Title: A new hope for chewing gum minis
Post by: Snafu on 01 September 2013, 10:05:43 AM
Recently I was strolling around at a local flea market, when  I heard a faint whispering coming from a box filled with some dozens of plastic minis.

There was a bunch of little red guys calling for a new life in a little diorama,  so I took them home.

These are the guys. Seeems that in their former life they were some kind of gimmicks you could buy way back in the 1970s together with a package of chewing gum. They belong to a set of figures from "Asterix" the famous comic series .  One of them obviously is a veteran of war, having lost his left leg, so he doesn't look very pleased.

This is one of them compared to some other minis.

So these are some first impressions.

Fantastic! I looked at the first pic before reading and the name 'Asterix' pinged into my head straight away. Nifty wee models, and great house.

eventually the tree house of Troubadix the bard.

In english he's called Cacofonix. :) What are the names of the others in different countries, I wonder?

Here in Canada, Asterix was a way to get us English kids reading French. I've never read him in English!

Gotta love it. I once suggested Asterix as a Lego range, but sadly it didn't pan out.

You've done a sterling job on the Centurion and the house. Looking forward to see more. :-)

Here is a little treehouse I made for the Bard Cacophonix (Troubadix in german version).
Please have patience, because my abilities as a painter of minis are, uhm, very basic. :'(

Great stuff, Snafu, great stuff  :-*
Love what you have done so far.

Should have some of those minis myself somewhere, was a huge Asterix-fan back in my youth ;)

GREAT STUFF!!!

Exactly! Cut my teeth on Tintin and Asterix. Not a bad way to get started in comics, French, or nerdly pursuits.

Those houses are the business  :-* :-* :-*

The figure looks a lot like one I bought a few years ago, they were a lot cheaper then (I got them from a guy in Spain) than these currently on evilbay

Work in Progress for another house, the home of Fullyautomatix, the village smith. Maybe a little bit to small, but I haven't got more room on my terrain base.

I wonder how these size up with the ones that were done in metal? They look like they might be pretty close.

Great work on the houses!  :-*

Didn't think the figures would paint up this nicely. I used to have a load of them, but gave them to a forum member as freebies with another trade after I completed my collection of the metal ones.

They are of mixed sizes, but for the most part about the same height or slightly higher than the metals, but more bulky.

A couple of the more slender ones work ok with the metals to complement them. Or you can get the expensive metal Pixi mini range, which is the exact same size as the Metal Magic ones. I have several of those too (including the village and pirate ship, but I don't want to think of the cost).

I have a bucket of those... maybe I should try out my painting skills on a few.

The bard is called Trubadurix in Denmark (trubadur = Danish for troubadour).

Well, I have to admit, that my first version of the house of Automatix/Cetautomatix/Fullyautomatix ... is way to small and it also is only one half of it, according to some other drawings in the comics. So I made a new one.  Let's see how it comes out painted. Uhm, how to make the chimney.....Work in progress...

So this is the final result. Not exactly ike the original in the comic, but I coudn't resist to add some more details. The roof of the house is removable, so maybe there willbe some interior later on....

Really nice house, and very good pj.

I must say, though, that the mold line on that mini hurts my eyes  :)

Have you considered basing the minis?

Well, the mould lines are very ugly, but these are no professional minis, youst cheap giveaways within a package of chewing gum, so you can't expect top-level quality. I don't play with the minis, just use them for my dioramas, so maybe I will just glue them on the scenery without a base.

Ah, OK.

I know the minis quite well, I collected a bucket of them back in the 70's  :)
