Title: French pike c.1513
Post by: Stuart on 27 August 2013, 12:15:10 PM
This has been a while in the making but i'm finally happy to say that I have my first French unit of Louis XII's northern army of 1513.

I've posted some earlier WIP's here in an attempt to try and get the overall feel and look of the figures right but have a look at this blog post and let me know what you think;

Best Regards

So the captain probably is Jean III de Bournonville, knight, lord of Bournonville and Leaunes and colonel of a 1000 foot under Louis XII. He died in 1521 or 1539.  The ancestor who died at Agincourt was Alléaume de Bournonville.

like the quotes on the blog  ;) but could not post there

Thank you Carl

I've added the information to the blog - was it easy to find? i have a few more nobles who I'm interested in but I keep drawing a blank.

Thanks Carl

Here are the two nobles i'm struggling with, I know they were assigned to defend Therouanne but other than their company sizes that's it;

Compagnie du seigneur de Sercu : 500 hommes de pieds
Compagnie du seigneur de Hely : 500 hommes de pieds

I don't know their names or heraldry.

Also, am i right in guessing that 'hommes de pieds' is infantry?

Just read the blog entry, as usual the writing is as entertaining as the pictures. Have stashed away the link to the French heraldry site for future reading.The unit is brilliant, love the relaxed at ease poses you have created.

Hello Stuart

hommes à pieds is infantry. Spelling at that time still fluctuates E.G; at the siege of Therouanne you have the compagnie of m. de Grutere is actually de Gruuthuse family from Bruges.
so monsieur de Sercu is probably monsieur de Sercus (a local picard nobleman) arms : silver with a sable lion (contourné = looking in the other direction) with a label of points gules

monsieur de Hely is Guillaume de Pisseleu, lord of Heily (also a local Picard nobleman) and colonel of 1000 men under Louis XII. His daughter Anne was a mistress of François I who created her Duchess of Etampes. Arms silver 3 lions gules

hope this helps

Carl
