These look fairly nice. I assume you plan to include the resource table back-ups in the deck? As for the design, a few thoughts...

Since people will use different figures, I think the picture is less important. While not necessary, you could consider making it smaller to save room. Perhaps you could shrink the picture, then move health under the figure, freeing up room for the abilities.

The "fold" in the bottom left corner of the cards looks like it can get in the way of the ability text. I think that can be removed.

For the ability text, I think it will look nicer if it's left-aligned instead of centered. You might want to bold the ability name to make it easier to identify. That would also allow you to slightly reduce the spacing between abilities. If you then move the PA copyright to the back of the card, you could potentially free up another line of space for the abilities.

I'd prefer if the back of the card were vertical-oriented, so that it aligns with the front. It's not that important though; just my personal preference when it comes to cards.

Very nice  :-*

If the intention to provide off-the-peg leagues or the blanks for creating one's own (or both)?   I can imagine using these.  I'd toyed with the idea of drafting something, but never got around too it.  Life would be much easier if I could just fill in the blanks and add a photo...

If your providing blank files as a resource pack, there could be a variety of 'skins' to cover different settings (ie, Police Files for gangsters, id cards, something a little SF, etc).

Even if people want to create their own leagues, you could also consider selling a pack of Opponents - dinos, King Kong, Giant Scorpians, sabre-toothed tigers and other various Terrors.

Keep up the good work!

I like them --  much nicer than my clunky ones! That said, I can't disagree with Rhydderch's suggestions. I don't have a problem with the larger area for the photo or drawing. If you take the game to conventions, it will help players identify which are which. In games with your own league, the photo becomes more of a convenience to quickly locate the right card by sight.

What about adding a different color back that is identical to the front, otherwise? That way you can flip the card to show whether it has acted or not already....

We talked about the idea of making the back a b/w version of the front, but decided against it. Turning the card sideways is just as easy. By making a common back for the cards it is very easy to draw a random character without having to roll any dice.

I'm going to print 54 of these plastic cards here:

Going to take a while to do the photoshop work on 54 cards though...

Since the character art is on the cards, you're just going to have to produce miniatures to sell along with the cards.

I made mine with space to tick off "hits" to the character's health, so you can keep track of what die to use. I put them in card sleeves to dry erase.

Thanks, syrinx0! There will most likely be lots more changes before we get a final design, so we appreciate the feedback. I'd have to guess that a Character deck is still a couple months away.

Great minds think alike Dave ;). Really like your designs. Nice stuff!

Yours looks awesome, Marijn. We're still debating the double-sided cards, but I think we'll end up doing a common card-back for the Base Character Deck so it is fast and easy to shuffle them up and draw random cards.

Another cool design, Jaye! The Health Track is certainly something we're considering as well.

If only we knew an awesome miniature sculptor who wanted to make some Pulp Alley figures? Hmm... Perhaps someone hiding-out in the wilds of western Scotland... ??   ;)

That's art for a soon-to-be released miniature from Statuesque's new Pulp/Horror range.

I was inspired by both Dave's and BaronVonJ's efforts. So, I reworked mine. I am also going to put them in card clear sleeves...and will probably print them out on cardstock to give them some stiffness. I designed them so you can print it out and then simply fold it in half -- green side showing the character can still act on one side and red on the other.

I found a cool effect in Mac's Pages which lets the photo look like it is fading into the background. Speaking of which, the background is an old map tinted green and then red. Hope you like 'em...!

Just want to point out that some of the abilities in the rulebook (or offered elsewhere) have a fair bit more text. You may want to allow yourself some "wiggle-room" in the textboxes.

Mila's pointed you to the comparison pics so I hope that helps. The sci-fi figures are generally a little slimmer than say Hasslefree or Copplestone, being more at the Infinity end of the scale.

To keep everyone on their toes, I like to work to different styles for different genre. For example, while the sci-fi figures are slender and tall, my forth-coming fantasy figures will be full on heroic-scale, caricatured ridiculousness. And if I were to do a pulp range, perhaps in collaboration with a certain Pulp themed game, I would most likely sculpt in a chunky, "Copplestone-esque" style... ;)

Aren't your minis a bit on the taller side though? My impression was that they were closer to 32mm than 28mm height-wise?

The scifi figures are around 32mm tall. You find me a figure range of figures that are actually 28mm tall and I'll buy you a pint. Few figures are even 28mm to the eyes. ;)

They may be a bit taller than some ranges but they're also smaller than other ranges. Most of the figures are meant to be tall people anyway- the Resistance Girls are supposed to be some ridiculous band of warrior models in true B-movie style. But to say they're 32mm figures vs 28mm figures is wrong because 28mm tall figures don't exist. :D

Anyway, the pulp range will be a tad smaller (depending on the character) but definitely bulkier.

Aww. I actually don't mind the proportions of your current gang. I like Bob Murch and Mark Copplestone's figs and will be happy to use some of them, but I don't need them ALL to be chunky beefcake. A few slender folks would be nice to mix things up.

I guess we'll see! ;)
Title: Re: Pulp Alley Character Cards
Post by: Andrew Rae on November 18, 2013, 09:17:16 PM
They still look like my figures, just with slight changes in proportions which means they'll match better with Copplestone figures. Pulp Girl is rather slender and petite, while Phantom Ace is a big, chunky bruiser!* Just depends on the character. :)

*Hint: The character art for Pulp Girl, Phantom Ace and Lillie are 2D renders of the 3D sculpts, not just 2D line art. Those are the figures. ;)

Funny enough, I thought the Pulp Girl and Phantom Ace pictures were just meant to be renders of existing figures already available elsewhere.

