Yes, I'm getting this in early in an attempt to keep it upto date as much as possible.
Following on from last years battle (piccies shown below) the fight has moved more into the town and is now outside the main walls.
Fortunately, all the town is done so all I have to do is make a castle gate and he start of a tenshu with a few ancillary buildings thrown in. The exact layout is yet to be decided but with over 30 Japanese castle books I'll not be wanting for inspiration :)
The other main change is that it will be more of a demo game using a mod for Sharp Practice and utilising singles figures in units of around eight to 12-14. This will also be recorded here as I still want to keep a lot of my collection on multi bases but I will also be painting new figures etc... So watch this space :)

JimBibblyson,
I bow to your mastery of all things Japanese... :`
Will be watching this thread verrry carefully for further updates.
-
I think I will be going to Salute next year.
-
Superb. I booked the wrong weekend's hotel for Salute like a duffer. Trying to get it amended but the weekend of Salute is the London Marathon and all hotels are more expensive >:(
-
Banzai Bibbly Sama! Brilliant 8)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Although that was last years set up I'm hoping next years will be better :)
Rebased some of my samurai a while ago so I'll post them here as they will be used on the day.
A Miyoshi unit

Yeah, awesome saucy :D
-
Thanks chaps :)
No buildings for a while but I'm rebasing a lot of figures and intend to start quite a few 'fresh' ones over the next few weeks as and when I'm able.
cheers
James
-
Please keep updating the pictures here when you do so. Would love to see more. If I can get to Salute this year I will be seeking out your display. Is display the right word?
-
It's probably going to be a participation game that you can jump in and out of whenever so more than the previous years 'displays'.
cheers
James
-
I havent been to salute before so wasn't sure. Sounds good though. Will endeavor to attend.
Hopefully I will have my own Samurai painted by then.
-
They look damned good James.
-
Given the quality of the board in the first pic i think that 'shrine' may be a better description than 'display', it looks great.
I missed Salute this year due to illness, I hope that I will be fit next April as I gave been kicking myself black and blue while listening to mates describe what they saw/bought.
-
What are these based on btw? and what did you use for the grass if you don't mind sharing.
-
Belated thanks chaps :)
What are these based on btw? and what did you use for the grass if you don't mind sharing.
Based on pennies and the trays are my own that will make it into the catalogue next year. The grass is normal railway static grass applied with slightly watered down wood glue and then coated with spray matt arnish with the rest of the figure :)
This has reminded me to post the first finished ship that will appear on the board (should be about three) and yes, it's been stitched by hand :)
It's a seki-bune (pronounced sekky boo-nay) and was the mainstay of many of the larger clan fleets. The nobori are made by hand.
The mon is the Murakami clan which were a sea fairing clan plying the waters of Japan's inland sea (around the area of Hiroshima).

Absolutely beautiful - you are an artist James. :-* :-* :-*
I second that, you are a bloody genius! 8)
-
Very nice ship :-* :-* :-*
I don't get the shape though. What's the purpose of the big heavy looking body. Pictures I have seen of similar Chinese ships had arrow slots in the lower area and/or rowers?
-
Thanks mate. I never considered basing on pennies. I was going to base on 20mm washers but this way I not only get far more bases for my money but I don't have to worry about filling the gap.
Your ships look fantastic James. I really want to see the board in person.
I really need to get cracking on my Uesugi Kenshin force.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Colin, they were basically fighting platforms and transports. Japanese naval warfare of the period was totally different from our own part of the world.
I haven't added the oars as I haven't got machine access and I'd need it to do them all properly.
Basically the ships would either keep at a distance shooting normal and fire arrows at each other until one side gave or they would plow together and duke it out hand to hand.
It was only when the foreign countries landed that the Japanese started to utilise our ship building techniques for their own use and even then they didn't really perfect it.
I suppose sailing has never been their strong point ???
Come to Salute Carl and see it in person :)
cheers
James
-
I very much plan to James. :)
-
Lovely, mate, just lovely.
:-* :-*
and yes, it's been stitched by hand :)
Not only an artist, but a seamstress too.
Would you like a thimble for Christmas, mate?
:D
-
Looking good Jim, just shout if you need a hand for the day.
-
Consider it shouted Kev ;)
Haven't heard back from them yet and it won't be till next year now... Not long to go :o
Would you like a thimble for Christmas, mate?
Got one already thanks... ::)
cheers
James
-
Beautiful.
What is your technique for the wood? What type, do you wire brush it for texture, etc.?
Awesome work!
-
Stunning ship! The Japanese naval warfare of the period is insanely bizarre. Like having floating battlefields/castles!
Did Japanese pirates get any better at sea-based activities, given they were making a living doing it? lol
-
They were good at raiding the Chinese coastline and smaller islands but used small, more seaworthy ships.

Just gridded net sandpaper that's been folded and then pulled across the wood :)
cheers

Outstanding! The boat's the bollox Bibbly Sama, hai! 8)

:o :o
Just great work. I consider samurai to be the hardest thing to paint (for me anyway). I love them, but avoid at all costs.
-
Love it as ever James! :-* Your samurai stuff is truly inspiring, and I always blatently cop... get inspired by your builds when I try to build stuff for my Bushido board :)
-
Was that from me?
cheers
James
No, second hand from a guy on TMP, he stiffed me on one building too. I should have went direct from you (and I will next time I get some buildings, I need more walls in any case) but I think you might have been temporarily closed.
-
Thanks again chaps :)
More rebased figures over the weekend.

Looking forward to it.
-
You can have it back if you want it. It has been utter shit for my attempts to gain cover the last couple of games...
-
Your work is really excellent, attention to detail is fantastic, I have always admired Japanese building methods
-
Any more progress on this recently Jim?
-
Any more progress on this recently Jim?
'Fraid not but there will be in a week or two :)
Figures mainly to start with and then hopefully the gateway to the main castle walls (it's been started but needs a fair amount of work doing to it).
cheers
James

Well, that's over for another year. Many thanks to all those who came over to say hello :)
A big thanks to Brian Phillips for sending down some commissions I had made for him as I didn't have time to complete more building bases.
Thanks also to the chaps helping out, you know who you are ;)
Pictures below and the first one is of the Best Trader Game award I got :)

Fantastic as usual.
If you plan on releasing anything related to the Bower Rebellion, I know at least two persons who might be interested.
-

So three boards instead of two... means you need to get more people (chained) to run the games then?
-
Looking splendid with some lovely new pieces - many congrats :D

How the hell didn't i see this on the day!!?

I just might… especially if one gets to wear a fez :D
Actually I have quite a number of running demo games under my belt both in store and in cons...

Looks like the perfect board set-up for the last battle from the Ninja Scroll OAV.

What was that step?
-
What was that step?
A few of my mates bought into Bushido a Samurai/ Japanese Fantasy type miniature skirmish game.
I picked the Prefecture of Ryu faction as they had plenty of Samurai and Ashigaru models. I finished assembling them late last night and hope to paint them over the next week or so.
I also dug up Issue 67 of Wargames Soldiers & Strategy magazine which focuses on Warfare in Feudal Japan. It was a fantastic read and also gives pointers on figures in different scales.
I have also surfed the web for terrain, figures and ideas. I went to a craft store and picked up some beads and other things I can use to make Lanterns etc on a themed gaming table.
I guess the next thing to do is to watch a few movies like the 7 Samurai.
-
Sounds good mate. Share what you paint once you have painted some.
7 Samurai, Ran and Kagemusha have to be on your list
