Ave!
Thanks to unnamed former lanista and LAF member, I Antonius Ignavus Maximus, the not-so-well-to-do patrician, have jumped the ludus bandwagon and gotten myself yet deeper in the lead pile by acquiring quite a number of gladiatores to gain rich and fame for my name and ludus as well.
Here's a pic of the bunch, Antonius Ignavus Maximus can be seen in the upper right corner.

I guess next not so logical step is to make myself an arena... Hopefully James will have those hex boards available soonish :D

Good to see another Lanista enter the fray.
PM James, the arenas are available now. ;D
-
That's a good selection of gladiators. Should keep you busy for a while. :D
Worth dropping James a Pm, the arenas are a very worthwhile investment. ;)
-
I have arenas :D
cheers
James

I have arenas :D
Don't worry, they do a cream for that now, a few applications and it'll clear up. :D

lol I think those are the fighting words...
James, do send details of the groundworks :)
-
You have your hands full there, Antti!
:o
Looking forward to seeing your progress with this.
:)
As for James' offerings: His hex-board thingy is really nice and highly recommended..... whereas his other declaration: I guess he should keep these things to himself and take the good Doctor's advice on that one.
;)

I have first one of the lot painted, will post pics tomorrow... need to have proper daylight to make half-decent pics of a shoddy paintjob :)
-
What a great collection of lead there and all Foundry me thinks - some of my most favorites minis in that lot
Looking forward to seeing them painted - good luck with them all and welcome to the madness. ;D
-
@Furt: Yes, quite a bunch of them and indeed, all Foundry. Thanks go to that unnamed LAF member for the whole lot. I try to get at least four painted so will be able to have a small contest with friends at some point in the close future :)
Here's first one at his current state, still need to tidy him a bit here and there but not being a good painter he isn't going to get that much better from this level. I call him Robustus :) Still missing a shield... or maybe I give him a second blade?

That is a great start, mate.
:-*
If you are looking for a shield for him, wouldn't a standard Roman shield work just fine?
I am sure that the good folks on this board could help.

Many thanks Mason, I hope to improve my skills bit by bit, or rather fighter by fighter :)
I have shields etc for the whole lot of them, just can't decide what to arm him with :)
-
He's nice - well done. Are you using any washes or an Army Painter dip?

He is certainly a Murmillo (and one of my favorite Foundry miniatures), so I'd arm him with a scutum for sure.
Looking forward to more from Antonius Ignavus Maximus. :)
-
A quick google search for images of the common gladiator types and you'll see precisely what the armaments were (or the trends we've discovered through research).
When I gathered my first models/rules, I compiled a folder for each time, and stuffed it with as many images as I could find on google. The foundry minis ship with a bunch of weird agent shields, so I went about making up most of my own to be slightly more appropriate.
Myrmillo
Thraex
Secutor
Provocator
Scissor
Hoplomachus
Retiarius
Dimachaerus
Arbelas
Laquearius
Eques
etc.

Thanks chaps.
There's some washes on the mini, maybe I should have dipped it more and better :) Lets see what I can do once I have given the shield.
Good list of different types, I did google some of those earlier but maybe I will not stay within the historical archetypes as Foundry has done :D

This chap will be next one under the brush. I did some cuts to his right thigh, right side of chest and left shoulder with scalpel blade so he will have some gore to show the right fighting spirit depicted by the gladiators of my ludus :)

I did try to get correct latin version for calling him Scarred in Latin but google translate gives me Oraque... any Latin speakers out there who can confirm this?
-
Good start, pocoloco. Maybe you could use a darker wash for definition?
Re your question, cicatricosus is a literal translation – if not the snappiest title. You could also go with the stem cicatrix (scar), though this would be a real nickname because of its feminine gender. ;)
