Title: Arctic Adventures: The Frost Expedition
Post by: jet on 16 September 2013, 01:58:24 AM
I started an Arctic-themed Pulp Alley project back in April but Spring and Summer got in the way. Now that we are back into the Fall (aka Painting Season) I've re-started the project with a vengeance. I thought that the original thread was a little stale ( http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=53227.0 ) so I started over.

Here they are in all their glory, the Frost Expedition along with their league roster (I know all the Pulp Alley geeks like to check out abilities and perks). I decided to stick with the Company of Heroes perk and to field two sidekicks. We probably won't be starting our Arctic campaign yet as we are just about to start our own Eastern European adaptation of Perilous Island. In other words, I may make some minor changes to the line-up before it all goes down.

(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq189/JasonFromNF/Frost_01_zpsf32741dd.jpg) (http://s446.photobucket.com/user/JasonFromNF/media/Frost_01_zpsf32741dd.jpg.html)

(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq189/JasonFromNF/Untitled_zpsd9a12a34.jpg) (http://s446.photobucket.com/user/JasonFromNF/media/Untitled_zpsd9a12a34.jpg.html)

Here are some plot points to get us started. With the exception of the Fuel Dump, everything is made from plastic GW leftovers from years back.

(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq189/JasonFromNF/Frost_02_zps03a3b334.jpg) (http://s446.photobucket.com/user/JasonFromNF/media/Frost_02_zps03a3b334.jpg.html)

I also plan on making some buildings for an Arctic base camp. Unlike previous buildings I've made, I decided to skip all of the fancily-trimmed doors and windows so that I could turn the buildings out quickly when I get in mass production mode. I am wondering whether or not I should glue some snow on the roofs, window sills, and around the bases. I think it would look better but leaving it as is would allow me to use these buildings for non-Arctic settings as well.

(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq189/JasonFromNF/Frost_03_zps99817033.jpg) (http://s446.photobucket.com/user/JasonFromNF/media/Frost_03_zps99817033.jpg.html)

Anyone recognize the Yeti re-paint? I'll use him in any scenario that requires a Terror. C'mon Tex! Right between the eyes!

(http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq189/JasonFromNF/Frost_04_zps16296d93.jpg) (http://s446.photobucket.com/user/JasonFromNF/media/Frost_04_zps16296d93.jpg.html)

I plan on making some larger outcrops (much like Dave's and Mila's) so that characters can climb up a series of levels to get to the top. Obviously. mine would be white glacial formations. I also need to figure out how to do water features that look like openings to the ocean below. I had pondered picking up some of the GW plastic craters and modifying them. After that I'll be looking at more buildings and perhaps some primitive structures. My main opponent has snow beasts painted and also owns Copplestone cavemen which would make for an awesome Arctic lost world setting.

Anyway, now that I'm back to painting and modelling I'll keep you posted.

Wow these look great!

I will be swiping these ideas as I have the same bits floating in the bin waiting for a use.  ;)

Maybe a dusting of baking soda or some other cheap, easily disposed of white powder for your arctic games, and when brushed off leave your swell buildings for temperate use.

I can't wait to see them in action!
Thanks for posting.

I'm happy to see Frost is still alive! We had feared the worst.  ;D

Its exciting to see the new bits you've added to your arctic setting. It makes me want to build some arctic tiles --- but I've been promising myself a City for some time, so it will have to wait.

THANKS for sharing.

Have to agree, some snow on the roof! Possibly on a separate bit of thin stock something so you can remove the snow pile when not applicable in the scenario?

Ooh nice theme.

I'd just sprinkle the dry "snow" on the roof/board

Nice project  8)

Actually you could make an overhanging 'hat' out of card and putty - maybe secured with magnets  - that is covered with snow.

Very nicely painted figures and a great setting.   :)    This Pulp Alley stuff is getting more and more attractive.

Well, seems to be an overwhelming vote for adding snow to the buildings. I think I will. I will be making more cardboard buildings down the road so I can always make stuff for my temperate board when the time comes.

Nothing to worry about Dave. The crew of the Auk spent the Spring doing some ice-breaking down the coast of Labrador and Quebec. After a month of maintenance and restoration in Bonavista they should be ready to head north in search of the Derby Expedition. Then the trouble will start...  ;)

Thanks for the encouragement gentlemen. My plan is to have the terrain and mini collection filled out so that we can start playing by or before Xmas. Before we start an Arctic campaign I have more pressing matters to contend with. Captain Grant and the Liberators have to track down Lady Elaine Darrow and help protect her from evil cultists while trying to find her missing father. More on that soon.

