Title: The House of Spoons (The Arena Floor) 15/10
Post by: Mason on 26 August 2013, 08:52:47 PM
I have my first batch of slaves, all ready to be trained up for the arena.

I have one problem, though....I have two Retarius and can only see myself using one.
So: What can I covert the other one into without ordering any more figures?

I am looking for a simple conversion without too much difficulty, but do not mind a little bit of green stuff work.

The figure I have to base it on is the bottom one here:

http://oldglory15s.com/Retarius-GLAD3.htm

A nice and convenient pose for the removal of the net, at least.
 ;)

I'd say Laquearius would be the obvious choice.

Replace the net with a lasso/rope...and the trident with a simpler spear?  Other than that, general opinion is that he was a type of retiarius?

Agree totally with Elbows, although there will not be specific rules for Laquearius in Blood on the Sands.

For a more useful type, personally I think he would make a passable Hoplomachus, but would require much more work!

The net could be replaced with a spear, his shield arm would probably need to be lowered and a small shield added, and a helm added of course. His leg and arm guards appear to be ok but would probably require a little green stuff.

He could look something like this in NO time at all.  ;)

The Hoplomachus would be my suggestion also. :)

A Lanista of your considerable talents should be able to Produce him in no time. ;) :D

I love me some Hoplomachi (though I'm becoming less and less enthused as the Skill 5 "Negrix" continues to cut a bloody swath through my ludus...).

Hoplomachus all the way.....  Cant wait to see how it comes out!

Thanks for the Laquearius idea, Elbows, it is an interesting looking option, but a little too close to the Retiarus for my liking.
I think I will go for the Hoplomachus option as it is different to everything else I have.
Thanks for the suggestion feellas, much appreciated.
 :D

Now to get the little grey cells working and get this show on the road.
Research time, methinks.
 ;)

Good man - can't wait to see him!! If you have any queries on the "get up" - ask away.

I have had a butchers at a few images on the web and there seems to be a little difference on each.

I was going to use the Hoplomachus from this site as inspiration:

http://www.durolitum.co.uk/gladtypes.html

Does that seem right to you?

Great site you have found there, but the helmet on the first Provocatur looks like something out of the Muppets lol

'It's time to play the music,
It's time to light the lights....'

 lol

Did think it looked a little strange myself, but considering that they are pictures of actual Gladioli re-enactors, I am more worried for the fella inside that headgear!

Pictures shall be forthcoming, fellas.
I have done the padding on the legs and most of the work on the left greave.
The helmet is about 50% finished, the rim is sorted and basic shape in place.
Toying with the idea of an open-faced helm, though, as the figure has a well sculpted boat race and it seems a shame to cover it.....maybe a ripped off face guard/visor on the base.

Busy with 1:1 scale stuff for the next few days, hope to finish this fella on Sunday/Monday.

Piccies after then.

Well, it has been over a month since I rather stupidly said:

hope to finish this fella on Sunday/Monday.

Piccies after then.
 :D

......but I can say that he is almost done now and just needs his spear finishing off and the face of his shield added (Bibbles is donating that at SELWG on Sunday).

So maybe this 'Sunday/Monday'......?

Maybe a piccie before then for a WIP shot.....

Will post some piccies when Bibbles puts the dictionary away... ::)

Right, here are some (dodgy) WIP piccies of the Hoplomachus converted from the bottom Retiarus in this picture:

http://oldglory15s.com/Retarius-GLAD3.htm

The thing on the floor next to him is his left hand holding the inside of his shield.
This will be attached when I get the rest of the shield from Bibbles on Sunday.

After that, all I have to do is slip a spear into the slot in his right hand and I can slap some paint on him.

Here's hoping it works for you fellas, as I hope he will look quite good when he is finished.

Very nice work. Never would dare to sculpt all those strips and straps.
Pose looks good, too. Does he get a face mask?

Cheers, Doc!
The straps are not that difficult actually, they were much easier than the helmet.

As for a face mask: Not this time.
I know that most images of Hoppo's show them in masks, but I like the face on this sculpt and the Hoppo in Blood on the Sands is classed as a 'light' gladiator and I thought I should leave him as unencumbered as possible.

That did make me chuckle, Steve.
I may have to set up a piccie of that just for a laugh.

Just to wind Bibbles up I am going to announce that I have finished the arena floor/hex mat thingy and I will post a piccie to prove it later (or even tomorrow if it turns out that I am too lazy to get it done tonight....).

Turns out that I was too lazy after all.

It gave Bibbles a chance to have a funny turn, though, so that was probably a good thing in the end.
Let him get it out of his system and all that.... ::)

Here is the arena/hex mat/thingy upon which all my gladioli will either meet a sad or beg for forgiveness,,,,,

The true colour is somewhere between the two pictures. One was taken with flash and one without.

It was hand carved out of acrylic by Bibbles using his lightsaber and is a very fine thing indeed.

Or it was until I messed it up by slapping stuff on it.....
.
If you want one for yourself, you had better bother him via PM as I do not think that they are in the shop.
 ;)

I was half expecting marble floors for the mighty and (in)famous House of Spoons... oh well, I quess sand arena is easier to maintain :)

Nice work on it Paul. Now, IIRC you won't have any walls to the arena but will there be any columns and so on that might be placed for different matches?

And what is the hex-size of that board?

Marble floors???
The House of Spoons does not have that kind of dosh to splash about.

As for walls: I am tempted to do at least one side of the arena in future, with a spectators box etc. Columns are another possibility.

Bibbles has two designs as well.
This is the rectangular variety.
Take a look at this thread for the oval version:

They are both very nice and highly recommended.
