Title: Diorama of Doom (FINISHED!)
Post by: Brandlin on 29 September 2013, 10:14:12 PM
Over on the Forum of  Doom the good people of Haslefree Miniatures, Fenris Games, Heresy Miniatures and Black Scorpion run an annual painting competition known as the (unofficial) Diorama of Doom.

This year the theme is: "Pick on someone your own size!"

The competition starts on the 24th September 2013 with submissions due by 24th December. At the start of the competition you are required to submit a photograph of your miniatures to demonstrate that you haven't started to paint them yet!

Here are my starting materials. In total that's 15 miniatures from all four manufacturers, an Old Crow tank, 2 walkers (cough), a skip, loads of brass etch, styrene and other modelling gubbins.

This will be a tongue in cheek scenario featuring two interlinked diorama's - as you might be able to tell from the oddly shaped MDF base.

I can promise a reappearance of Bob and Dave from my DoD 2011 entry "Do you think he'll notice?" (http://brandlin.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/do-you-think-hell-notice-final-pictures.html); and we shall find the inept duo have been sacked from their line marking jobs and have set up their own scrap business!

For scale reference, the base shown here is 80mm diameter lipped resin base from Fenris Games. The overall ellipse shape is 250mm by 160mm (sized to fit on the available display shelves). The MDF is four sheets of 9.5mm thick, cut with a jig saw, sanded on a drum snader and the other pieces routed using the first as a template...

And a little more in the way of interest and levels...

Because I've already bitten off more than I can chew and planning to pain half early, and the other half later is frankly no sodding easier :)

Actually it's much more subtle than that. Either:

a) I have designed a diorama where all fifteen miniatures have been turned into cybernetic organisms from 1970's low budget tv shows.

b) the diorama is an international convention of living statues.

In either case all the miniatures are naturally silver skinned and clothed.

A change of direction.  I have begun modelling the part of the diorama that I am most concerned about!I am relatively comfortable and happy modelling with styrene sheet and resin, but much less experienced with green stuff and organic modelling - 'sculpting'. So hence this is a bit of a step into the unknown for me.

I'm not going to explain why part of this diorama appears to be set in a forest and another in a workshop - I shall leave that to the reveal and the supporting short story...

Well, that took a lot longer than I had hoped.

OK, so I am still not showing you what is in the middle - but it IS finished. If all else fails I can just enter this part of the Diorama in the competition and it'll still qualify. (I don't have the best record for finishing stuff!)

It's oak leaf scatter, from decorplus I think.

No pictures today :(

I put a black spray undercoat on the main model. BUT I forgot to mask off a couple of areas that should have remained clear. So I am thoroughly hacked off. Anyone know how to get black acrylic spray off clear polystyrene sheet without scratching or melting it?

I then spent the afternoon designing some graphics for decals .... Which I'm actually very happy with!
Title: Re: Diorama of Doom
Post by: Mr. Peabody on 24 November 2013, 08:07:25 PM
Sorry to hear about the masking woes....

Try amonia... Window cleaner or similar. Acrylic don't like it, no sir. Follow up with a 'soft' plastic (a bit of styrene off-cut should do it) scraper to clear off the softened paint. Good luck. This is an awesome entry Mr. B.
Title: Re: Diorama of Doom
Post by: former user on 24 November 2013, 08:46:44 PM
don't scrape!
You can remove acrylic with acetone, but with very soft tissue - and then there is a special polishing paste for helmet vizors.
But this will be a pain in the ass - I'd rather replace the clear acrylic, should go easier

Thank you.

I'm certainly getting there slowly!

HELP PLEASE

The black edges of the various pits are going to be hazard striped. Anyone got any advice on how to paint them in so that all the stripes are the same width and angle. There's about 18" of them to do, and I think they'll stand out badly unless they are very even.

I've been thinking of making some form of mask out of styrene to spray yellow through but that seems very fiddly for the various different locations.

