Hi guys,
Tis the season for train spotting, and so I have begun the hunt for cheap train options this Christmas. So far all my searches in dollar stores for Goldloc/fastlane have turned up blank. But I found this in KMart today for $15. The engine could easily be converted for on30, but the carriages will need to be scratch built. It's "ho" ish scale and looks a little rough, but a basic start.

http://www.kmart.com.au/product/train-set/122318 (http://www.kmart.com.au/product/train-set/122318)
They also have a G scale union pacific for $50.
If you find something, post it up in here, especially if it's in Australia ;)
Cheers
Matt.

Does it look like the track would work with the Goldlock trains?

What does Goldloc trains run on? This appeared to be HO track. Also the rails, sleepers and ballast are all moulded as one. (Making things a little hard, to cut out every second sleeper to create a narrow gauge look).
Cheers

My camera is down. Could you post a picture of one of the tracks?

Hi bill, a few of my research pics are attached. I haven't bought one yet, pending what else is released over the next few weeks.

For $50 that's a bargain if you're looking for G scale

That's the best shot I have of the tracks sorry. I don't have a fastlane/Goldloc train to compare it with. Nor have I purchased one yet.

Myer had this Christmas G scale special.
-
The tracks seem to be mounted on a grading of some sort. If they are it would work with the Goldlock train.
-
I took a piece of Goldlock track to a train store and found it matched U.S. O-Gauge, so 1/48 scale.
Most US O-Gauge track has 3 rails, although I am told 2-rail is available.

Well I got excited in my lunch break, and now I have this. I thought it's a basis to kitbash from. The height is somewhat right, the tracks are good, but the width is way off for 28mm

Not sure how that track suits your desires bill. But there are only about 2 straights in the whole box. The rest are curves.
Cheers

Just throwing one in from the European side of the pond ;D
I picked up the following set at PoundStretcher for £14.99. It claims to be 1:87 (HO), but doesn't look ludicrously small next to 28mm figs.
edit: forgot to mention, it's by Telitoy.

The image in my head at the moment is a bit of a train yard in a ruined city, so it'll be background fittings rather than the focus of any games. There is a huge amount of track, including quite a few sets of points :D You can just about make out some of the layouts in the photo below

Wow, nice find zemjw, a bit of a bargain. Anyone else had any luck?

If that's G Gauge then I'm a ........... G is 1/22.5 scale using 45mm track as 1metre narrow gauge IIRC.
The track doesn't look too bad if you're using it to represent standard gauge 4' 81/2".

OK that first train's track definitely wouldn't work. Could I get a picture of that last train's track, especially the end of a track section? Thank you.
-
@mysteriousbill
track is pretty plain
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-euljBVW1po8/UnQKHY1LSmI/AAAAAAAACEs/bYO5p-hG0Ys/s800/TrainTrack1.jpg)
with 28mm Hasslfree figure
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-tUVGsjQER-Y/UnQKIAnV5aI/AAAAAAAACEw/uSaLaIvPQI8/s800/TrainTrack2.jpg)
distance from outside to outside of tracks is 28.2mm, and distance inside to inside is 24.5mm (not sure which one is used as gauge ???)
-
The inside gauge is the measurement. American railroads have an inside measurement of 56 1/2", so 24.5 is pretty darn close, though the size of the rails themselves is over size for the scale.

Sorry Tim, a misunderstanding. I mentioned 'G scale' referring to the "Black Canyon Express" I saw instore. The cheap little "Train" I bought is thoroughly HO.
So thankfully you don't have to be a .... or 'eat your hat' ;)
Thanks former user for the gauge comparisons. I'm hoping to model 3" 6' narrow gauge, as there was a branch line out from South Australia to Silverton and Broken Hill in NSW. This would fit well with my colonial "old west" and rural Mad Max settings.
Cheers

Iv'e done an evilbay search for express trains, hoping to find a Goldloc express (well done Zem finding the poundstretcher).
The cheapest price was from the US for $35 AUD and $50AUD for shipping, going up to $80 for a battery operated toy train o_o.
I wish I had my eyes opened a few years ago when they were available in discount stores locally.
So I think my plan will be to scratchbuild a 3"6' narrow gauge Baldwin 2-8-0 from the loco body, and create rolling stock from the plastic wheel sets.
Are there any good tips or good sets of kitbashing materials for steam engines? Im probably going to need some gauges/valves.
Cheers
Matt.

