Title: New Dwarven Forge pieces
Post by: Operator5 on 26 October 2013, 05:57:14 PM
Finally unpacked everything from the new Dwarven Forge (http://dwavenforge.com) (http://dwavenforge.com) kickstarter. I ordered 5 starter sets and one add-on. There was a lot of stuff in those boxes. What you see below is about 5 and a half boxes worth of stuff out of the 10 I received (the cardboard frame I made is 2'x2'). Total cost for all of it was about $300, maybe a little more.

So, my review of it... I would give the new direction for Dwarven Forge an A-. Here are the couple of things that keep me from giving it a perfect score. 1) I received one of the tables from an accessory set so warped that it looked like an arch and not a table. The material does not seem to do well with very thin pieces. 2) A couple of the pieces came in with what appears to be mold material stuck to them or maybe bad curing. Out of 10 boxes I only had 3 pieces like this, so not a huge deal. 3) One of the main starter sets comes with the "demon door." I bought 5 starter sets and ended up with 5 of these doors. I would have preferred a more useful piece in the starter set since at most I would probably use one of these in a set up. But if anyone were to ask me, I would tell them to invest in the sets if they knew they would use them on a regular basis.

Now to get painting and making them "my own."

These are so nice. Mine are due next week. I ordered three stets and reading all the reviews it was/is worth the money (including the rather hefty shipping cost.)

Yep, I got my order (only got two sets...so I received about 3 total).  I have a large collection o  DF resin stuff which I like a lot.  I'll say this - at $95 for a painted single set, if the prices don't drop, this is a knock on Dwarven Forge (as their painted resin room sets which look nicer, have felt bottoms, etc. are only $109).  I do think it's probably smart business for them, but they really need to adjust the price or make it a killer deal.

As it is, they look set to sell a lesser product for about the same money.

None of that really matters as I feel the Kickstarter was a good deal.  I just hope the final release line of Game Tiles is more bang for your buck (should at least save a ton on shipping).

I just ordered the bits to have some more expansion pieces to add more rooms to my collection.  I was sad to hear that the new material suffers when produced on a larger scale - some people have had issues with floor tiles (the large ones) and the rumor is they can't produce large pieces like the original caverns stuff in the new material.  Hope this changes.

I'm relatively pleased with the stuff I received.  It'll take a bit to paint it to match my other stuff.  I may use a thin plastic and "create" some large floor tiles using the new plastic pieces.  I was a little miffed to see that the pre-painted stuff people ordered did not match the previous resin paint jobs at all.  That would have been a nice touch.  I was hoping they'd mix-n-match more seamlessly.  I ordered my sets unpainted, so I hope I'll be able to come up with a good match.

Overall, I'd say B+ on the product, but a possible C- on the product line unless it becomes very cost affective.  Perhaps unlike their previous stuff this can be sold by other retailers, possibly at a discount.