Make the mask out of Tamiya masking tape. You can get it very thin, and it is very reusable. That way you could airbrush it...  ;)

Thanks grant. I'd considered using nod cutting masking tape but I'm not sure I'm going to get it even. Tamiya tape would at least always be the right thickness.

I'll have to experiment...

Well I do not know what your diorama will look like but I learnt something today, thank you  :)
I believed I understand English but …"hasard" means random in French so I wondered why "random" stripes would need the same width and angle…  OOOh I did some research and I understood my mistake.

ARRRRGHHHHHH!!!!!

I just ran out of yellow airbrush paint!!!

Moral of the story - when airbrushing a large item like a gantry crane, make sure you give it a good undercoat - BUT NOT BLACK!

I messed up and put a black primer on the gantry crane and after about 6 coats of airbrush yellow it was still a greeny colour (yellow has notoriously bad coverage and is very translucent). At the weekend i went an bought a 'sand' coloured flat matt humbrol acrylic primer and hit it with that which is a FAR superior base colour for the yellow. I've just hit it with the first of the yellow top coats and it is covering soooo much better - and then i RAN OUT OF PAINT!

Does anyone know of a model shop in the Warrington/Chester/Worsley areas (that's where i am working this week) that carried Vallejo Model Air paints????

HELP!

So, it all starts to come together ...

(Albeit after two hours of winding cable and linking chain and fiddling and more fiddling and cursing and yet more fiddling ... you get the idea!)

So, now I just have the skip to fill, a dozen figures to paint and the "big reveal".

Looking good.

Sorry about this - but I have only just read your plea for help with Hazard stripes.

(I know that you have now done then - and they look great, but)
Try laying strips of Tamiya tape one next to another and when fully covered, remove every other strip. Always paint the Yellow first and the Black (actually dark Grey) next.

You can get transfers/Decals of hazard tape - One of the large aircraft carriers has it on the decks.

Like I said, looking goood.

Well, I get that the fellows from your previous diorama are now scrap dealers, but I'm not sure where the jedi ewok being shot at in a terrarium comes into it.  ;D

Er... Perhaps as an energy source?
Does ewok shooting warm the planet?  :D
Perhaps the full potential of a home terrarium with a jedi ewok in it, has not yet been fully recognized as a modern energy source?  lol

the Dioramam of Doom competition is more about story telling than just painting and modelling. Think of the two sections of the diorama as "Cause and Effect"

Clearly an insufficient degree of procrastination has lead to an increased factor of quality output.

I am wondering: Does no-one make ready-printed adhesive hazard stripe bands?

I'm sure it would be possible to print them on labels, then cut to the desired with/length, but I would think that there is a market for 'pro' made stuff??

Hassle free make some. But I wanted to paint them because the stuck on stuff doesn't look so good to me.

Now I've seen the figures painted up, I have to say your figure painting is as good as your diorama building and detailing- bloody superb! I'm envious of your talents and your speed. Looking forward to seeing this all come together in one piece.

Oh, and by the way ...

I just finished....

My back is killing me - i've done around 38 hours in this seat over the last three days, and I am thoroughly sick of the sight of yellow paint and the smell of superglue.

Episode VII - The Last Pedestrian.

A week last Tuesday, not far from a certain forest moon...

The Emperor is dead. The once mighty galactic empire is in turmoil; it's elite forces destroyed by a rag tag bunch of amateur insurgents and knee-high plushies armed only with native spears and slip hazards. The catastrophic failings of the mechanised walkers were clearly exposed.

With the death of the last of the Sith, scientific rationalism rather than a quasi-religious kratocracy, is in resurgence.

Assuming command of the remains of the empire military machine, in a ramshackle maintenance hanger, the new leader, Kim Wrong-Un, commands that all remaining bipedal units are retrofitted with a more proven motive method...

Lol. It's in pride of place in my display cabinet! It's only the second diorama I've ever finished.
I had this idea for about three years, so I HAD to get it done so I could think of something else.

Not sure what's next...

I like doing something with some humour, and taking the piss out of the genres in games.

I was thinking about a space marine with power fist trying to open a particularly tough jam jar...
