I made a mistake in building up from the armature to the mail in one go.
I'm thinking I'll start over on the arms using primarily hands and wire armatures only but building up in layers. I've got plenty of arms and plenty of weapons so it's only a loss of time. I'll call it experience. It is WIP, so the idea is (assuming I don't start over) is the right arms get the same mail armour treatment.
The sniper I'm happy with. In his case I'm just keeping the shirt sleeves rationalizing that mail sleeves hinder sharp shooting.

I like where you are going with this.

Watching with interest.
:D

These should look awesome when finished!
-
No pics today but I am making progress. As I mentioned I've switched to plastic hands and weapons connected to the torsos by wire armatures. The posing is going much smoother I think. I'm measuring the armatures against other plastic arms - hopefully I won't end up with a bunch of freak knights with 3m long arms ;) I've got one knight throwing a cluster charge right handed and holding his STG44 in his left hand and another shouldering a panzerschrek in progress. I plan to finalize those poses and post tomorrow night.
I've chopped the arms off the one with the helm and are re-doing them with wire armatures. May have a new pic of him as well if things go fast.
-
Crikey!
A sniper firing from a charging horse?!?
He must be bloody good!
Keep up the good work.

Does anyone have a picture of the AE WWII Knight dismounted? I'd like one for a project and found a place that sells him separate, but I can't find any pictures of him.
-
This is a photo of the green. I did a search for AE-WWII on TGN it was on the second page of the search results. I have the metal double pack, but they haven't been assembled yet. It looks like a pretty close match.

Thanks FATROC, my Google-fu is weak.
-
Got a few more poses done - so far any hour of work on the project has been quite productive but the number of hours is not what I'd hoped.

Here's the officer, I'm pretty happy with him, the idea is the left hand is casting a spell. When I get to the green stuff stage I'll add a bit of flame to the hooves. At paint stage the horse becomes a nightmare.

Opinions needed: specifically, should I or should I not add the modern equipment (gas mask canister, bread bag, entrenching tool) to the figures? Also, for those w modern weapons, what do you think of their carrying shields on their backs?

+1 for adding the "modern" German kit to the knights and their mounts. I like the idea of placing some of the shields on their backs.
-
A bit of an update on the slow pace of updates on this project. I've not been satisfied with either of my methods for posing arms. I'm going to try a third method - converting the crossbow arms from the Teutonic foot set. Unfortunately due to my current residence in South Africa I won't have access to the sprues until I return to the US for a visit at Christmas. Thus this project is essentially shelved until next year.
I'd always intended to do a foot version of each knight anyway but I was unable to get the sprues I needed during my last home visit.
-
Ok, long time gone but this project has not been abandoned. I did make it home and was able to get some Templar foot, some additional parts, and some fresh green stuff. I now have 12 riders and mounts primed and ready to paint. I added army kit to everyone and have shields on most.
My thoughts on painting the horse clothes (what do you call the cloth barding on Teutonic horses?) is to go with an oak leaf or peadot camo and a different camo on the riders' tabards. For the shields I'm going back and forth between panzer grey w symbols and a three-tone pattern (yellow, green, brown). Armour will be metallic, horses black w red eyes and no markings. Original vision was to do all the fabrics white and black symbols but with forbidden images in place of historical Teutonic icons.
Any suggestions or warnings will be appreciated. I'll be painting soon w pics to follow not long after.
-
Nice to see its still in the works.
-
Ok, here are the long delayed pics - WIP obviously:

A selection of shields, I'm not favoring the panzer grey but I like both the others - thoughts?

lol you bad man. These are starting to come together.
-
Looking great. Keep it coming. The camo on the horses looks very good.
-
They are crazy good! Expect imitators.
-
They look very cool. It's an unusual concept but it's executed to perfection.

Half way to finished: six of twelve knights ready for basing. Basing won't happen until I return home who knows when.

Love the colour choice and execution. Look forward to them charging into battle againt a horde of WWWII zombies.
-
Mental but in a good way ;D 8)

This plan is so cunning you could brush your teeth with it! They would absolutely look great charging some WW2 zombies!!
-
Looking awesome!
-
Fantastic work! I particularly like the camouflage paintwork.
-
And... they're done. At least the mounted versions. Foot versions will be converted once I get the sprues over from the US. Probably in a month or so. I need the break anyway. By the end this project pretty much stopped being fun and getting to finish was more like work.

I had missed this thread, somehow. What a splendidly strange idea - and very nicely executed.
-
Bonkers!! And totally awesome as well. ;D
Knights with Panzerfausts and camo horse housings :o :o :o
Really well executed conversions and painting - but still totally bonkers ;)
-
Stunning work :o

Fantastic!

Wow, nice conversion work, and a great idea very well executed.

Great stuff!

:o :o :o ....have just discovered this thread and....wow !....really excellent model making....great paint job....plus totally and utterly bonkers o_o
...Need to see them all as a group...in situ...i.e. battling whoever it is that radar helmet wearing camo knights on horseback have it in for....will now have to lay down for a bit in the meantime
-
You win. Best conversions ever and the painting is totally boss as well.
radar helmet wearing camo knights on horseback
The Moody Blues missed their mark. ;)

My next band name... Radar Helmet!
-
Thanks to all for all the compliments. I'll try get a group shot but I don't have any basing materials or any terrain or opponents with me. I'm very far from home on a work assignment and won't be back to my full hobby supplies for many months. These guys are primarily opponents for the players in my WWWII rpg using savage worlds. So a variety of pulpy PCs, mostly British, with two platoons of Commados in support.
-
Abbner, your RPG group is very lucky to have you!
Those will be some serious wild-cards.
-
There are 5-6 veteran level wcs in the party + over 30 commando extras and the commandos stats very much show my personal fascination with the commandos. Even so taking on 12 WCs would he a herculean task. Probably only the officer will be a WC and the rest tough extras. Don't want to say too much as I believe at least two of my players follow this thread (which is OK).
The back story is they are from another dimension brought in by Thule society mystics. So they've got a few supernatural advantages. The gimic for the nightmare will be especially dangerous.
-
Always a pleasure to read about some quality Savage Worlds gaming. :D

Here's the start on the next unit - monster SS assault platoon. One squad werewolves with STG44, one squad fiendish SS w STG44, fiendish/vampire command group, and one squad 3 tripod MG42 w fiendish crews. Still collecting the figs.
Quick and overdue credit to TAG, JTFM, and Bolt Action all of which one way or another provided parts for the conversion and excellent service in the process.

wulfen #3 STG44 - not fond of the fig or the pose so I slapped on the blood (which I rarely do) to try and draw the eye. Not my favorite.

Outstanding work once more :-* .....am so glad I discovered this thread....will be following your progress with great interest
-
Here's the first half-squad of fiendish SS. These are all West Wind but I weapon swapped for some proper STG44s and PzFausts and a teller mine.
I'm out of primed figs but I have the platoon command ready to prime but with winter temps and light they'll have to wait for the weekend.
