Is there no BrushOff this year???.
-
I'll post the details tomorrow. Had to take a few days off...
And the details are below! Apologies for the late start.
-
Alright gents (and ladies, I hope - this has been a rather one-sided event to date!), another BrushOff! is indeed upon us. Just to keep everyone on their toes, we've opted to shake up the categories once again this year:
- Any single Uncle Mike's Worldwide miniature pack. This includes all our 1-3 model bags as well as the boxed sets (Dark Puppeteer, Crypt, Godling).
- In celebration of the release of VUK, show us your cult! This entry may feature any number of models, but it must be a functioning cult list. Other manufacturer's models are acceptable, but may constitute no more than 1/3rd of the total figures.
Photos of your entry (1024x768 maximum please) can either be posted to this thread, submitted to contests@strange-aeons.ca, or submitted to me via PM. Accepted entries will be posted to the contest Gallery (http://strange-aeons.ca/photo/BrushOff-2013/), where you'll be able to view all the competition, along with past year's entries if you need some inspiration. You may enter as many times as you like, and may double-enter the models from your cult as single packs if you so choose. However, be aware that we won't award a prize to the same model twice...
For prizes, we'll be awarding UMW webstore gift certificates to two entries per category: $30 for first place, $15 for second. All winners will also receive a pack of currently unreleased models when they claim their bounty, which I'll be previewing within the next two weeks, provided I (or anyone else around the lab) get off my butt and paint them. We're off to a slightly late start, and it seems nasty to end a contest right in the middle of a perfectly good painting weekend, so we'll set the close at 11:59PM MDT on December 1st.
Oh, should mention, the subject of promotional figures has come up in the past. As they're not considered a full pack, they're ineligible for competition on their own, but you can certainly fit them into a cult freely. Also feel free to tuck them into your single pack entries for added flavour - those cultists sure do look a lot more menacing when standing over a captive agent, after all! Also, the full-body Deep One (ie. not the submerged version) will be accepted as a single pack entry.
-
Nice! I'll see if I can paint something up before December 1st, I think even I can make that deadline...I'm quite slow.
-
Can we use models we entered in a prior Brushoff for the Cult entry?
-
Sounds fine to me. Looking forward to seeing a few cults!
-
Here is my first entry.
The 2 Cults i was using with the VUK beta rules
Greetings from Germany

-
And my first single miniatures entry
-
Always good to see a Godling painted up... :-* 8)
-
Great start!!!
-
Wow, some really nice work there harleyface, the Godling is looking especially sweet. I've begun work on my first batch of cultists and agents but it's the first painting I've attempted since I developed the Carpotunnel in my arms and hands and nerve damage in my neck, so I'm actually having to come up with a whole new technique for painting. It's quite challenging (and more than a little frustrating at times) but I really hope to have them finished before the deadline.
-
Real life is getting a bit in the way, so I'm not sure if I can make the deadline...still have to fill the gaps in the model, prime it and start painting it.

You still have some time, I admit it is rough for me to keep up a few things. Just allocate some time before bed or when you get up a bit earlier to paint for a few.

I know and I'm really going to try and finally get something painted for BrushOff. I've been away from painting Strange Aeons stuff because I was busy with my Warhammer 40K army...am a bit bored of painting that at the moment, so I've decided to do some Strange Aeons stuff again starting with something for this competition.
harleyface: Great job on the Godling and the two cults by the way.
-
Thank you !
The Godling was already finished but i was too slow for brush off 2012 :-)
Right now i m painting the latest SA mini sets.
Think they will be finished soon :-)
Greetings

-
So here is my entry for this years BrushOff.
For the category: Any single Uncle Mike's Worldwide miniature pack.
Cheers,
Za
Ps.
LidlessEye is this post enough or do I need to e-mail you the picture?
-
That's all I need!
Something has glitched out with our gallery, which I'll endeavour to get fixed tomorrow. Once it's back up, I'll add the current entries in.
-
Some great stuff here, fellas.
Harleyface: That Cult shot is great and that Godling is the dogs danglies!
:-*
Za: Nice cold-blooded killers.
Like the scenery too.
Very nice!
8)
-
Thank you Mason.
Think im more gamer than fotograph :-)
But its a painting contest so im fine with the pictures :-)
Concerning the cult
I liked the idea of having a insmouth cult.
Thats why i used the heroclix minis(completly repainted)
For the snakeman cult.
I always liked the idea that the cultists could be humans or snakes under the hood.
So i painted a set of snakeman in red the colour of my cultists :-)
Think it works well ( my first set was blue)