We'll have previews for the miniatures very soon.

I'm really liking how they're both turning out. The Pulp Girl miniature is going to be a blast to scoot along the table (as she blasts everything in sight lol) I can't wait till we get solid miniatures :D

Cool, I'm thinking it will fit lots of character types. I've been wanting to do an ability like this forever but never could get it to work quite right. The current version is slightly different but is still basically the same --

Harmless -- This character has no-dice in Brawl and Shoot. They may not be rushed by an enemy over 6" away. In addition, this character never counts as the closest target or in line-of-sight unless the enemy is within 6”.

It's still on the playtest list so I actually expect it to change a couple more times, but that's what playtesting is for!   ;)

If you try it, please let me know how it worked.

THANKS

Exactly! I think there are enough examples out there to support the idea of even doing a leader level character as Harmless. Maybe even an entire league? Might work but I like shooting too much.  lol

Well, a quick look at double-size gives us the following:

Sister Anaesthesia - An woman, possibly older, in a conservative dress. Not sure why it looks double-layered? Notably she does not appear to be wearing a nun's habit or nurse's outfit (though it's hard to say for sure), but perhaps she's a wardess or administrator at Pulp Asylum?

Doctor Strukov - Classic doctor type. Will be very useful and versatile!

DA Danton - Trenchcoat, tommygun, and fedora. Will probably fit very well with the Copplestone Gangsters

Red Queen - There's our lounge singer!

I'm guessing the first two will be a Pulp Asylum pack and the second two will be a Vice Alley pack.

How about doing a deck of generic character cards ala "Shoot and Skedaddle" ? Sidekicks, Allies and Followers of various sorts and maybe a couple more leaders.  Fill in all the information except for the character's name.

Yah!  I think I mentioned earlier that it would be great to have some blanks printed in plastic.  That way they could be written on and cleaned off or apply tape, write on it then peel away tape when done.

I might try Gary's idea of printing these on plastic and see how it works.  :D

Count my lazy self in that group that wants to be semi-spoon fed.

Yeah, absolutely, multiples would be required...

Is that an Olde Canadienne Custom?

Consider it a badge of honor if you manage to wear one out!

I've 'distressed' mine with sandpaper, flexigrit 440, moistened lightly with a damp cloth, the ironed dry inside a pillowcase.

It makes it look like I have actually played the damn game...

Besides it helps hide my cunning back marks in the corners that my SuperSpecs alone can see.

Litko or one of the other laser-engraving/laser-cutting outfits should be able to sort this sort of thing out.

Litko does a whole pile of both official/branded and "works with" templates and bits and pieces, in fact.

Here's another idea for a full card set:

Card #1: Plot Point card (blank card where you can fill in all of the plot point types from the table)
Card #2: Resource - Tip-off
Card #3: Resource - Solid Leads
Card #4: Resource - Quick Transport
Card #5: Backup - Lvl 1: Brawler
Card #6: Backup - Lvl 1: Shooter
Card #7: Backup - Lvl 1: Scout
Card #8: Backup - Lvl 2: Brawler
Card #9: Backup - Lvl 2: Shooter
Card #10: Backup - Lvl 2: Scout
Card #11: Backup - Lvl 3: Brawler
Card #12: Backup - Lvl 3: Shooter
Card #13: Backup - Lvl 3: Scout
Card #14: Backup - Lvl 3: Custom
Card #15: Contacts - Friendly Local
Card #16: Contacts - Rumors and Gossip
Card #17: Contacts - Snitch
Card #18: Contacts - A Few Maneuvers
Card #19: Contacts - Unexpected Ally
Card #20: Contacts - Savoir-Faire
Card #21: Contacts - Trusted Informant
Card #22: Contacts - Quick Transport
Card #23: Contacts - One Step Ahead
Card #24: Contacts - Double-Cross!
Card #25: Gear - Utility Belt
Card #26: Gear - Gadget X
Card #27: Gear - Smoke Grenades
Card #28: Gear - Chemical X
Card #29: Gear - Bulletproof Vest
Card #30: Gear - Prototype Deflector
Card #31: Gear - Gas Microgrenades
Card #32: Gear - Experimental Jetpack
Cards #33-#36: Blank Leader cards (4)
Cards #37-#40: Blank Sidekick cards (4)
Cards #41-#48: Blank Ally cards (8 )
Cards #49-#54: Blank Follower cards (6)

Gives you all the cards for a standard deck of 54 cards.
I am very interested in having cards for the Backup/Contacts/Backup/Gear. Now I often forget about them because they are in the back of the book. Having them as cards makes them easier to work with in between games.

I still wanna buy Pulp Alley Burst templates!!

See thru plastic or acrylic, with the wicked logo...

You can use 3" Warmachine or the 3" GW templates
For custom acrylic printing, I assume that the templates should be provided as vector files? Since I made the templates, I can provide files if necessary...

I only plut the Fortune Deck cards into sleeves so you, Gary42, wouldn't be able to tell the new play-test cards were in the mix.

When the playtest cards aren't in the mix, we have unprotected decks.  ;D

Malebolgia, I've been wanting to make a Resources Deck for awhile. I still forget to use some of my Gear and Contacts bonuses in the heat of the action, so I think it would be really helpful.  ;)

Anyone else interested?  :D
