I'm searching for some good fantasy skirmish rules.
I enjoyed Mordheim but I'm searching something different (preferably non-GW).
It should...
...allow 5 - 10 miniatures each player.
...not be tied to a certain background.
...not keep to fixed army lists.
...allow free character construction and equipment.
Please help me, I'm searching desperately.

If only you had asked a few months from now.
On the drawing board is Broadsword Adventures.

You could give GSF (Goal System Fantasy) a try. Same engine as 'Chaos in Cairo' and 'SuperSystem'. Availabe as PDF-download from
http://www.sabersedge.com/ or http://wargamedownloads.com/ for 3 US-$. Very basic though, but if you already own CiC and/or SuperSystem...

Allright, this thread's now running a few days, so here's my conclusion:
1. waiting for Broadsword Adventures
2. at the same time continue work on my Chronopia conversion
... and trying Gloire ;-)

Sorry to revive an old thread, but here's something I got and like: http://www.mj12games.com/ares/
Nice to try out, as it has a demo that's free to download. I tried it out with my Confrontation minis, and it works nicely.

I use my own version of Lord of the rings of GW. There is little work to make this rules work for other fantasy worlds.

How about Age of Blood, free on the Wargames Journal site. Re-worked LOTR for Vikings, but w/ everything a fantasy player would need included.

I'm dead sure in this conversions I have to pick the troops -like in every GW game- from a stupid army list.
And every figure's stats are almost the same, no chance for some fine-tuning.

I second goalsystem fantasy.

This is still in Beta Testing and I can see lots of stuff that needs editing.I do think the basic mechanics are in place now, and we've had a lot of fun trying them out. It was designed for use with our own line, and allows some character building in the advanced version. It would be easy enough to ignore a restriction or two and build characters from other lines using the same system.
Since our setting is in development, it is pretty much without a setting at the moment.

My game Strike Force Commander is exactly what you have listed above. However, the retail ruleset won't be out until sometime in October. Straight on its heels will be the sci-fi/fantasy expansion Epic Heroes.
I just posted some pics on my blog showing a 500 Supply Point campaign game between me and my friend Drew. He used his Wood Elf minis to make the Wind Song Harmony force, and I used my Dark Elf scouts to make the Skulltakers Sacrifice. You can see a few pics here at http://4sparta.blogspot.com/