I found your train Zen over on the edge of the empire too. It's a good sturdy looking unit with interesting interiour detail on the rollingstock.

Where was this?
-
A small discount shop in caringbah, Sydney. Maybe a bit of a trip for you Mr von lucky...?
Cheers
Matt
-
Thanks, yes it would. However these bargain stores usually get their stuff cheap because someone else has imported it cheap (ie bulk) into the country, so I hoping some of it has made it here too :)
-
It seems the same (or nearly the same) are for sale in many different countries and places under different names
This one:
http://www.eminza.com/noel/train-electrique-noel-baral.html
...is also for sale in a shop 6 kms from my home for 14.99 €.
Website says the loco, tender and wagon are 6 cm wide, this a a bit big, but...?
-
It is Chinese:
http://cn.fftoys.cn/eng/STZC.asp?id=222
EDIT:
Aaaargh I could not resist, I bought it.
In fact the locomotive is about 4.6 cm wide, and the tender 4.2 cm wide, in my opinion they go very well with 28 mm miniatures.
The passengers wagon is too small. The rails are probably correct gauge but bulky.
I am happy with the loco and tender - but I'm not a railway specialist. It seems they could do from WW1 onwards, perhaps with minor modifications? (first, remove the back of the cabin, etc).
-
Good buy. The problem with the small set is that you only get one item of rolling stock, and no straight track. The bigger set seems better if you can find it.
I found the wheels and track bulky but possible, and I think a little chopping and inserting plasticard should make it spot on, (Michi's narrow gauge cars are 50mm wide). I do like that the inside of the passenger car has seats.

Fast lane/Goldloc British "Passenger Express"
Just found a single copy of this loco interstate. I'm not sure if it's the end of a line or the new edition, but it is the same as the highly coveted goldloc western loco. If anyone is modeling WW2 or steam punk keep a look out for this one!

Very nice find. Keeping my eyes peeled for any during the post-Christmas sales.
-
Interesting. Looks quite similar to the Fenfa train with some differences (it could be the same origin, however).
On the pics on the ToysRus website it seems that the passengers cars are same scale as the engine, that would be good (the passengers cars of the Fenfa train are far too small).
Could you please show it close to 28mm miniatures; and measure the rails gauge?
-
Anyone seen any good Canadian deals in this vein?
I'm preferably looking for European-style trains & cars. Not something I was planning on picking up yet, but I figure if there's a good deal out there, now's the season.
-

No can do Patrice, I didn't buy it. But any canberran can if they want one from the airport toys r us.
If I didn't already have 2 train sets based on different track already I would have bought it. I don't have the space to hoard trains too! ;)

That was my hope Fram, to add current research to the thread and see what was out there to make an informed choice.
Anyone else found a bargain?
-

by the size of the kids hands it should be 0 gauge
-
It looks like it is the same as this one (with a slightly different engine, they are both advertised on ToysRUs website).
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=46818.0
Probably compatible with the Fenfa train which has 24 mm gauge...
Anyone else found a bargain?
Yes I bought another train discounted in a shop (probably a leftover from previous year) for 6.95 €; engine (but no tender) quite similar to Fenfa, and three wagons :), the rails are same gauge as Fenfa but uglier.
-
I've finished my Locos, No4 and No12. And i'm pretty chuffed for the $15 a piece they cost me. Now to build some cars and base the rails.

Thanks Michi. I aspired to your standard, and fell short, but am pretty happy with the outcome.
Cheers former user and Patrice! thanks for the help along the way.

Blogpost from Shed Wars (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/28mm-train-for-wargames-part-2.html) showing some good pictures of the Poundstretcher train.
It looks like it's still available from TJ Hughes (http://www.tjhughes.co.uk/toys-games/toys-by-type/electronic-toys/railcar-train-set), although it's £19.99 there
