With everyone painting gladiators and showing their arenas, I finally took the plunge and bought some gladiators that I've been eyeing for a while now. With gladiators in hand, I decided to build an arena. I went with just the arena and wall. Then I decided on hex base as I am going to use Furt's rules when they come out, until then I'll use Warhammer's Gladiator rules. I have two gladiators painted, just waiting for the bases to dry so I can finish them. Photos of them to follow soon, then the games can begin!

Those are Foundry gladiators in the second pic.
The doors were made out of balsa and coffee stirrers, and were really fun to make. More pictures of the arena on my site. theparadeground.blogspot.com (http://theparadeground.blogspot.com)

Splendid stuff, that's a sizeable arena. :)
-
That is awesome. Nice work!
-
Thank you, I wanted an arena that could be used for single combat or mass battles.
-
WOW!! A man of action Justin - that's the spirit! I've been "working" on a similar sized arena for literally years now and here you go and just whip one up. Well done. :o
Really nice design. I love the doors and widows etc.
-
@ Furt, funny you say that, I can't tell you the hours I spent looking at your blog studying your pictures. I pulled a lot of my inspiration from them.
-
Ave Justinus!
That's one massive arena! :o ;D
Looking very good, I'm sure epic matches will be fought in that arena.
-
:o
That is quite a place you have there!
Looking good so far.
Another Ludos to keep an eye on.

Needed some gladiators to celebrate the newest edition to the family, Campbell Elizabeth Buck.... let the games begin!

Congrats for the daughter!
Very fine gladiators to celebrate her, wishIcould paint my Foundry chaps so good 8)
-
Congrats alright!! But I guess that's the last you'll paint for a couple of years now!! ;)
They are really nice - loving how you did the flesh. :-*
-
May I present Africanus the Secutor and Ansgar the Retiarius. More pics at my site. Let me know what you think.

Beautiful Justin. Really loving your skin tones mate. :-*
I am just finishing the same secutor and I think I'll give him that same shield.
-
Missed this one before, great stuff :-*
cheers

-
Looks great, and like other I'll like to compliment you on the flesh tones. Foundry triads?
-
I can't afford both foundry paints and figures, only one or the other :) I use craft paint in the large bottles. They cost a fraction if the price and are for the most part just as good. I use the foundry paint chart and try to match the color. I guess you can call it a bootleg foundry triad lol

Nice work :) :-* :)
There is a lot to be said for craft paints but slowely and surely they seem to be going out of 'style' in the 'art/craft' stores.
Nice arena, I usually use round washers but was considering hex bases for my newly aquired Crusader gladiators.
-
Finally got some time to get some photos taken of the figures I finished in the past few weeks.

Here are some Ludus guards to keep the slaves from rebelling. I could use them in a scenario where they fight the gladiators at the Ludus or in the arena. They are Wargame Factory's Caesar's Legion. The detail isn't as nice as some but they are cheep and paint up quick :D The lights killed the shields as they don't show the highlights on them. I also have the rest of the box to cannibalize for other projects. The Doctore is a Wargame Factory Numidian with Legionary arms. I really like the plastic Numidian box, there are so many things they can be used for. I plan on making up a few slaves to fight in the arena.
C&C always welcome.

Awesome work - yeah those old WF Romans are soft as day-old butter. lol You did them very well.
-
Very true, but I wasn't too worried about it they are background characters compared to the gladiators :)
-
Very nice - talk about purses and sow's ears.
Those shields are brilliant.
I've often wondered could the box of Numidians be used as some kind of basis for gladiator conversions - maybe I will find that out. :)
-
The Numidians are just as soft, but would make super cheap slaves for execution, etc.
-
Finally got around to painting/ photographing these two, who knew that having a newborn would take up so much free time ;D
Hope you like them.

Looking amazing!
If that Secutor a bronze age miniature gladiator, could i get a scale shot with some of your other gladiatorsÉ
Thanks,
Andrew

The Secutor is a Paul Hicks/Brigade Games model. Love the two new additions. Nice to see another Laquearius too!

lol - an understatement for sure. Babies are real hobby KILLERS!!
The Brigade games figure has painted up a treat, as has the Laquearius. Must say though that the Laquearius is one of my least favorite armaturae.

After making some money on the games, Justinian Cervus decided to expand his ludus by buying some slaves. They were a mixed bunch, from house slaves who disobeyed their former masters for the last time, to legionaries who deserted from their unit on the boarder not to far from town and were caught, to prisoners of war. Some of them had to be reminded of their new roles. The ranks of the guards were expanded with the addition of two soldiers to deal with the influx of unreliable slaves. Got to keep the possibility of a revolt from happening. Three gladiators joined the ludus. Persicus, a heavy Sagittarius; Calamus, a light Sagittarius; and Marcellus, a heavy Velite. I know velites are not normally heavily armored, but this was the only figure I had with a wolf cloak....and I really wanted him to have a wolf cloak :) The metal figures are from Foundry and the rest are from Wargames Factory Caesar's legion and Numidian boxes. They do make great unarmored slaves. There are quite a few pics, hope no one minds :D Any c/c welcome. More on http://theparadeground.blogspot.com/ (http://theparadeground.blogspot.com/)

Nice additions, Justin.
I think you are achieving some good results with your brush, especially that wolf fur and the 'stripes' on their backs.
Ouch!

Nice bronze too.

Have to agree - those lash cuts look AMAZING!! :-*
Did you actually score the miniatures first?
Of them all, I really like the scantily clad slaves the most. Well done.
-
You certainly went shopping in style :o
Great additions. Are some of them conversions or are they all straight 'off the shelf'?

Something you're not telling us Frank ;D lol

Thanks for the comments. The chainmail bodies are legionaries and the bare arms are Numidian arms. There are so many arms in the boxes that the combinations are endless. The only other "conversion" are the rectangle shields that I cut down from the plastic oval shields that came with the legionaries. The slaves with the lash marks were scored with a knife before undercoat and then given a red wash after the skin was finished. The ex legionaries had some cut marks on their upper left shoulder, where their legion# tattoo was cut off. You can see this on the one with the pilum. I really like the way the lash marks came out :)
I think I might take a little break from painting gladiators until Furt's rules come out, cause I have no where to put them and they have taken over my painting table!

I certainly contemplated using a different term from "scantily clad slaves", now I know I should have. lol
"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"

Great brushwork, I agree the whip cuts looks great.

Those unarmoured slaves are fantastic, i love the lash marks! Ive gotta look into those Wargames Factory Numidian kits! People seem to be using them for everything :D
-
Tons of character - I like what you've done with all of your miniatures. You can play almost any scenario I'd imagine. Nicely done.