-
Heres another picture of the cults.
dont know which one is better ;)
-
And heres the next finished set :)
-
I think your original cult shot was a little bit better, insofar as a greater number of figures look to be in clear focus.
The top-secret bonus pack is about 1/3 of the way to painted on my desk here. I'll either try to get those finished or see if I get a shot of Mike's this week to give everyone a sneak peek...
-
I see your top-secret bonus pack and raise you another top-secret bonus pack...for sure won't have this one painted in time...possibly a shot of the greens. It is loverly :-*. So, to re-cap for those in the back who are bad at simple maths: two top-secret bonus packs!!! What could they be??? News on this by the end of the week...assuming Canadian winter goes easy on us for a few more days and I can actually go and physically see Lidless sometime this week...
-
And heres the next finished set :)
I need that fat zombie! I have the other figs!
-
Alrighty, here goes the unveiling of the as-yet-unreleased bonus packs! First up, Hybrids, which won't be released until sometime next year:
And a shot of the greens, because we don't have him cast just yet: Krampus, and terrified children! This pack will be available for sale in early December (and we'll have some free scenarios to go with him), but you can snag yours for free by winning the contest.
Now if those won't get you guys to pick up your brushes, I don't know what will. We have three entries so far. Three! I know last year was a slow starter, but this is flat out glacial. Paint, paint, paint!!!
-
:o
Stunning new figures.
Love them all, but those kids are just too much for ones sanity*.
:-* :-* :-*
*The big-headed freaks.
-
Hybrids are sweet! The kids are a riot! I am painting slowly, having some issues getting some things done with the new job, thanksgiving holidays and such....
Should have two entries next week, maybe I can kick out more....
-
Most excellent! Krampus looks terrifying and the kids look great. Just in time for the holidays...
-
Hybrids look sweet, will definitely be adding them to my collection. Krampus looks nicely sculpted but doesn't thrill me as much as the Mythos stuff but I could see picking him up somewhere down the line.
Still working on my first agents and cultists but as I'd noted before haven't painted since developing the carpotunnel in my hands and arms and the nerve damage in my neck so I'm pretty much having to reinvent the way I paint. It's coming along but not as nicely as I'd hoped. Just gonna have to hang in there and hope for the best. I will finish them, in time for the contest or not.
-
Alas, not going to be able to paint anything...real life is getting in the way. Better luck next year, I'll paint it up by then.
-
One more entry ;)
Hope you like it
-
Only four days to go, and we're sitting at a mere seven entries from three entrants. Here's hoping you guys are just taking extra time to prep some awesome models...
-
I'm still working on my entries as best as I can but, as I'd said, having to re-learn how to paint again (due to medical problems I didn't have until recently) things aren't going as swimmingly as I'd hoped. Maybe I should concentrate on one or two packs instead of the 6 or so I have going all at once. Well, i know what I'll be doing on my day off tomorrow.
-
I've been feverishly working on my entries lidless,
I'm going to try stuffing the ballot box with 7 entries,
6 single packs and my Dagon worshipping cult.
Hoping to have them finished tomorrow and photographed
Friday or Saturday
Regards
Jim
-
Glad to hear it gents! Don't take my previous comment as a browbeating - I'm just a bit sad curating my sparse little gallery, relative to the torrent of entries we had in past years.
Diehard, much respect from my quarter. I've had enough of a struggle voluntarily changing up my painting style through the years (to varying effect), and can't imagine having to forcibly relearn the whole schtick - I doubt I could fight my way through the frustration. That's some serious dedication there.
-
Nice work on those Agents, Harleyface.
:-*
That is one of my favourite packs from UMW.
Some really cool poses in there.
8)
Looking forward to Fairoaks entries as I do like his painting style.
I wont be adding any myself as I have no time to do so, but have enjoyed seeing all the entries so far.
Some class efforts in there.
:D
-
Thanks Lidless, appreciate the sentiment. Carpotunnel and nerve damage is not a fun combo. My right thumb is swollen and partly numb (and I'm right handed) so I have to relearn just how to hold my brush. Pain in my biceps means I can't hold my arms up very long (I'm 53 but it's not entirely an age thing, my Jeep was t-boned by an idiot a little while back.) But in a roundabout way I have you, Mike and everyone involved with SA (including all you great forum members) to thank for inspiring me to get back into the hobby. Cthulhu Wars brought my attention back to miniature and led me to Strange Aeons. And SA has rekindled the painter/gamer in me, so I thank you all. And as frustrating as it is at times, I'm still really enjoying myself. I'll be doing my best to participate in the Brush Off regardless of the results and look forward to once again expand my collection and play some great games.
-
I have two entries to the single area, at least one cult entry, perhaps two if I can pull it off.
-
Alright lads, there's no way I was going to sit this one out... 8)
Here's my take on the new Hybrids. I know, I know they are not officially a pack until their release in 2014, but how could I resist?!
These will make a nice addition to my Dagonite Kult in VUK, as soon as I get some Resource Points ::)...
-
Very nice work indeed DJ,
Can't wait for those to be released, I'm also running a dagonite
Cult. They'll be very useful
Regards
Jim

