Loving it... :-*
What rules changes did you make for superior Medieval archers etc?
Darrell.

Great AAR :)
Jason.

Thanks !!!
Superior Medieval archers? may be in England but not in Sweden;)
I let the Allmoge (militia with polearms etc. and crossbow/bow) to shoot with half its bases as missile troops and the Mounted knechts (Mercenary soldiers with polearms etc. and crossbow that shoot with half missile ranges but you may dissmount them if you want during the game to get ordinary shooting range) may shoot with all bases
So I don´t deploy large units of pure missile troops as I haven´t read of any real historical evidence that they was deplyed of their own here in scandinavia.
Best regards Michael

Did they not have longbows? It isn't an area of Late Med. history that I know an awful lot about?

Ah, I didn't realise that the Swedes didn't use large formations of bows. It would be interesting to read about it- but then I may have to learn Swedish(?) :o

Hi Darrell
Glad that you are interested in some medieval Swedish history:)
We did use longbows but not in massed formation, the allmoge units did use them mixed with crossbows and polearms, by time the crossbow become the main shooting weapon, suppose it was easier to learn to use a crossbow, easyer to use them in the Swedish woods and had a better penetration of the Union knights armour when ambushed at short range in the deep swedish forests...
Unfortunally not much written in English about this period of the swedish history.
These 3 Osprey books are the only one I have found that gives some information about Scandinavian warfare.
Osprey - Men At Arms 399 Medieval Scandinavian Armies (2) 1300-1500
Osprey - Men At Arms 396 Medieval Scandinavian Armies (1) 1100-1300
Osprey - Men At Arms 436 The Scandinavian Baltic Crusades 1100-1500
Here you can download a short piece, in english, about "Murder and Execution within the Political Sphere
in Fifteenth-century Scandinavia" (https://www.google.se/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CEcQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fjournals.lub.lu.se%2Findex.php%2Fscandia%2Farticle%2Fdownload%2F1134%2F919&ei=kLQtUrbCEIqG4gT8r4DIAQ&usg=AFQjCNEAKu8NMAN4wLwSRkFxgJ00JnzFdg&sig2=d-8-M1nePRmQ25kGCLBxxg&bvm=bv.51773540,d.bGE) by one of Swedens most renowed Historical Professors that have written several book on the subject, but only in Swedish...
Here are a drawing from 1500 by the German mercenary Paul Dolstein of some Swedish allmoge soldiers in mixed formation. By 1500 the crossbow was the main shooting weapon

So, pretty much how the bow was used (disregarding Hastings) in most north Western European armies until the 'English' model was copied by the French and Burgundians etc.

Shame really. I'd love to read about it. I'm finally learning French after living with a French lass for 12 years!! [She's ecstatic! :)], The idea being that I don't keep hassling her into translating certain texts!! Shame on me! :D

I've got the last book, it isn't a bad read really- as you know Ospreys can be a bit hit and miss.

I'll certainly try to find the time to read it. should be very interesting 8)