You're right Dave. Especially since we've adapted the setting and scenarios so that we'll actually be playing Perilous Mountain! I don't think I shall say anything else. We are waiting on some scenery items and some miniatures so it will be a few weeks before we get started.

I suspect this task will be impossible for those do-gooder Liberators....Little does Grant know but Vladimir Vrex also has interest in Lady Darrow. Her father knows the were-bouts of a substantial deposit of Perilium. The last compound needed for the Crimson Professor's latest creation! Nothing will stop Vrex from locating it!

Smashing stuff!  :-*  Perhaps you could have interchangeable roofs, one with snow, one without, that can be swapped out at need?

you could try batting (pillow stuffing) or stretched out cotton balls for snow.  cheap, easy clean up.  when my kids were into thomas the train, that's how we did a christmas set up.

or go with the hollywood effect and use instant potato flakes; but i have no experiences with it though.

Have you guys changed your rosters at all? I can't remember if you working in any of the Perilous Island perks/abilities?

My main "contributions/feedback" to the Perilous Island supplement was the Unearthly ability, the Reanimated ability, and the Animals Perk. The rest of my input was fairly minor.

The Liberators have had some changes, but mostly through experience gain. They now have 40 Rep, and my leader and my sidekick each have an additional ability (i.e. 7 XP). Captain Grant started with Fierce, Hardened Veteran, and Rugged. He's since added Marksman to the mix so he's something of a force to be reckoned with. Although, Tenz's leader of his snow beasts league did manage to take him down last game. (5d12 Brawl? Is that even necessary?!). The only wierd ability in my league is Blast Fire. I used it on Monique (one of the allies) to represent her submachine gun firing on full auto.

At this stage, Tenz's league has stayed much as it did when he started. For the campaign he's using Dr. Vrex (Leader), Boris (arse-kicking sidekick), a pudgy little ally (like a pulp era Igor), and two Skelebots allies). We each have 11 slots because of Rep gain. I suggested using the Noblesse Perk if he ever goes with an all Skelebot league. Obviously, the only way to finish off a skelebot would be to pull off the back-plate and haul out the Radium Power Core.  ;D

hey dave - will the new Pulp Alley vehicle rules include snow mobiles?  even though, they may not have been in use around the time of "classical" pulp eras.

Very cool! I was wondering if you guys were keeping track of your campaign rewards. You're doing good.

I think Mila's Pulp Girl league is up to 38 Rep and has earned a total of 8 XP. She spent 4 points to add Eagle-Eye to Pulp Girl, and 1 point (Follower) to make her terrier Fierce (up to 3d6 Brawl, err... Bite). And now she has 3 XP burning a hole in her pocket...  :o

We are already planning to include dog sleds, so maybe I can find room for snowmobiles as well. I think they're more of a 60's+ sort of contraption, but I can certainly see a mad scientist outfitting his followers with early snowmobiles.  :D

HAVE FUN

i checked and was surprised that snowmobiles were in WWII - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NKL-26 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1949-Bombardier-B12.jpg .  even though these were more like armored tanks with skis.  but yeah on having a mad scientist secret project and this can be for used for ideas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Coanda_snow_sleigh.jpg

gotta love wikipedia.

Really like your Frost Expedition.  Beautifully painted figures.  You need some more animals other than that Yeti.

Now I know you said Arctic but penguins are just too much fun!

mega miniatures had some seals but I do not know whether they or some other has them.
nikolai miniatures had some seals, igloos, kayak etc. they are in resin in 1/72 scale but still usable ...

see some seals :

jet,

The buildings were made for me by my friend Hugh.  The roofs are made from corrugated cardboard but the end walls appear to be fasioned from a carton lid.

pistolpete,

Hugh again and he actually made two as he had several ideas and could not decide which looked better.

(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss7/Sakura121049/Winter%20War/sub2s.jpg) (http://s556.photobucket.com/user/Sakura121049/media/Winter%20War/sub2s.jpg.html)

(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss7/Sakura121049/Winter%20War/sub1s.jpg) (http://s556.photobucket.com/user/Sakura121049/media/Winter%20War/sub1s.jpg.html)

The main components are from a game called "Mousetrap" and more of that corrugated cardboard.

The Pinguinjagers are the only sculpts that I have ever commissioned as I could not resist the humourous idea of neat little rows of trained penguins greeting their German masters in the frozen wastes of NeuSchwabenland.  They were actually used as Victory Point counters in a Public Participation game where two teams raced to find a crashed German flying saucer.  Much hilarity ensued and the victors were rewarded with a Penguin biscuit.

Shipping to Canada is the killer. It's becoming ridiculous trying to get things delivered to Canada from the States.