Eeek, I have some gallery updating to do!
-
Great job guys! :o :-*
Styx, I'm a big fan of the Winged Nightmare, very nice work. I agree that some Captain makes delving into the unknown much more enjoyable ;)
Jim, I love your take on the Deep One and it always nice to see another Dagonite Kult.
Way to step up guys!
-
Ah, the gallery is looking much better now. We're still a few entries short of what we saw the past few years, but it's close!
Mike and I aren't going to be able to get together to judge the entries until Tuesday (weather permitting!), so we may as well stretch the deadline out an extra day to give anyone feverishly working on a last-minute entry a touch of extra time to finish up.
-
Not quite up to the same standard as a few of the previous wonderful entries but here is my single pack entry:
-
I need that Krampus set! Actually, I need two. :D
-
And just for fun (even though I obviously can't win anything!), I'll toss in my own Hybrids:
And stick them into a Dagonite cult too:
-
Nice work lidless,
Really like the hybrids and your cult.

Jim

Another BrushOff comes to a close - our thanks to everyone that entered! We actually ended up beating the entry count from the past two years. Well, just barely, and in large part because I stuffed a few extra in the box on the last day, but still, new record! Alrighty, on to the important bit.... Winners! You'll be receiving shop certificates shortly, and there are Krampus and Hybrid packs waiting with your names on them.
Single Pack
1st Place - Rob Mitchell, Cultists III
Evil eye hoods, tartans, and a Black Goat banner!! What's not to like?
2nd Place - Florian Stockbauer, Godling
A fine and detailed treatment of a challenging model!
Cult
1st Place - Jim Cockburn, Dagonites
Just a beautiful squad in general, but oh, that Deep One! Love the spots.
2nd Place - Rob Mitchell, Death Cult
I must tip my fez to anyone that can actually pull off so horrifying a shade of green successfully.

-
Congrats to the winners.
-
Thanks to all those who participated this year! Some great stuff there!
-
Some great stuff there!
There certainly is!
8)
Well done to all, and congrats to the winners.
:D
-
Great work indeed. A lot of very vibrant colorful entries.
-
What a great thread; every entry was great. I love the style of painting on the Deep One cult. We'll done to all entrants.
-
Thank you!!!
Florian
-
Thanks very much guys, and especially mike and lidless
for running the competition.
Congrats to the other winners too, nice work on all the entries.
Really pleased to have finally taken a first place especially
after not being able to take part last year.
Now to start on my death cult for VUK
Regards
Jim
-
Congratulations to the winners :)
-
Brilliant and really inspiring stuff everyone, all deserving of recognition, Jim your Dagonites are stunning and that Deep One makes me want to shell out the $90 and have a go at him myself.
-
Congrats to all the winners and I must concur, some really fine entries. And although I didn't get to finish in time I'm really glad that the contest has both encouraged me to work on my painting skills anew and has shown me that I can't do those marathon sessions anymore and from now on I have to work for a short amount of time spread throughout the week. The results fall short of my previous efforts to be sure, but I'm starting to appreciate the new style I've been forced to adopt. So thanks SA, Uncle Mike, Lidless and everyone else on this wonderful board for giving me back my favorite hobby (next to collecting moldy tomes that is.) Fhtagn!
-
Thanks everyone for the congratulations.
I wanted to extend mine as well to the other winners.
Some great entries this year, I particularly like the paintjob on Florian's Assorted Undead.
Thanks also to Uncle Mike and Scott for hosting this competition.
-
Congrats to the winners.
Cheers,
Za
